Every morning at 5 a.m. when most people are asleep, a figure would be busy in the kitchen, cooking meals until the rest of the volunteers arrive. Day in and day out, Mr. Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island.
His journey started when one of his neighbors, Lisa, asked him to collect vegetables and give them away at Bukit Ho Swee, a poor neighborhood, and thus, he continued to do so for a period of time. During one of these visits, his wife noticed that the old folk did not take the vegetables. Asked why, one replied that she could not cook, so she only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs. Tay then offered to cook for her, and it was that single meal that spurred Willing Hearts, which has served about 650,000 meals ever since.
The soup kitchen has many volunteers, some of whom are new, while others have been around since the organization's early days. They learn how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, gain greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, they will form strong ties with one another. Through Willing Hearts, Mr. Tay hopes to make “the country's backyard” known to the younger generation, to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors.
As a non-profit organization, Willing Hearts depends heavily on donations and food collections. However, this does not trouble Mr. Tay. He believes that you have to let things flow in gradually, and not be stopped by concerns which create an unnecessary amount of stress. He calls the volunteers of Willing Hearts the organization's eyes and ears, as they are always on the lookout for the poor to lend a hand.

On the side of a busy road leading into Dundee, on the east coast of Scotland, the blades (叶片) of a small wind turbine (涡轮机) move in the wind of passing cars and trucks. It is charging a battery that is below the ground. This is an invention by Sanwal Muneer, a young engineer from Pakistan.
Muneer was inspired to create the turbine as he stood on the side of a racetrack several years ago. “At first, the light wind from the cars was just a welcome relief from the heat,” he says. “Then I started to think about how we could use that energy.”
The turbine stands 2.5 metres tall. Made of recyclable carbon fibres, it weighs just nine kilogrammes, making it easy to transport and set up. The fully-charged battery can hold a kilowatt of electricity, enough to run two lamps and a fan for around 40 hours. The idea is that this could be a source of electricity for rural communities in developing countries, or could power traffic lights or road signs in urban areas.
Dundee City Council is the first local authority to allow Muneer's company, Capture Mobility, to test the turbine beside its roads. “We want to help engineers create something inventive which is also beneficial to the city,” says Neil Gellatly, head of roads and transportation for Dundee City Council. Capture Mobility moved to Scotland from Pakistan in 2015. The Scottish government is investing in cleaner-energy technologies. Wind is also strong and plentiful all year round here. This makes it a good location for Muneer's company.
Production costs remain the company's biggest challenge. The turbines must be affordable in developing countries, but achieving this will depend on commercial (商业的) scale (规模). Capture Mobility is now analysing data from the turbine. Later this year, the company plans to send the next stage of the design to the producers. “I am passionate about engineering,” Muneer says. “But engineering is only a success if it improves lives.”
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A.By sharing opinions about turbines.
B.By offering the definition of turbines.
C.By introducing the inventor's experience.
D.By describing the scene of a wind turbine at work.
29.What can we learn about Muneer's turbine
A.It is fixed to the ground.
B.It turns traffic into energy.
C.It has been used to power traffic lights.
D.It is inspired by a rechargeable fan.
30.Why did Capture Mobility move to Scotland
A.To make full use of its wind with the Scottish government's permission.
B.To work with its inventive engineers.
C.To help solve its energy shortage.
D.To answer its government's invitation.
31.What will Capture Mobility do in the future
A.Make the turbine out of recyclable materials.
B.Invest in cleaner-energy technologies.
C.Test the turbine in Dundee.
D.Mass-produce the turbine.

Space settlement is widely debated. Some argue that living in space is unrealistic and that we should concentrate on improving life on Earth instead of potentially ruining another planet.
Taking living on Mars as an example, some scientists think it is a fantasy. To make it, Mars needs to first be warmed to be closer to Earth's average temperature, which will take about 100 years. Then the planet must be made to produce oxygen, which will take 100,000 years or more. A 2018 NASA study concluded that, based on the levels of CO2 found on Mars, the above plan is not practical. If a solution were found and conducted, a project of that magnitude would cost billions, perhaps trillions(万亿).
Besides, humans have made a mess of Earth. If humans are able to change an uninhabitable planet in space into an appealing home for humans, surely we have the capability to fix the problems we've created on Earth. John Traphagan, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, argued, “We need to stop holding the belief of human exceptionalism and start seeing humans as part of a collection of species. As long as we bring it with us to other worlds, we will repeat the same mistakes.”
However, others argue that humans have a moral obligation to save our species from extinction, and space settlement is one way of doing so. According to some philosophies, humans are the only beings capable of morality, and, thus, preserving our species is the most morally pressing task. Space settlement gives humankind the opportunity to significantly raise the chances of survival by providing access to the solar system's resources, and increasing knowledge of space and Earth.
Space settlement is the next logical(合理的) step in human growth. Humans are not a stationary species. Jeff Bezos, who traveled to space in 2021, stated, “The solar system can easily support a trillion humans. And if we had a trillion humans, we would have a thousand Einsteins and a thousand Mozarts.”
32.What information does paragraph 2 deliver
A.Solutions to living on Mars have been found.
B.The 2018 NASA study agreed to live on Mars.
C.Some scientists regard living on Mars as unrealistic.
D.The temperature on Mars is suitable for habitation.
33.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.The mess. B.The capability.
C.The belief. D.A collection of species.
34.According to Jeff Bezos, what benefit will space settlement bring
A.More human geniuses. B.Rich knowledge.
C.More diverse species. D.Unlimited wealth.
35.What is the author's attitude to space settlement
A.Doubtful. B.Objective. C.Worried. D.Positive.

It was a warm Sunday. 16-year-old Stella was settling down with a book, enjoying her quiet moment when her friend Bog came over with his 6-year-old sister. “Stella, please! I need you to help to watch Hazel! I have a lecture to attend this afternoon,” Bog begged.
Stella frowned, not thrilled with the idea of babysitting a little girl. However, Bog didn't offer her any other choice. He dropped Hazel off and quickly ran away before she could react.
With a heavy sigh, Stella unwillingly turned her attention to Hazel. “Fine, just stay there and don't cause any trouble,” she grumbled(嘟囔). To her surprise, little Hazel smiled and obediently sat by the table, drawing quietly without making a single noise.
For the next hour, Stella was quietly engaged in reading without being disturbed by Hazel. Gradually, her annoyance disappeared and she got accustomed to the company of Hazel. After a while, Hazel cautiously approached Stella, holding a picture. “Look. It's you and me,” she said in a low voice. It was a simple drawing of two girls, hand in hand, smiling.
Stella's heart softened as she looked at the drawing. She felt guilty about treating Hazel impatiently. Setting her book aside, Stella smiled warmly and said, “I love it. Thank you!” Then Stella began to join Hazel to create it together.
Just as they were lost in a world of colors, a sudden phone ringing broke the warm atmosphere. It was a phone call from her friend, reminding her about the long-awaited plan to go skating at the ice rink(溜冰场). Stella's heart sank because she had forgotten all about it. She was torn between the desire to go skating and her duty to look after Hazel. She was also worried that taking Hazel to skate would prevent her from enjoying gliding(滑)freely on the ice.
As Stella hesitated, Hazel looked up at her with hopeful eyes.

Hazel admiringly watched Stella and her friends gliding on the ice.

根据第二段中“Taking living on Mars as an example, some scientists think it is a fantasy...take 100,000 years or more.(以在火星上生活为例,一些科学家认为这是幻想。
根据画线词上文“We need to stop holding the belief of human exceptionalism and start seeing humans as part of a collection of species.(我们需要停止持有人类例外论的信念,并开始将人类视为物种集合的一部分。)”
根据最后一段中Jeff Bezos说的话“The solar system can easily support a trillion humans. And if we had a trillion humans, we would have a thousand Einsteins and a thousand Mozarts.” 故选A。
根据第二段中“...based on the levels of CO2 found on Mars, the above plan is not practical. If a solution were found and conducted, a project of that magnitude would cost billions, perhaps trillions.”可知,第二段介绍了太空定居面临的困难;根据第三段中“If humans are able to change an uninhabitable planet in space into an appealing home for humans, surely we have the capability to fix the problems we've created on Earth.”提到人类有能力解决其在地球上制造的问题;根据第四段中“However, others argue that humans have a moral obligation to save our species from extinction, and space settlement is one way of doing so.”

E项中的“get better acquainted”与上文中的“develop a friendship”呼应。
41.A 根据前文“A single tremble shook beneath my feet. The trees above me began to sway hard.”
42.C 后文“My vision blurred even more when I saw the remains of my house.” under pressure在压力之下;on hand在手头,在近旁;at war在交战中。
43.C 后文“I 45 all the times I played with my little brother and sister.”
45.B 根据空后的“all the times”可推知,作者想起(thought of)以往和弟弟妹妹一起玩耍的时光。adapt to适应;make out理解;look through浏览。
46.C 根据前文“I 45 all the times I played with my little brother and sister.”
47.D 根据后文“after lying on the ground for some time”可知,作者在地上休息了一会儿,恢复了一点力气(strength)。
故选A。
根据前文中的“Then came the deadly...”可知,此处应选B项“frightening(令人害怕的)”。
51.C 根据后文“When I reach the girl, she stares at me with sad eyes, and I gently stick out my hand for her to hold.”
故选A。
53.D 此处与后文“where we can help those around us”中“help”相呼应,应选D项“improve(提高,改善)”,表达作者希望用自己的力量帮助改善和他拥有相同经历的人的生活。
55.B 根据前文“Today I am going on a trip to California to help 51 of a recent earthquake.”
so...that... 故填that。
early in the morning清晨。故填in。
be doing sth. when... 故填was eating。
try one's best to do sth. 故填to climb。
bring sb. sth. 故填them。
One possible version:
Dear Peter,
You asked me about the Chinese painting exhibition to be held in your last letter and the following is a brief introduction.
The exhibition, whose theme is “Amazing China”, will take place from next Monday to Friday in the exhibition hall located on the third floor of the City Museum. Some extraordinary Chinese paintings created by the middle school students will be displayed.
By the way, visitors are not permitted to take photos during the exhibition. It is also bad manners to talk loudly in the museum.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
As Stella hesitated, Hazel looked up at her with hopeful eyes. “Can I come with you ” she asked eagerly. Stella's heart melted again at the sight of Hazel's twinkling eyes and she couldn't bear the thought of disappointing Hazel. “Of course,” she said softly with a warm smile. Hazel's face lit up with sheer delight as she jumped with excitement. Then, they quickly gathered things and headed to the ice rink. Upon arriving, Stella introduced Hazel to her friends, who welcomed her with open arms. They patiently helped Hazel put on skates and encouraged her to follow them onto the ice.
Hazel admiringly watched Stella and her friends gliding on the ice. Then she tentatively stepped onto the ice. Sensing Hazel's fear, Stella skated closer to help her. With patience and care, she gently taught Hazel how to find balance and glide on the ice. Step by step, they moved forward. Stella's gentle encouragement and support helped Hazel gain confidence. The initial fear gradually gave way to excitement as Hazel glided more smoothly. Watching it, Stella felt a sense of fulfillment welling up inside her. They had a fantastic time on the ice and gradually formed a bond going beyond being temporary companions.
