Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017 one of his paintings was sold for $81 million. 2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh's year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U.S. cities regarding his works. It's very surprising to know he sold only one painting in his lifetime, for only little profit(利润). How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away, who had expected to make his brother's works well-known. Fortunately, Theo's wife Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, as an English teacher at two different girls' schools before her marriage, was left with their son and a sizable art collection. She decided to help Theo's wishes come true. “During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent's art and letters,” says Luijten, author of Johanna's lifetime story.
Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh's name. To do this, she chose some of his works to sell and encouraged writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she met with frequent refusal. Johanna didn't lose heart. She lent some pieces to well-known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales. “One of Johanna's major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1905, where she collected no less than 484 of Van Gogh's works. A Van Gogh exhibition of this size would never again be matched,” Luijten explains. Another particular move happened in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh's letters. Theo had kept hundreds of letters. “This was of great importance, as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further,” says Luijten.
“There's little doubt that although Van Gogh was great, he wouldn't be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna,” said Luijten.

Skill in copying and moving images onto paper is an art form shining in history, Zhao Xu reports. The rubbing, the tracing(描摹)of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
To do this, a thin piece of paper was placed over the surface of the stone tablet(石匾) carved with characters. Then water, or later, ink, was applied smoothly to the back of the paper with just the right amount of pressure, to soften the paper and allow the details to move onto it. The paper was left to dry and then be lifted off the stone surface, carrying with it a copy of the original(原作).
Repeated hundreds of thousands of times during the Song era, this hands-on skill enabled educated members of Song society to have a chance to learn from masters' calligraphic works either from their own times or from earlier dynasties. Oftentimes, the original calligraphy, or even its stone version, became lost over time, thus making the rubbings the only surviving copy of the masterworks that had once existed. In that sense, the Song rubbings, and those behind them have helped to preserve a cultural relic much valued then and now.
Now, art lovers have the chance to visit it at an exhibition held at Beijing's Palace Museum on the theme of the Song rubbings. Of the 40 pieces on show, 20 are drawn from the collection of the Palace Museum, which holds a total of 150 Song rubbings. The other half are lent for the first time by the Art Museum The Chinese University of Hong Kong, whose rubbings were donated by J. S. Lee.
“What we have here is not just a showcase for the beauty of ink and paper, the art of calligraphy, carving and rubbing, but also the telling of stories shining in cultural pride and common spirit,” said Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum.
5.What do we know about the rubbing
A.There were five steps to make a rubbing. B.It moved characters from paper to a stone.
C.It was well developed in the Song Dynasty. D.Pressure was applied to the paper to smooth it.
6.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The development of the rubbing. B.The importance of the rubbing.
C.The process of the rubbing. D.The loss of the rubbing.
7.What does paragraph 4 suggest
A.There are 150 rubbings on show altogether.
B.Twenty of the rubbings were donated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
C.Sources of the exhibits are two organizations.
D.190 Song rubbings are housed in the Palace Museum now.
8.How does Wang Xudong feel about the exhibition

根据第一段中“It's very surprising to know he sold only one painting in his lifetime, for only little profit(利润).”
根据第三段中“Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh's name. To do this...Johanna didn't lose heart.”
A项和C项在文中并未提到,根据第二段中的“Theo's wife Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, as an English teacher at two different girls' schools before her marriage”可知Johanna曾在两所不同的女子学校担任英语老师,而不是在艺术学校担任老师,故排除D项。
根据最后一段中“There's little doubt that...without the influence of Johanna”可知,尽管梵高很伟大,但如果没有Johanna的影响,他不会被人们记住到今天的程度。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.(这位现在著名的画家去世后怎么没能逃脱人们的关注呢 可能是因为一个女人。)”

根据第一段中“The rubbing, the tracing of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).”
根据第四段中“Of the 40 pieces on show, 20 are drawn from the collection of the Palace Museum...The other half are lent for the first time by the Art Museum The Chinese University of Hong Kong, whose rubbings were donated by J. S. Lee.”
A项 根据第四段中的“Of the 40 pieces on show”可知A项错误。
B项 根据第四段中的“The other half are lent for the first time by the Art Museum The Chinese University of Hong Kong”可知另外20件拓本是由香港中文大学文物馆出借的,而不是捐赠的,故B项错误。
D项 根据第四段中的“which holds a total of 150 Song rubbings”可知故宫博物院收藏了150件宋朝拓本,故D项错误。
根据最后一段中王旭东说的话“What we have here is not just a showcase for the beauty of ink and paper, the art of calligraphy, carving and rubbing, but also the telling of stories shining in cultural pride and common spirit”可推知,王旭东对这次展览感到骄傲。故选A。
涂 2.hands-on adj.
Oftentimes, the original calligraphy, or even its stone version, became lost over time, thus making the rubbings the only surviving copy of the masterworks that had once existed.
“thus making the rubbings...”
