Jeannette Frescas was not concerned about the Thomas Fire until the fire reached her neighborhood in Ventura, California. “At midnight, I woke up with a flashlight in my face,” Frescas told CNN.“I looked out of my window and there were flames, a hundred feet, all around us.”
Like many residents, Frescas was caught off guard by the fire that had roared across Southern California for 13 days. She was one of tens of thousands of residents who got into cars and fled as winds drove the third-largest fire in modern state history through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
“What was once a paradise(天堂) was like a war zone(地带),” Frescas said of her apartment, which was destroyed by the fire. “It's the scariest thing I've been through in my entire life.” Ventura resident Patricia Rye woke up to her son-in-law pounding on her door. She didn't get a chance to pack any valuables. “I didn't have time to take anything,” Rye said. “My wallet, or any of my personal things.”
The fire was so terrible that more than 8,400 firefighters were working around the clock to save lives and contain(控制) it. Twelve thousand people were evacuated(撤离) in Santa Barbara County, with animals at the local zoo threatened as well. The Santa Barbara Zoo closed and many animals were placed into cages in case of possible evacuation. The zoo had kept most animals indoors, away from smoke.
Meanwhile, residents who had evacuated their homes in Ventura County—where the fire began—were allowed to return on Saturday. Jim Holden considered himself lucky because firefighters saved his home and items. “They put a water screen between my house and the house next door that was burning in an attempt to save it,” he said. “They broke in and they saved my family photos and my computer, and other things that they thought would be important to me.”

Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.
The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake that occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world gave money.
The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously(although very slowly) and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes—one section of the Earth crashes into another. Scientists can predict where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen along fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.
All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth's history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid(小行星) impacts(撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction(including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth's species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.
28.What did the world do when the tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean
A.They gave away money to the beggars.
B.They donated money to help the survivors.
C.They donated their possessions to the survivors.
D.They helped rebuild the coastlines and communities.
29.What can scientists predict about earthquakes
A.The possible time. B.The possible climate.
C.The possible place. D.The possible frequency.
30.What can we conclude according to the passage
A.There are some signs before natural disasters.
B.Earthquakes always happen along fault lines.
C.The huge tsunami in the Indian Ocean was caused by an earthquake.
D.We humans can do something to prevent natural disasters.
31.According to the passage, which can be the most dangerous natural disaster
A.Asteroid impacts. B.Earthquakes.
C.Tsunamis. D.Volcanoes.
D
Several years ago, Jason Box, a scientist from Ohio, flew 31 giant rolls of white plastic to a glacier(冰川) in Greenland. He and his team spread them across 10,000 feet of ice, then left. His idea was that the white blanket would reflect back the rays of the sun, keeping the ice cool below. When he came back to check the results, he found it worked. Exposed ice had melted faster than covered ice. He had saved two feet of the glacier in a short time. No coal plants(火电厂) were shut down, no jobs were lost, and nobody was taxed or fired. Just the sort of fix we're looking for.
“Thank you, but no thank you,” says Ralph King, a climate scientist. He told Grey Childs, an author and commentator, that people think technology can save the planet, but there are other things we need to deal with, like consumption. They burned $50,000 just for the helicopter to bring the plastic to the glacier. This experiment, quote-unquote, gives people false hope that climate change can be fixed without changing human behavior. It can't. Technology won't give us a free ride.
Individuals respond to climate change differently. Climatologist Kelly Smith is hardly alone in her prediction that someday soon we won't be climate victims(受害者); we will be climate choosers. More scientists agree with her—if the human race survives, the engineers will get smarter, the tools will get better, and one day we will control the climate. But that then “Just the mention of us controlling the climate sent a small shiver down my back,” Grey writes. “Something sounded wrong about stopping ice by our own will,” he says.
Me I like it better when the earth takes care of itself. I guess one day we will have to run the place, but for the moment, sitting at my desk, looking out at the trees bending wildly and the wind howling, I'm happy not to be in charge.
32.Why does the author mention Jason Box's experiment in the first paragraph
A.To introduce a possible solution to climate change.
B.To describe a misleading attempt to fix the climate.
C.To report on a successful experiment on saving the glacier.
D.To arouse people's attention to the problem of global warming.
33.Which statement would Ralph King most probably agree with
A.The experiment against climate change will not succeed.
B.Technology is not the final solution, let alone its high cost.
C.It's best to deal with climate change without changing our behavior.
D.Jason's experiment plays a significant role in fixing climate change.
34.Which of the following words has the similar meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 3

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Earthquakes can strike without warning. But many injuries and deaths from this kind of natural disaster can be prevented if people follow these safety tips.
If you're inside a building, stay there! One of the most dangerous things to do in an earthquake is to try to leave a building. 36 Drop to the ground. Get under an object that is not easily damaged. Hold on to it until the shaking stops. You can also get to a corner formed by two walls with your arms over your head. If you're in bed when the quake hits, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.
37 Don't take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop as quickly as possible and stay away from overpasses(立交桥), buildings, bridges or anything else that might fall or collapse. 38
If you are trapped in ruins, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or a piece of clothing. Use your cellphone to call for help if possible. Don't shout. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dust. 39
Be prepared for aftershocks. 40 However, sometimes they even happen months later. Therefore, if you are not in a safe position(位置) after the first shock, you should move quickly but carefully to a safer place.
A.If you're outside, go to an open space.
B.Don't get into a panic and stay calm.
C.Don't park your car under a tree or any tall objects.
D.Tap on a pipe or the wall so rescuers can find you.

On the tenth anniversary of my father's death, I awoke to loud fire alarms at 3:30 a.m. Alexis, my elder daughter, was standing in the hallway with her cellphone and a blanket was wrapped around her younger sister, Sierra. We ran down the stairs to the main floor. The girls stood by the front door while I checked for the cause of the alarms. When I opened the door to my living room, I could see the carpets were smoking heavily. My house was really on fire.
I shouted to the girls, “Get out! The house is on fire!” They turned and ran out the front door, followed by me. Then we ran through the woods to our neighbor's house. I knocked on my neighbor's front door as fire engines passed by.
Later, I was told that it took the firemen a long time to put out the fire. Standing outside my burned house the next day, I got caught up in lots of questions. I had no cash or bank cards. How was I going to pay for anything Where would we live What would happen to my house now I didn't even know where to start. Luckily, our community helped us a lot.
The fire burned almost everything, but I still decided to visit our burned house to search through the ruins. It's interesting how you learn what really matters to you in those conditions. I found myself primarily searching for my father's watch. I also found other treasures as I searched for his watch, including the ring my mom gave me when I left for college, a watch my grandmother gave me for high school graduation, and my daughter's unworn dress, which was ruined. I found the last shirt my father had worn before his hospital stay. We had taken a trip after his second course of chemo(化疗). It was the last vacation we had taken before his death. At that moment, I felt differently about the fire.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I realized the fire gave us more than it took away.
My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
What Can We Do to Reduce Global Warming
It is reported that the glacier at the North Pole is melting faster than ever. There is no doubt that the earth is getting warmer and warmer. It's time for us to take action to control the amount of greenhouse gases.
To begin with, we can turn off the electrical appliances when they're not being used. In addition, it's necessary to use things made from recycled materials. Furthermore, more trees should be planted, which can absorb carbon dioxide amazingly.
In a word, I do believe our joint efforts do count and will definitely pay off.
第二节
One possible version:
I realized the fire gave us more than it took away. One of the greatest gifts we received was the kindness and care from our community. Some people dropped by with food, clothing and money. Others came to help us search for treasures in the ruins. My warm-hearted neighbor offered a room to the three of us while our house was being repaired. Another greatest gift we received was the belief that nothing matters more than family. The fire did burn away lots of our personal items, but we saved the most valuable things.
My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning. I learn to treasure everything I have and not to complain about the loss. I also teach Alexis and Sierra to do the same as me. Most importantly, my girls and I keep paying attention to those who are in trouble. It is of great importance for us to pay back the kindness we have received, for which we will be grateful forever.
