(2023安徽名校联盟联考)
Who would have thought a teenager's mobile phone could help them manage their mental health by supporting a good night's sleep A new app aimed at 12- to 16-year-olds is showing strong early results, both improving the hours of sleep and reducing depression and anxiety.
Sleep Ninja, a free app created by the Black Dog Institute, a mental health research organization, has shown significant early results in improving teenagers' sleep patterns, so critical not only to school readiness but also to overall good mental health, co-creator Aliza Werner-Seidler said.
“Adolescents struggle to get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night,” Dr Werner-Seidler, a clinical psychologist, said. “As a result, approximately 40 per cent of all young people will experience a significant sleep problem in early high school which heightens their risk of mental ill health, which is a risk factor for a range of disorders including depression and anxiety.”
Those using the app nominate a time to be up in the morning to make it to school or other activities. From there, it works backwards, determining when they should be in bed. The app gives an alert to start a pre-bed routine, which is launched at least an hour before bed time. Part of that routine is to put the phone and other devices away, and engage in behaviors more suitable to sleep. Some of these are simply to have a shower, clean teeth and read a book. But the app also offers a form of practical tips to help them establish sleep routines, things like how to set up their bedroom, what to do during the day to improve their chances of sleep and how to reduce those negative repetitive thoughts that come in at night.
Dr Werner-Seidler said Sleep Ninja was the only such app designed specifically for adolescents, and the results so far had been very encouraging. She added that we also saw rates of depression drop from 77 per cent at the start of the study to 44 per cent after using the app.

Do you really need a new mobile phone every 2 years
If you're looking to replace or upgrade your smartphone in the coming year, think it over. 1 Do you simply have the desire to get the new, shiny technology There are some issues to consider besides the new device's affordability.
Our desire to always have the newest smartphone comes at a high environmental cost. According to Swappie, which repairs and resells iPhones, 1.4 billion new smartphones forecast to be shipped this year will generate 146 million tons of planet-warming emissions. 2
What can you do
Resist the desire to upgrade your smartphone. If your phone still works, get as much life as you can out of it. “The greenest smartphone is the one you already own,” Stratton said.
Get it fixed. If your phone breaks, get it repaired directly by the manufacturer or take it to a store to repair your phone brand. 3
Sell it instead of throwing it. You can sell your used smartphone to specialized repairing companies like Swappie to give it a second life. 4 This is due to the materials used to produce them.
5 If your phone is completely broken and cannot be sold, you can still recycle it. You just need to do a little bit of research into how and where to correctly recycle it.
A.Make it function.
B.Recycle it properly.
C.Do you really need a new phone
D.Broken phones can still be valuable.
E.Where can you get a new smartphone

长难句
原句 For the children, a major challenge was homework, most of which is now given online, so the lack of the Internet meanwhile seemed to provide a new version of “the dog ate my homework” excuse.
分析 本句是so连接的并列复合句。在前一分句中“most of which is now given online”是“most+of+关系代词”引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰homework。
译文 对孩子们来说,主要的挑战是家庭作业,现在大部分作业是在网上布置的,所以互联网的缺失另一方面似乎提供了“狗吃了我的家庭作业”这个借口的一个新版本。
