Ecuador
Ecuador is similar to the United States in many ways, and as a result has become a popular American getaway. They even use the US Dollar for their currency. Sweat ran its way down my cheeks. It was hot, and the air was still and wet. One final play and the State Softball Championship was ours. I looked towards people who were watching the game. Sure enough, I found my mom. I always hoped my dad were here. The farm needed his full attention, but I did not care.
Finally, we won! State Champs! I let out a stream of happiness, full of tears. My mom made a “V” to celebrate my success and smiled. I smiled back at her. We all received medals, but I cannot remember any of it. I concentrated my thoughts on my dad. I ran to my mom, asking for her cellphone. I had to tell my dad about the happiest day of my life, and complained (抱怨) about why he did not care.
The phone rang twice, and no one answered. My heart sank, but I tried again anyway. “Hello ” answered my dad. “Dad!” I cried. “We won State!” There was silence. “Dad ” I could hear something on the other end. “Are you crying ” “I’m just really happy for you, Meggie,” he said. “And I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”
An apology was all I needed. I hung up the phone feeling relaxed, and I began to understand how it must feel to be a father. I forgave him for never being there. He worked so I could play. My father loved me enough to let me experience life’s happiest moments without him.
4. Why did Meggie’s father fail to go to watch her game
A. He had a full schedule to work on the farm. B. Meggie’s mother took his place to be there.

D. Meggie could enjoy every moment without her father.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. My Final Game B. My Growing Pain
C. A Father’s Love D. A Father’s Farm

As can be seen on almost any basis, English is the nearest thing that has ever been to a global language. Its worldwide reach is much greater than anything achieved historically by Latin or French, and there has never been a language as widely spoken as English. Although English now appears to be in a powerful position in the modern world, its future as a global language is not necessarily assured. In the Middle Ages, Latin seemed forever to be set as the language of education and culture, as did French in the 18th century. But conditions change, and there are several factors which might make a difference to such a change once again.
There is a close link between language and power. The USA, with its huge advantage in economic, technical and cultural terms, is the driving force behind English in the world today. However, if the USA were to lose its position of economic and technical advantage, then the “language loyalties” of other countries may well shift to the new dominant(占优势的)power. Nowadays, perhaps the only possible candidate(候选人)for such a replacement would be China.
A change in population (and population growth) trends may prove to be an influential factor. A report by the British Council suggests that the number of people learning English is likely to continue to increase over the next 10-15 years peaking at around 2 billion, after which a decline(下降)is predicted. Various tries have been made to develop a simpler “controlled” English language suitable for international usage(e.g. Basic English, Plain English, Special English, Essential World English, etc). Increasingly, the long-term future of English as a global language probably lies in the hands of Asia, and especially the huge populations of India and China.
8. What do the underlined words “such a change” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. English may lose its dominant position one day.
B. English may not be used in education and culture.
C. Latin may be set as the language of education and culture.
D. French may be spoken as widely as English in the future.
9. What can be learned from paragraph 2
A. The USA has a great number of Chinese learners.
B. Other countries will shift to learn French in the future.
C. Population growth influences the number of language learners.
D. The position of a language is affected by the power of its country.
10. Why have tries been made to develop a simpler "controlled” English
A. To prove English is changing. B. To show English is still popular.
C. To attract more people to use English. D. To lower the cost of learning English.
11. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A novel. B. A magazine. C. A diary. D. A tourist handbook.
D
The World Happiness Report, a United Nations agency report, measures (估量) how happy people are, and why. Norway is the happiest place on Earth—beating neighbour Denmark from the number one position.
Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last. Western Europe and North America took up most of the places at the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th.
The World Happiness Report mainly depends on asking a simple question of more than 1,000 people every year in more than150 countries. “Imagine a ladder (梯子), with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top,” the question asks, “The top of the ladder is the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder is the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time ”
The average result is the country’s score—from Norway’s 7.54 to the Central African Republic’s 2.69. But the report also tries to explain why one country is happier than another. It looks at reasons including economic strength (经济实力) social support, freedom of choice, and generosity.
This year’s report also has a text titled “restoring (恢复) American happiness”, which examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite continually-increasing economic improvement. “The United States can and should raise happiness by solving America’s social problems- rising inequality and distrust-rather than focusing mainly on economic growth,” the authors said.
Jeffrey Sachs, the director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which published the report, said President Donald Trump’s policies were likely to make things worse.
12. Which of the following is the correct order of the countries in terms of happiness levels
A. Denmark the UK, the US, the Central African Republic
B. Denmark, the US, the UK, the Central African Republic
C. the US, Denmark, the UK, the Central African Republic
D. Denmark, the US, the Central African Republic, the UK
13. How does the World Happiness Report measure happiness
A. By asking a question. B. By having a conversation.
C. By doing scientific research. D. By carrying out an online survey.
14. What can we know about America form the passage
A. Its people live an unhappy life.
B. Its economy is going downhill.
C. Its social problems are hard to solve.
D. It has a lower happiness level than before.
15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To explain the reason for being happy.
B. To introduce the World Happiness Report.
C. To talk about America’s social problem.
D. To discuss the policies by Donald Trump.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school. On turning a cornner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle with (管闲事) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down on Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behaviour, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that they ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home together with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him.
Paragraph 1
It seemed as if Robert would be dying.

A report by the British Council suggests that the number of people learning English is likely to continue to increase over the next 10-15 years, peaking at around 2 billion, after which a decline(下降)is predicted.
D French may be spoken as widely as English in the future.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
Thus, Robert’s life was saved.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Part 1:
It seemed as if Robert would be dying. Just at that moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore.
Part 2:
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed of having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behaviour and asked for forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was — never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
