When I was a kid, my family farmed 200 acres with mules (骡子), and the most naughty one was Tobe. It’d frequently jump out and run around. But when asked why he liked it, Dad would say, “When it comes to farm work, Tobe comes up to standard.”
Dad died when I was 11, and we had to sell the farm. Those were hard years, but Mom managed to give me my first music lesson. Before long our neighbors liked my songs so much that I decided to make a career in singing.
At 17 I left home for a radio station in Jackson and this job made me discover how inexperienced I was. I made up my mind that I would practice until I came up to standard. I took a job as a driver. With 8 hours spent in the car, I could spend the rest of the time practicing. Finally, when I was good enough, I began playing for audiences nationwide.
By now, I had two kids and I knew what a family was without a dad, so I quit the performances and entered the most depressing (令人消沉的) years of my life with all the clothing, homework, and duties around the house. That was when I thought about Tobe. It was self-willed, but in the field, where it mattered, Tobe came up to standard. So I started listening and made a discovery. My kids’ lifestyle may be different. But where standards are concerned (涉及) — for things like honesty and courage — they often do better than some of us.
Not long ago my son Dick told me he was going to apply for a job at a TV station. “ I know the general manager. I’ll put in a good word for you,” I said. “I’d rather go alone,” he replied. “If I’m not good enough yet to do the job, I shouldn’t get it.” Then I realized he wanted to be up to standard. I felt proud the minute he came home shouting, “ Dad, I got the job!”
4. Why did the author’s father like Tobe
A. It was full of life. B. It was good at farm work.
C. It enjoyed farm work very much. D. It set the standard for others.
5. What made the author realize his inexperience in music
A. Performing for audiences. B. Taking the job as a driver.
C. Working in a radio station. D. Having his first music lesson.
6. What did the author discover about his kids
A. They led a healthy lifestyle. B. They were good at listening.
C. They were concerned about standards. D. They had their own shining points.
7. How did Dick react to the author’s offer of help with the job
A. He thought it useless. B. He was proud of the chance.
C. He turned it down. D. He sought further advice.

There are lots of gift-giving cultures going on in different counties during Christmas Day. Different cultures have different taboos (禁忌) about gifts.
Gifts that cannot be given include sharp objects like swords, knives, scissors, or letter openers. These objects send bright energy to the receiver. They are said to cut the friendship. If you receive one, the remedy (补救) for the bad luck from this type of gift is to immediately give the giver a coin. It symbolizes that you “buy” the gift from them. Watches and clocks are popular gifts in America. In Eastern culture, they suggest a limited life. They symbolize time running out.
Never give an empty wallet. It should always include a small amount of money. If you receive one as a gift, you can remedy any bad luck you might experience by immediately adding some money and giving it away to someone else.
Handkerchiefs are for wiping away tears and sweat. They suggest that you expect the receiver to crying in the future or wipe away sweat from frustration (挫折).
Sweets like chocolates, wines and fruits are a good luck gift. They represent that you wish the person to have a sweet life, so they symbolize good fortune. Getting something sweet as a gift is said to bring good fortune. You should never give the gift to others or throw them away. However, it is OK to share some with your family or friends.
Never give the gifts that others send you unless you are doing it to remedy bad luck from a gift you receive. Otherwise, when you recycle a gift, it symbolizes that you are giving away the relationship you have with the person who gives you the gift.
8. Which of the following can be sent as a gift
A. Swords. B. Knives. C. Scissors. D. Letters.
9. If you have a friend from Eastern culture, you can buy the following as a gift EXCEPT_____________.
A. some chocolates B. a bottle of wine
C. a beautiful clock D. some fruits
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Never give the gifts that others send you to others.
B. You can give gifts that others send you to others freely.
C. When you recycle a gift, it always means you dislike the gift-giver.
D. It is OK to give the gifts to others to remedy bad luck.

Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork. People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their life, and sports can help them improve that skill. Taking part in sports can help develop a positive attitude towards life, which will help in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants (参与者) said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” kids of their childhood, but offers unique opportunities. Athletes can get success to live their dream life by playing sports. Even though sports are time-consuming, they offer distinctive opportunities.
In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.

A. To show a reason B. To give an example.
C. To list a background. D. To draw out a new point.
12. What is the most participants’ attitude to sports
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
13. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Common B. Unreasonable C. Unique. D. Frequent.
14. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The ways to play sports.
B. The reasons for playing sports.

Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants (参与者) said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
