Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.

A charming three-story home sits at the corner of 10th and Center streets on the Georgia Instiute of Technology (Georgin Tech) campus in Atlanta. From the outside, it appears just like any other home, but inside, Georgia Tech researchers are testing and developing advanced devices to determine which can make the home safer and smarter — for older adults.
The house is actually a living lab, called the Aware Home, and research conducted there has revealed (显示) many top home related concerns among older adults — unattended cooking, water left running, TVs left on... and doors left unlocked.
Now, some in home technologies are in development — or on the market — to address those concerns.
One new device called Inirv React connects your stove (炉具) to a sensor in your home and a smartphone app. The sensor will automatically turn the stove off if it no longer detects movement around the appliance after a certain period of time. You can also turn the stove off using your smartphone.
Devices of the future are expected to collect and use date to become smarter, according to Elizabeth Mynatt, a professor at Georgia Tech. “They will learn more about your habits, your likes, your dislikes, your routines, when you’re most likely to forget to take your medicine, what are the aspects (方面) of your health that need the most attention,” she said.
With any technology, “most people ask that question ‘How invasive (侵扰的) is it ’. But what we hear from older adults is that they value the security and the safety that the technology provides for them,” Mynatt said.
75- year-old Albert Bolet of Atlanta thinks most older adults are typically ready to bring technology into their homes. “People have the misguided impression that seniors are opposed to technology.” said Bolet. “We do understand wireless technology, and we understand how these things will make things easier. Being independent is most important in the mind of anybody that gets to be our age or older.”
8. What is the Aware Home
A. A smart house. B. A research lab.
C. A nursing home. D. A science museum.
9. What will Inirv React do when it senses no movement around a stove for long
A. Turn the stove off directly.
B. Give out a warning sound.
C. Activate a sensor in the house.
D. Send a message to a connected phone.
10. What will future smart home devices be like according to Mynatt
A. They will provide medical advice.
B. They will be more like caregivers.
C. They will become more personalized.
D. They will replace caregivers in most case.
11. What did Atbert Bolet say about most seniors
A. They are willing to use smart home devices.
B. They find it hard to keep up with new technology.
C. They prefer a simple life without technology.
D. They are becoming more dependent on the Internet.
D
Scientists once considered sleep to be like a shadow getting drawn over a window between the brain and the outside world: when the shadow is closed, the brain stops reacting to outside stimuli (刺激).
A study published on 12 October in Nature Neuroscience suggests that there might be periods during sleep when that shade is partially open.
A few years ago, Oudiette, a cognitive scientist in France, began questioning the definition of sleep after she and her team conducted an experiment in which they were able to communicate with people who are aware that they are dreaming while they sleep — otherwise known as clear dreamers. During these people’s dreams, experimenters were able to ask questions and get responses through eye and facial-muscle movements.
Karen Konkoly, who was a co-author on that study, says “it was a big open question in our minds whether communication would be possible with non-clear dreamers.”
So Oudiette continued with the work. In her latest study, she and her colleagues observed 27 people with narcolepsy (嗜睡症) — characterized by daytime sleepiness and a high frequency of clear dreams — and 22 people without the condition. While they were sleeping, participants were repeatedly asked to frown or smile. All of them responded accurately to at least 70% of these tips. Overall response rates were higher for all participants during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when the deepest sleep occurs but the brain remains quite active, than during other sleep stages.
This study is part of a larger advance in the field of sleep research, says Mélanie Strauss,a cognitive scientist in Brussels. Researchers are moving away from monitoring sleep mainly with EEG (脑电图) and towards “fine grained” approaches that combine EEG with various tasks and stimuli — a strategy that could help to cast light on specific diseases or conditions, she says.
12. What did scientists think of sleep in the past
A. It happens during different periods.
B. It is a shadow formed within the brain.
C. It suggests a weakening in the brain’s functions.
D. It means a stop in brain’s response to the outside.
13. How did clear dreamers react to the experimenters
A. By moving their face and eyes. B. By repeating the questions.
C. By providing accurate answers. D. By talking about their dream.
14. What can we learn about the participants in the latest study
A. They like sleeping in the daytime.
B. They remember their dreams clearly.
C. They do exactly as they’re told during sleep.
D. They show higher response in the deepest sleep.
15. What does Mélanie Strauss mainly tell us in the last paragraph
A. The limitation of using EEG. B. A cure for specific diseases.
C. The progress of the sleep research. D. A method of detecting sleep

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (贫困).

“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words. A bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly. When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” he said. “I gave my money to a poor family, who seemed to be badly in need of help. I think I can wait for my books until next New Year.”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” Edward can’t believe it! “I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help people around you!” his father added. Holding the books, Edward felt they were the best gift in the world.
