Once I took the plane by myself. It was clear that the kid across from me was flying alone, too. She was singing a song to herself softly. Imagining if my two daughters were traveling alone, they might feel helpless and want others to talk with them, I decided to make conversation.
“What are you singing about, honey ” “Oh that,” she said, clearly happy to have someone to talk to. “Well, Grandma’s always surprised when I visit by plane. You know, how far you can come and how fast. I don’t think they had many planes when she was little. I mean, seriously, they had a horse. Anyway, Grandma would tell me that she’d think of me from time to time and say to herself, ‘I wonder where you are. I wonder where you are going.’ Then she’d always add, ‘Someplace important, I’m sure!’ So I made it into a song for us. I love my grandma.”
“Right now I’m on my way to Grandma’s house and I’m just singing that song to myself and thinking the same about her, ‘I wonder where you are. I wonder where you are going.’ That’s all.”
“Wow,” I said. “That’s really sweet. So, is it just you and Grandma or is your mom or dad coming out later ”
“Oh, everyone will be there and Mom’s s been there for two weeks already, making arrangements (安排).”
“Arrangements ”
“For Grandma’s funeral (葬礼).”
All of a sudden, I was like being hit in the stomach. It seemed something was stuck in my throat (喉咙) and I realized what she’d been singing, “I wonder where you are...” about her Grandma who’d been gone.
Sometimes when I see a family at the supermarket or ice cream stand, I’ll think of that kid and start singing her song — I wonder where you are. I wonder where you’re going. Someplace important, I’m sure.

AI is becoming more and more common in modern healthcare, especially in the field of radiology (放射学), where it can be used to analyse scan image (分析扫描图像). But while the radiology community, including children's radiologists, are generally positive about AI use, little attention has been paid to how children and young adults feel about using AI to analyse their own scan images.
A national study, led by UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), asked children and young people aged 6 to 23 years old, across all four UK nations for their ideas on how they would like AI to be used in their healthcare.
The results of the survey showed that children and young people are cautious (谨慎的), but generally positive about AI. Young people didn't mind using AI in healthcare, especially if it could improve their care and outcomes. However, they wanted the tools to be directed by healthcare professionals as they feel there are something that AI cannot do and when faced between a human and computer, they would be more willing to trust the human.
Lead researcher, Professor Susan Shelmerdine and her team are hoping to develop AI tools that can create written reports direct from radiology images and allow patients to ask the AI questions about their imaging.
Professor Shelmerdine said, “The number of trained children’s radiologists in the UK is relatively small, so tools like AI could help upskill our workforce to enable more care for patients who don't have the chance to visit specialist hospitals like GOSH.”
“However, we cannot assume that we know what children want. It was encouraging to see that when asked, children and young people were positive about the use of AI in their healthcare, but it was also important to understand what was important to them— such as human oversight— so that we can factor this into the development of new tools and treatments,” Shelmerdine added.
8. Which question might children be asked to answer in the survey
A. Do you mind using AI in your healthcare
B. Do you know the benefit of AI technology
C. Are you cautious about the use of AI technology
D. Have you ever seen AI technology used in a hospital
9. What concerns young adults about AI in their healthcare
A. AI might cause harm to their health. B. AI may not be as trustworthy as humans.
C. AI will make human doctors lose their jobs. D. AI can cause more mistakes in radiology images.
10. What is the goal of the AI tools being developed by Shelmerdine's team
A. To attract more children's radiologists. B. To train workforce to care for more people.
C. To replace children's radiologists completely. D. To report radiology images in written forms.
11. What is Shelmerdine's attitude toward using AI in children's healthcare
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Cautious. D. Unacceptable.
D
When you’re in high school, deciding what you’d like to study at college is not always easy. We may choose to balance (平衡) our own hopes and dreams with those of our parents, as well as think about the courses that may help us to find work in the future. But what helps us to make our final decision
Researchers from South Korea have been trying to find out the influence that conversations with parents have on high school students’ course choices. And they think they might have found a pattern (模式). The study showed that the more time children spend talking with their parents about their choices, the more likely they are to study medicine, education, physical education, art or music after finishing high school.
The researchers looked at information of almost 1,300 students who were in the second year of high school in 2016, and followed them as they moved on to college. They found that students who often talked with their parents about their interests and their future studies were more likely to choose courses that need quite specialized ability instead of courses like humanities and social sciences.
The research team said that South Korean parents were now having more of an influence on their children’s choices about college. “Talking with parents greatly influences students’ decisions on whether to go to college,” they said.
But there were other important factors (因素) too. Children with richer parents were more likely to go to college, and students with higher grades in math were also more likely to go to college. But grades in Korean and English were not so important in deciding whether or not a student went on to study at college.
