A 12-year-old boy from Florida won the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee (2024 SNSB) after correctly spelling nearly 29 words in 90 seconds.
Seventh grader Bruhat Soma of St. Petersburg, Fla. was named the winner of the famous spelling competition. During the event, which took place in Oxon Hill, Md., Soma beat runner-up Faizan Zaki, a sixth grader from Dallas. The two faced off in a quick round tiebreaker match (决胜局) — before the pair could even compete against each other in a conventional round. Soma — one of just eight finalists in the bee, the fewest number of competitors in the final round in 14 years — finished the round with 29 words spelled correctly. Meanwhile, Zaki attempted 25 words and missed four of them. The Scripps organization announced that Soma’s winning word was abseil. It’s a word used in the sport of mountaineering. This was Soma’s third appearance in the bee. In 2022, he tied for 163rd place. Last year, he came 74th.
Soma’s spelling coach was 16-year-old speller Sam Evans, who coached three of the top four finishers. The 12-year-old’s charities of choice to represent were the Rays Baseball Foundation and Rowdies Soccer Fund. The prizes for the first-place winner include a 850,000 cash prize from the organization, a $2,500 cash prize and reference library from Merriam-Webster and $400 worth of reference works from Encyclopadia Britannica.
“I’ve been paying much attention to it this whole year,” Soma said in an interview, revealing that he often studied spelling for six hours a day on weekdays and over 10 hours a day on weekends. “After I lost in the quarter-finals last year, I knew what I had to do to win. And then when I won, it was a dream come true,” he added. “So I was so happy.”

A recent study reveals that a majority of Americans still believe that it was their parents who taught them how to do cleaning.
For some, their families weren’t the only resource for learning how to clean. About one in three parents said they also learned to clean from their past or current jobs, from their significant other, or from their friends.
“Cleaning can be surprisingly subjective. The ‘proper’ way to clean can vary greatly depending on your culture, how you were raised, and who you learned from,” says Tanu Grewal, who led the study. “At the end of the day, parents play a crucial role in shaping their children’s cleaning habits and attitudes, instilling good practices that last a lifetime.”
The results also showed that three-quarters of parents plan on teaching their kids everything about cleaning that they were never taught, and four-fifths have already thought of the ways to teach kids cleaning habits. In fact, 7 in 10 believe how they learned to clean growing up could have had a positive impact on how they clean today. For more than six-tenths, cleaning is now considered an art form. Parents think that children of different ages should do different cleaning jobs. For example, for most cleaning jobs — folding laundry, washing dishes, floor cleaning, and taking out the rubbish — parents believe their kids can start participating by age 10.
Instead of viewing it as a punishment, four-fifths of parents believe cleaning can be made into a family activity, tending to make cleaning something that brings everyone in the house together in a joyful way.
“Cleaning is part of everyone’s tradition one way or another — whether you learn how to clean from your parents or want to start your own cleaning traditions with your children, it is something that is passed down through generations.” Grewal continues.
8. Which statement best describes the resources for people to learn how to clean
A. They have limited backgrounds. B. They come from various ways.
C. They depend on people’s friends. D. They are good for people’s jobs.
9. What does the underlined word “instilling” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Teaching. B. Remembering. C. Comparing. D. Exploring.
10. Which is the percentage of parents considering how to teach kids to keep clean
A. 60%. B. 70%. C. 75%. D. 80%.
11. What does Grewal want to express about cleaning in the last paragraph
A. It’s a personal skill. B. It’s a source of happiness.
C. It’s a family culture. D. It’s a punishment to kids.
D
Climate change is causing widespread global impacts, but now scientists are finding that it’s changing the very planet itself. Earth’s rotation (自转) is slowing down, making the length of a day slightly longer.
As temperatures rise, massive amounts of ice are melting (融化) from Greenland and Antaretica. That meltwater flows into the oceans, making the middle of the planet become thicker. Then, its daily rotation takes a bit longer. The change is tiny, measured in milliseconds, which is one- thousandth of a second. Now, the ice at the poles is rapidly melting. Since 1993, global sea levels have risen by 4 inches on average and will likely rise by 2 feet or more by the end of the century, depending on how much humans control climate pollution. Scientist Surendra Adhikari and his workmates found that melting ice has slowed the planet’s rotation by 1.33 milliseconds per century since 2000. They believe that if climate pollution remains the same like today, that’ll increase to 2.62 milliseconds by the end of the century.
While that amount of time doesn’t mean much to everyday life, it can pose problems to highly connected computer networks that society depends on. For example, computer network s control GPS and space navigation, as well as financial institutions and cellphone networks. The problem arises because timekeeping is controlled by atomic clocks now, not the rotation of the Earth. Adjusting (调整) their clocks can be a major technological headache. Tech companies have been pushing back against the adjustments, saying they can cause networks to crash.
Melting ice has far more serious consequences for the planet than time. Millions of people face losing their homes as ice melts and sea levels keep rising. “If you live in a low-lying coastal area, then you’re not concerned about the milliseconds.” scientist Judah Levine says. “That’s the least of your worries. You have much more serious problems to deal with.”
12. What did Adhikari’s team find about Earth’s rotation
A. It’s based on global sea levels. B. It’ll cause climate change.
C. It’ll speed up in the near future. D. It’s affected by climate pollution.
13. How do the computer network s face time change
A. They handle it easily. B. They struggle with it.
C. They ignore its effects. D. They welcome it fully.
14. What does Levine advise those living on the coast to do
A. Consider their own survival. B. Say no to adding milliseconds.
C. Fill low-lying areas with stones. D. Care about the time of ice melting.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Climate Change and Meltwater B. Earth’s Rotation in Trouble
C. The Effects of Climate on Ocean D. The Impact of Melting Ice

A Teaching.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

Kelly, a 26-year-old who graduated from graduate school and was happily married to Brad Shoemaker. was living a perfect life.
However, the birth of their son Jeremy brought significant changes. Brad noticed Kelly’s constant worry about their living situation in the city flat and suggested moving to the countryside. “Kelly, I think moving to the countryside would be better for us and Jeremy. What do you think ” Brad asked. Kelly nodded without hesitation. When they moved, Jeremy was 2 years old and he was absolutely excited about the new home surrounded by woods. “This is the best place ever, Mommy!” he said, his eyes shining with excitement as he ran around the yard.
One cold night, a knock on the front door woke them up. “What was that ” Kelly asked in fear. When Brad and Kelly opened the door, they discovered a wounded squirrel (松鼠) with an open wound on one of its legs. Kelly rushed to help. “Poor thing,” she said. Her heart ached as she saw the wound.
The Shoemakers took the injured squirrel in, cleaned its wound, applied some medicine to it, and Jeremy brought a bedcover for warmth. “Let’s call it Lily,” Jeremy suggested. Eventually, Lily recovered and was released back into the wild.
After Lily’s leaving, a sense of emptiness filled the house and soon, strange knocks on the front door which was usually unlocked began at night. The first time they heard the sounds, the Shoemakers rushed to the door. “I don’t see anything,” Brad said, puzzled. “This is so strange,” Kelly responded.
The knocks continued for a month, then a year. Upset by the situation, Brad installed (安装) cameras all over the backyard and the driveway. Kelly spent the entire weekend examining the cameras and at 2 am, she was surprised by what she saw.

【答案】One possible version:
Kelly saw Lily walking 3 kids through the door to the basement (地下室). Seeing this, Kelly quickly woke Brad and Jeremy, her voice shaky with disbelief. “Brad, Jeremy, come quick! It’s Lily and her babies!” Brad rubbed his sleepy eyes and rushed to the cameras, his jaw dropping at the sight. “This is incredible. I never expected this.” Jeremy said with excitement, “See, Mom and Dad Our kindness to Lily has brought her back to us. Maybe she trusts us to keep her kids safe.” They finally figured out who had been making the sounds. Lily had spent the entire time housed in their basement!
The Shoemakers observed Lily and her kids from a distance. They left nuts and fruits outside the door, showing their continued care and support. Lily, seeming to understand their intentions, would sometimes stop and look at the kind family gratefully. One sunny afternoon, Jeremy placed the old and soft bedcover which was used to keep Lily warm near the entrance of the basement and left some fresh water. “I hope they know we mean well,” he whispered. And in response, Lily appeared with her kids, carefully approaching the offerings. A new bond of trust was formed, one that would last for many years to come.
