At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damage a his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. A year later, frustrated with the lack of rehab(康复) resources available for people like himself in New Orleans, the former broadcast engineer decided that his hometown needed an adaptive gym to cater for those with injuries and disabilities. Based on the need, Raymond financed the establishment of Split Second Fitness in 2021, with specially designed workout equipment and therapy programs that allow clients to grow stronger without the aim of making money.
The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a state-of-the-art rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. “I knew I had to get back home and figure out how to do that,” says the natural-born net-worker, who spent three years raising funds and learning how to run an organization.
Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living. “Anybody’s life can change in a spit second like mine did,” explains Raymond. “What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope ’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow ’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says. “Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues ”
4. Which statement fits Split Second Fitness
A. It is open to everyone. B. It is made up of many gyms.
C. It is run on a non-profit basis. D. It is funded by TV programs.
5. What inspired Raymond to set up Split Second Fitness
A. A live broadcast. B. A rehab experience.
C. A request from a fitness center. D. A suggestion from a former workmate.
6. What can we learn about Split Second Fitness from paragraph 4
A. Its challenges and difficulties. B. Its facilities and staff.
C. Its background and change. D. Its goal and mission.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Hope in Motion: a Road to Self-discovery
B. Life with a Disability: a Painful Experience
C. Gyms: Making You Healthier and Stronger
D. Instructors: Helping You Get Back on Track

When the sun reaches its peak activity, known as solar maximum, its magnetic (磁的) field will reverse (逆转). This happens roughly every l1 years, marking an important stage in the solar cycle. It indicates the halfway point of solar maximum, the height of solar activity, and the beginning of the shift toward solar minimum.
The last time the sun’s magnetic field flipped was toward the end of 2013. To understand the magnetic field’s reversal, first, it’s important to be familiar with the solar cycle. This approximately 11-year cycle of solar activity, driven by the sun’s magnetic field, is indicated by the frequency and intensity of sunspots visible on the surface. The height of solar activity during a given solar cycle is known as solar maximum, and current estimates predict it will occur between late 2024 and early 2026.
“But there is another important, less-known cycle, the Hale cycle. This magnetic cycle lasts approximately 22 years, through which the sun’s magnetic field reverses and then reverts to its original state,” Ryan French, a solar astrophysicist, said.
“During solar minimum, the sun’s magnetic field is close to a dipole (偶极子), with one north pole and one south pole, similar to Earth’s magnetic field. But as we shift toward solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic field becomes more complex, without a clear north-south pole separation,” French said. By the time solar maximum passes and solar minimum arrives, the sun has returned to a dipole.
The upcoming switch in polarity will be from the northern to southern magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere. “This will bring it to a similar magnetic orientation to Earth, which also has its southern-pointing magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere,” French explained.
8. How does the author lead in the topic
A. By citing an instance.
B. By showing a difference.
C. By giving an interpretation.
D. By making a comparison
9. What is the relationship between the sun’s magnetic field and the solar cycle
A. Uncertain. B. Close. C. Strange. D. Indifferent.
10. Why did French mention Earth’s magnetic field
A. To make his reasons clear.
B. To make his experiments convincing.
C. To make his prediction accurate.
D. To make his explanation specific.
11. What does the underlined word “orientation” in the last paragraph mean
A. Emergency. B. Direction. C. Response. D. Procedure.
D
Last September, Fernando Trujillo first received frightening news from Brazil’s Lago de Tefé via phone calls from his colleagues and fellow scientists, who were in a state of panic. The uncontrolled 2023 summer had been heating the Amazonia lake to temperatures far beyond anything previously recorded, and as they had feared, something was now happening to the pink river dolphins. “Three dead dolphins,” Trujillo remembers. “Then five dead dolphins. Then 20 dead dolphins. Then 70 dead dolphins, in one day.”
For Trujillo, a Colombian marine biologist and National Geographic explorer who has become a global advocate for river dolphins, the Tefé disaster must be understood as both a tragedy and a much needed lesson in the vulnerability (脆弱性) of these freshwater ambassadors. Over just a few days, 157 dolphins — 10 percent of the lake’s population — died in that overheated water, whose temperature pushed above 102 °F. The exact cause was still under investigation two months later, but heat stress seemed the likeliest explanation.
Trujillo thinks that the sudden attention to the mass deaths may help people grasp other threats — habitat loss, poisoned waters, overfishing and killing — that end anger river dolphins in all 14 countries where they’re found. He has been committed to the work ever since he was a university student. At that time, the respectable oceanographer Jacques Cousteau visited his class. “I asked him what would be important to study. And he said, ‘Dolphins. It was kind of like an order,'” Trujillo says.
As part of the Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition, a series of scientific research projects spanning the Amazon River Basin, Trujillo is also helping coordinate international conservation commitments like the Global Declaration for River Dolphins. “And the main point is that it’s not just about the dolphins,” he says. “It’s about the rivers, and the 1.5 billion people living there. The dolphins, for me, are connecting the general public to all the problems in the region. And the general public is listening.”
12. What is the tone of Trujillo as he recalls in paragraph 1
A. Alarmed. B. Appreciative. C. Carefree. D. Critical.
13. How many pink river dolphins survived in the Amazonia lake according to paragraph 2
A. 157. B. 167. C. 1,413. D. 1,570.
14. What does paragraph 3 mainly say about Trujillo
A. His admiration for Jacques Cousteau.
B. His confusion about Jacques Cousteau’s order.
C. His work highlighting threats to river dolphins.
D. His research identifying threats across 14 countries.
15. What does Trujillo intend to do in the last paragraph
A. Declare his scientific findings.
B Announce his research problems.
C. Win public recognition for his research.
D. Raise people’s environmental awareness.

Mrs.Thompson had lived in the community for decades, with her husband having long passed and her children having grown and moved away. She spent her days wandering about her apartment, her window boxes filled with colorful flowers that she lovingly tended to. Her evenings were spent reading books or watching TV, with the volume turned low so as not to disturb her neighbors. Despite her advancing years, she had bright eyes full of energy and always wore a ready smile.
The Johnsons, on the other hand, were new to the community. They had recently moved in with their young daughter, Emily, who was just learning to walk and talk. The sounds of her laughter and babbling always filled the community, bringing a newfound energy and joy to the community. But sometimes they needed someone to babysit Emily.
At first, the two neighbors interacted politely, exchanging greetings in the hallway or small talk about the weather. But it wasn't until ore fateful day that their relationship deepened in a way that would touch the hearts of everyone in the community.
It was a cold winter afternoon, and the snow was, falling heavily outside. Mrs. Thompson, who hadn't been feeling herself under the weather for a few days, was struggling to get out of bed. She had run out of her medication and was too weak to venture out into the snow to refill it.
Meanwhile, the Johnsons were getting ready to go out fora walk with Emily. As they bundled up (穿得暖和) in their winter gear, they noticed Mrs. Thompson’s door opened halfway and heard a faint cry for help.

A. Emergency. B. Direction. C. Response. D. Procedure.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B

B. Announce his research problems.
C. Win public recognition for his research.
D. Raise people’s environmental awareness.

In the bustling (熙熙攘攘的) heart of the city there was a community where neighbors are not just faces in the hallway but friends and extended family. Among these neighbors, two families stand out: an elderly woman named Mrs.Thompson and a young family with a baby, the Johnsons.
Without hesitation, they rushed in to find the elderly woman lying on the floor, with her face pale and her breathing labored.

【答案】参考范文:
In a panic, Mr. Johnson immediately called for an ambulance. Meanwhile, his wife stayed with Mrs. Thompson, comforting her and trying to keep her calm, while Emily stayed close to her mother's side, with her big eyes with worry. The ambulance arrived soon. The doctors quickly examined Mrs. Thompson, judging that she needed immediate medical attention. Considering her family were far away, the Johnsons accompanied Mrs. Thompson to the hospital, staying with her until her family arrived. Thanks to the timely help of the Johnsons, Mrs. Thompson recovered quickly.
The incident brought the two families closer together than ever before. Mrs. Thompson often babysat Emily when the Johnsons were at work while the young couple helped her with groceries and other chores, and even took care of her when in need. With days going by, they lived together just like an extended family. This heartwarming story spread in the community. Instead of exchanging polite greetings, the neighbors stopped to chat and offer help whenever needed. The series of community grew stronger and they felt more like a home than ever before.
