Once upon a time, there were two neighbors living next to each other. One of them was a retired(退休的) teacher called David and the other was an engineer called Jacob. Both of them planted plants in their gardens.
David gave a little water to his plants and didn’t always give a full attention to them, while Jacob gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them very well.
One day, a storm started suddenly during the night. The next morning, Jacob was surprised to see that his plants were uprooted (将....连根拔起). But David’s plants were very well.
Jacob went to the David’s and asked, “We both grew the same plants together, I actually looked after my plants better than you did to yours, and even gave them more water. Still, my plants were uprooted, while yours were not. How is that possible ”
David smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that, your plants didn’t need to work to find water. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just adequate (适当的) water and let their roots (根) search for more. And their roots went deeper and deeper, which made their position stronger.”

书面表达
How to get rid of excessive dependence on parents
A saying goes: “The flowers in the greenhouse can’t stand the wind and rain.” Children’s excessive dependence on their parents may stop the step of their development and independence. As middle school students, in order to reduce their dependence, the following measures can be taken:
First, when you meet a problem, try to think and solve it yourself at first. Don’t rush to the problem and ask for help immediately. Second, you can help others. Learn to cook and take care of patients when your family member is sick. By helping others, you might realize that you can deal with many things well on your own. Third, it’s necessary for you to make more useful friends and communicate with others. Fourth, read more books and learn life skills from books. Fifth, exercising more helps to keep solving problems by yourself.
In addition, parents need to open their hands, let children fly in the sky! These can reduce the dependence on parents.
