The older you get, the more difficult it is to learn a new language. But no one knows exactly what the cutoff point is—at what age it becomes harder. In one of the largest studies, researchers from Boston-based universities found that children are good at learning a second language up until the age of 18, about 10 years later than earlier thought. But the study also showed that it is best to start by age 10 if you want to achieve the grammatical fluency of a native speaker.
To solve this problem, the research team collected data on a person’s age, language level and time studying English. They created a short online grammar quiz called “Which English ” that tested noun-verb agreement, pronouns, prepositions and relative clauses, among other linguistic elements. They wanted to find out when the “critical period” for achieving the highest levels of grammatical fluency ends.
Based on people’s grammar scores and information about their learning of English, the researchers developed models to find out how long it takes to become fluent in a language and the best age to start learning. They concluded that the ability to learn a new language, at least grammatically, is strongest until the age of 18. To become completely fluent, however, learning should start before the age of 10.
There are three main ideas as to why language-learning ability falls at 18: social changes, interference (干扰) from one’s primary language and continuing brain development. At 18, kids typically graduate from high school and start college or enter the work force full-time. Once they do, they may no longer have the time, opportunity to study a second language. Or it is possible that after one masters a first language, its rules interfere with the ability to learn a second language. Finally, changes in the brain that continue during the late teens and early 20s may somehow make learning harder.
This is not to say that we cannot learn a new language if we are over 20. There are many examples of people who pick up a language later in life.
Although the study was conducted only in English, the researchers believe the findings will transfer to other languages and they are developing similar tests for Spanish and Mandarin.
14. In Paragraph 2, “this problem” refers to ______.
A. at what age people can do the quiz
B. how people improve their language skills
C. why people find it hard to master grammar rules
D. in what period people can learn a new language well
15. Why does people’s language-learning ability fall at 18
A Because they have no good learning environment.
B. Because they are busy developing other life skills.
C. Because they needn’t improve the language ability.
D. Because they focus more on their primary language.
16. Why does the author write the passage
A. To explain a finding. B. To provide a solution.
C. To lead a discussion. D. To support an opinion.
C
For so long, failure has been pictured as something negative, something to be ashamed of and something to be kept a secret. But a Swedish psychologist, Samuel West, has decided to put our worst fears on the table. He is opening a museum -- the Museum of Failure -- in Helsingborg, Sweden, this June.
Instead of showing successes, as museums usually do, the Museum of Failure will display over 60 “failed” products from big-name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola. “I really hope you see that these mega-brands that everybody respects, they screw up too,” West told The New York Times. “I hope that makes you feel less nervous about learning something new.”
West’s opinion isn’t a new one. Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” And this idea has been embraced by lots of companies in the US. Silicon Valley, for example, is the home of some of the world’s most creative companies, yet its slogan turns out to be, quite surprisingly, “Fail fast, fail often.”
However, there are reasons for this. “The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace out-of-the-box thinking, and allow employers to make mistakes and see what happens,” wrote Simon Casuto of Forbes.
But some people are doubtful of this so-called “culture of failure”. They are worried that if failure becomes a “symbol of honor”, as Wired magazine put it, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may push people to care too little and try too little.
“Sometimes people hid behind failure, when they could have prevented it,” wrote Anna Isaac of The Telegraph.
So it’s important that you set apart the two kinds of failure—the kind that makes you a loser and the kind that takes you forward The key is whether you’ve learned something from your mistakes.
“Learning is the only process that turns failure into success.” West said The Guardian.” If you don’t learn from your failures, then you’ve really failed.”
17. What does the underlined phrase “screw up” in the second paragraph mean
A. Make a profit. B. Make a mess.
C. Make a highlight. D. Make a risk.
18. What messages does the slogan “Fail fast, fail often.” convey
A. The more failure, the better.
B. Accept failure, and try new things.
C. The more you fail, the less success you achieve.
D. Failure is more important than success.
19. Which magazine shows doubt about the culture of failure
A. The New York Times. B. Forbes.
C. Wired. D. The Guardian.
20. What’s West’s opinion about failure
A. Failure’s value lies in learning from it.
B. If you fail, you are a loser.
C. It’s not necessary to try to reduce the risk of failure.
D. Failure is the key to put you forward.

Haze Mabry, who has worked as a school keeper for thirteen years, walks into the school building every day and empties garbage cans, wipes down bathrooms and mops wet messes in the hallways.
Last Friday, after he arrived at the school, instead of finding garbage to clean up, he found almost 800 students lining the hallways with handmade cards, blowing noisemakers and singing a full-throated happy birthday to him. It was his 80th birthday. As he walked the long hallway, some popped out of line to hug him. They handed him so many cards that they filled several large boxes. Touched by their enthusiastic expression of affection, Mabry thanked them all. “They’re like my children,” Mabry said.
On a regular day, students at the school sometimes come up to him to say they’re not feeling well or other times to tell him about something that happened at break. He knows most of the kids at the school, but can’t name each one. Some of them make him know them. Like Faith, who often forgets her backpack in the cafeteria, and Lucy, who just wants a hug.
“He won’t brag (夸耀) on himself, but it doesn’t matter what he’s doing or where he is, he will always stop what he’s doing to take care of a child if that child is having a bad day. If a child approaches (接近) him, he will pause to give that child his undivided attention. He’s the most loved one in this building,” said Lori Gilreath, a reading teacher.
Mabry works circles around all the students, cleaning up messes others don’t want to touch. He doesn’t expect a lot. Mabry said he hadn’t planned to do much for his milestone birthday, so he was happy the students had prepared the surprise celebration.
Over the weekend, he worked through the piles of handmade cards at his house. One card from a student stood out to him. It read: “Mr. Haze, you are my sunshine.”

五、书面表达(共29分)
第一节 阅读表达(共3小题;第47、48题各2分,第49题5分,共9分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
46. Why did 800 students line the hallways with handmade cards

47. The writer used the sentences from Lori Gilreath to tell us the reason why Mabry was loved by so many students at the school.

【答案】Dear Jim,
How is everything going Welcome to Beijing. I’m so excited to hear that you are coming to Beijing next month.
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese history and culture, I’d like to recommend the following tourist attractions. First, the Forbidden City is a great place for you. Located in the center of Beijing, it used to be the imperial place of Ming and Qing dynasties with a history of over 600 years. You will have a chance to admire the unique architecture. Besides, I advise you to visit the Great Wall. As one of the wonders in the world, it runs across North China like a huge dragon. It’s said that he who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man. After you reach the top of the mountain, you will be amazed at the beautiful scenery/view. The two sights are considered as must-see attractions. Don’t worry, I will be your guide and take you around Beijing.
I hope you will find these suggestions helpful. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
