My wife and I enjoy a well- built home with a large yard. Our electricity comes from a pole in the street, our water from the city water company, and our natural gas from the natural gas supply company. We live in South Texas, the energy center of the world, so what’s there to worry about
That’s what a lot of people thought until a devastating winter storm hit Texas. Many people were left without water, power or gas. Temperatures inside even the best-built homes were dangerously low. Luckily, our electricity and gas stayed on. Even if they hadn’t, we were prepared for the worst. If we had lost our power and gas, we might have been uncomfortable, but we would have made it through thanks to our active preparation and my self-sufficient(自给自足的)skill set.
My knowledge of getting through that type of situation comes from a lifetime of surviving in difficult environments. I grew up on a farm in Arkansas, where my family was almost totally self- sufficient. Later in life, I lived for three years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where living off the grid(电网)was a normal lifestyle and basic survival skills were a practiced necessity. So, although my wife and I are currently on the grid, I’m familiar with what it takes to live a comfortable lifestyle when the power is cut off.
Perhaps the most important thing you can do to ensure your success living off the grid is to develop an energy-conscious(节能意识的)habit. Living off the grid doesn’t have to be a simple lifestyle like the kind I lived on the farm, but some of the same rules hold true, such as putting an end to using a clothes dryer and planning your wash days around the weather.
4. What does the underlined word “devastating” in paragraph 2mean
A. Demanding. B. Disastrous. C. Delightful. D. Developing.
5. What would the writer do if he lost electricity and gas after the storm
A. Ask the government for help. B. Make active preparations.
C. Improve self- sufficient skills. D. Lead a relatively normal life.
6. How did the writer know about living through bad situations
A. By growing up on a farm. B. By studying from the books.
C. By suffering natural disasters. D. By learning from his experience.
7. What is the best way to live off the grid
A. To pay attention to saving energy. B. To live a simple life.
C. To wash clothes on a rainy day. D. To buy a high- quality clothes dryer.

People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional (地区的) differences in English around the world. They want to increase its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which means “a left-handed person”.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the reaction has been great. Editors are listing a number of suggestions to include in the dictionary. These include Hawaii’s “hammajang”, which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimsuit, “dookers” or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” used by people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED’s editors to identify (确认)regional words. Because the terms are more often spoken than written down.
The project is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include,” said Maier.
8. Which of the following word has been added to OED
A. Agley. B. Frog-drowner. C. Cuddy wifter. D. Catawampous.
9. “Ice-cold” is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. brick B. dookers C. hammajang D. ahoo
10. What can be inferred (推断) from the passage
A. More than 100 countries take part in the project.
B. The OED’s editors are dissatisfied with last year’s revision.
C. It is challenging to recognize the written form of some regional words.
D. It is necessary for English learners to have an Oxford English Dictionary.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. It’s time to find the source of local words.
B. The OED aims to collect new words from locals.
C. The same English words can be used to say different things.
D. The OED will include more regional words from around the globe.

Playing outside can do good to children in many ways. As little as 10 or 15 minutes can support physical and mental (精神的) development.
Generally speaking, children should aim to do 60 minutes of exercise per day. This could be running, climbing, skipping, jumping or kicking a ball at the park. Exercise helps children to stay fit and keep a healthy weight. It strengthens muscles and develops their balance. Exercise is also good for mental health. It gives off endorphins in their brains, which can make them feel happier.
Studies have shown that playing outside can develop children’s motor skills: Gross motor skills are our ability to make large movements with our arms or legs. There are lots of ways to develop gross motor skills outside. For example, running around, walking on the roads which are not smooth or climbing hills. Fine motor skills are our ability to make smaller movements often with our hands. Children can develop these skills by picking up small objects.
While playing outside, children can also build their vocabulary by naming the objects or animals they see around them. Ask your child to describe the view or find shapes in the clouds. Some children may find they’re happier to talk outside. With fewer people around watching or overhearing them, they can be more adventurous with their language.
Moving through new and different places can improve children’s spatial awareness (空间意识) Playing outside often means children have to use their imagination and communication skills. They are likely to have fewer toys outdoors and so have to create their own games. This can increase how much children talk to each other.
So you should think about chances in your daily life for children to spend time outdoors. Explore your local area. Or set up some activities or a family sports day.
12. What does the second paragraph mainly focus on
A. Time needed to do sports. B. Proper places for exercise.
C. Sports suitable for children. D. Advantages of doing exercise.
13. Which of the following is fine motor skill
A. Taking weightlifting exercise. B. Picking up stones on the beach.
C. Walking on the roads with care. D. Playing tennis on the playground.
14. Why do some children feel happy to talk outside
A. Because they have less stress from study. B. Because they like to take more adventures.
C. Because they feel less watched or overheard. D. Because they love animals living in the wild.
15. Who is the text mainly written for
A. Parents. B. Children. C. Teachers. D. Researchers.

As the final exam drew near, I was trying to do some revision for an important oral exam in the local library. However, people kept disturbing me, and I was getting more and more annoyed. Of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate. The last straw was when I heard someone behind me. The singing was so loud that I could even recognize the song! I turned around and glared at the person who was singing. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile on her face. She was standing with a book in her hands near the “English Literature” section. She looked like a literary type and seemed very interested in what she was reading. I glanced at the book’s cover. It was a book of Tennyson’s poems.
The fact that she looked like a sensitive, friendly girl didn’t matter. If anything, it made me even angrily. In fact, I’m surprised there wasn’t steam coming out of my ears!
I picked up my books, glared at her and whispered angrily, “Thanks to your noise. I’ve been unable to study. You’re so selfish!” Then I stormed out of the library with anger. Because I left the library in such a hurry, I left my most important textbook behind. It was only when I got home two hours later that I realized I’d forgotten it and there was nothing I could do as the library was closed. I was so upset that I almost cried.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Moving through new and different places can improve children’s spatial awareness (空间意识). Playing outside often means children have to use their imagination and communication skills. They are likely to have fewer toys outdoors and so have to create their own games. This can increase how much children talk to each other.
So you should think about chances in your daily life for children to spend time outdoors. Explore your local area. Or set up some activities or a family sports day.

【答案】范文
Just then, the phone rang, and I answered it. And a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After confirming that I was, Jenny said that she had noticed I’d left my book in the library and as my name was in it, she’d asked a librarian to get my phone number from their files. She said that she didn’t live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it.
I sighed with relief and agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road. The moment I saw Jenny, I was shocked as if rooted to the spot/my jaw dropped to the ground. Just as you could guess, she was the girl I had shouted at for singing. I was filled with shame and apologized several times for my rude behavior. I felt so guilty, but Jenny just laughed and forgave me, relieving my embarrassment in a gentle voice. Hearing her considerate words, I nodded firmly, knowing kindness and friendship bloom in both of our hearts. Till now, she has been my best friend I can trust and count on.
