When I started my faculty position(教师职位), I was excited to be leading my own lab- and nervous. I’m deaf and rely on lip- reading for verbal communication. I had managed fine as a postdoc(博士后), though not without challenges. But leading a team was different. I had no idea whether I would be able to communicate effectively with my lab members. My pronunciation is sometimes off because of my disability, which leads some people to believe that I lack intelligence.
But after almost 2 years in the position, I’ ve come up with a set of solutions to help me out. In addition to regular one- on- one meetings with my students, I decided to have each student work with me for entire days in the lab when they first join my group. That way, they can see what I’m doing and ask questions as we go along. And time with the students allows me to carefully explain the principle behind each experimental step.
I also established written communication as the most important way to exchange information. Through instant messaging services, I can quickly reach out to my students and share ideas, materials and links. Before they get going with any experiment, I ask them to write a detailed protocol(实验计划) as well, which has allowed me to double- check whenever I spot something that I must have missed during our verbal discussions.
At first, I feared my students would feel that writing out all of their experimental design steps and data analysis plans was unnecessary. But they’ve told me this step allows them to deepen their understanding of the project before starting experiments.
I’m still early in my faculty career, but I feel these strategies are working well for me. I no longer worry that I’m missing important information. And I’ve been able to guide students in a way that would have been difficult for me to do through verbal communication alone. Looking back, I wish I’d followed these strategies earlier in my career.
4. What was the author’s concern at the beginning of his faculty position

5. Which of the following shows the author’s efforts to improve his teaching effect
A. Encouraging communication in various ways.
B. Strengthening students’ interest in science.
C. Connecting students whenever possible.
D. Asking students to learn lip- reading.
6. What was the result of the students’ writing down protocols
A. It practiced their writing skills.
B. It slowed down the project process.
C It benefited both the author and the students.
D. It inspired them to come up with new ideas.
7. What is the author’s tone(语气) at the end of the text
A. Surprised. B. Confident. C. Regretful. D. Anxious.
C
Many of the technologies we use today were first presented in science fiction. In Star Trek, the folks regularly send themselves to and from distant sites. The process appears to break down people’s bodies into their basic parts, and then stream them to some destination where they regroup perfectly. That type of teleportation (瞬间移动) is a long way off, scientists say. Fortunately, another type — virtual teleportation is already here.
Recently, NASA sent one of its doctors, Josef Schmid, to the International Space Station (ISS) to give an astronaut a virtual medical examination. The space agency used a technique which combines holography (全息摄影术) with extended reality (XR). The headset had an entire holographic computer inside. A motion-sensing camera used advanced sensors to get high-quality 3-D “models” of the team to be “transported”. Those data were then sent live to the ISS.
Schmid is a NASA flight doctor, taking care of astronauts and their families. But for his visit to the ISS, he never left Earth. NASA projected him and other members of the team up there as a 3-D hologram. The astronauts could see the virtual visitors and communicate with them in real time.
“We knew we were connected when the crew member wearing the headset said, ‘Whoa!’” recalls Schmid. “We were floating in front of him as if we were there.” But Schmid and the others remained at NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston. “It was like I was on the ISS,” Schmid recalls. The imagery wasn’t flawless. There were pixelation (像素) issues. And sometimes the linkup turned unreliable. But for Schmid, it felt like looking into the future.
While “on” the ISS, he showed how to do a knee medical examination on astronaut Thomas Pesquet. Then he virtually shook Thomas’ hand. Schmid hopes NASA will use two motion-sensing cameras. That way, people in both places — on Earth and in space — can be “present” in each other’s spaces as holograms, allowing them to feel closer and more interactive. He looks forward to such house calls. Or in this case, maybe they’d be “space calls”
8. What does the author intend to show with the example of Star Trek
A. Technology is growing at high rates. B. Many scientists are science fiction fans.
C. Science fiction creates many classic characters. D. Science fiction inspires technological advances.
9. How did Schmid carry out medical tests on the astronauts
A. By referring to their holographic data.
B. By talking with them as a 3-D hologram.
C. By checking the 3-D images of their body.
D. By making regular space trips.
10. What does the underlined word “flawless” in the fourth paragraph mean
A. Realistic. B. Timely. C. Detailed. D. Perfect.
11. Why did Schmid suggest using two motion-sensing cameras
A. To promote interactions. B. To improve work efficiency.
C To look after more astronauts. D. To add fun to his work.
