Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.
4. What is mainly talked about in Para.1
A. Peng’s regrets about his life.
B. Peng’s unique personality.
C. Peng’s unfulfilled dreams.
D. Peng’s great contributions.
5. How did Peng decide when he faced a turn ng point in 1956
A. Following his future development prospects.
B. Following his personal interests.
C. Following the needs of his motherland.
D. Following the economic interests.
6. What is the correct sequence (顺序) of the following events in Peng’s life
①Major in chemical machinery in the Soviet Union.
②Take charge of the construction of nuclear power plants.
③Be awarded “Role Model of the Times”.
④Be elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
A. ①②③④ B. ①②④③ C. ①③②④ D. ③①②④
7. What can we learn about Peng’s life
A. Peng played a key role in China’s nuclear power.
B. Peng had no plan to oversee a nuclear power plant.
C. It was very difficult for Peng to change his major.
D. Peng’s career spanned over nine decades.

The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people — those aged 60 years or older — is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the world. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers who can provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the United States.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction, limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot ”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with deformable (可变形的) bodies or the ability to reshape themselves when touched, but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home.
However, Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3-D printer.
The design process has three steps. First, a user makes a computer-aided design file with the shape of the robot. The user then paints the file to show which directions the different joints of the soft robot will move. It takes the computer a few seconds to change the computer-aided design model into a 3-D soft machine that can be printed using any 3-D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans. Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez.
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to the market.
8. Why does the market urgently need caregiving robots
A. The basic needs of the nursing homes.
B. The results of advanced technology.
C. The rapid increase in the global aging population.
D. The continuous decrease in birth rate.
9. What makes it difficult for people to accept caregiving robots
A. They can’t communicate with the patients freely.
B. They can’t offer convincing physical interaction.
C. They can’t update the service in a timely manner.
D. They can’t truly empathize with the old patients.
10. How to evaluate Martinez’s new design method
A. It allows the computer to fully automate the robot production.
B. It requires a specific 3-D printer to print out a soft robot.
C. It takes a long time to print a soft robot with a 3-D printer.
D. It makes the production of soft robots easier to operate.
11. What is the most important thing for the researchers to do now
A. Ensure the technology is widely accepted and applied.
B. Train more users to earn money for further research.
C. Ask the manufacturers to produce a variety of products.
D. Investigate the market preferences to guide future development.

The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial (冰川的) activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier declined, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged (锯齿状的) coastline of Maine keeps watching over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert was very nearly farmed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbor has become a new art community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
12. What was the result of glacier movement during the Ice Age
A. The coastline was significantly shortened.
B. Parts of the mountains became islands.
C. The sea level rose to a very high level.
D. More new coastal cities emerged.
13 What does the underlined word mean in Para.1
A. Exceeded in height. B. Appeared suddenly.
C. Floated long-term. D. Discovered finally.
14. What can we know about Mt. Desert
A. It was the narrowest island in the world.
B. It is divided into two parts by a sound.
C. It is home to a lot of art communities.
D. It was formed due to the “drowned coastline”.
15. What can NOT be seen in Acadia National Park
A Various plants and animals. B. A quantity of birds.
C. Many famous celebrities. D. Uninhabited forest.

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather, with his patient eyes and gentle hands, was the one who guided me through this journey. As I nervously mounted the bike, everything seemed to go awry. My heart pounded in my chest, and I didn’t know where to place my feet or how to keep the bike upright. But my grandfather, with his calming voice, told me to simply put my feet on the pedals and start cycling. He promised to hold onto the back of the bike, giving me a sense of security.
However, as soon as I began to find my balance, I felt a sudden lightness and realized he had let go. Panic surged through me as I glanced back, seeing nothing but empty space where his supporting hand should be. Fear gripped me, and my mind went blank. I forgot how to use the brakes and, in a moment of panic, fell right off the bike.
Tears streamed down my face as I lay there, feeling defeated. But my grandfather, with his endless encouragement, urged me to get up and try again. After a few moments of sobbing, I wiped away my tears, took a deep breath, and climbed back onto the bike.
This time, I was more determined than ever. I focused on keeping my balance, remembering the tips my grandfather had given me. But just as I thought I was making progress, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face, hitting my nose hard.
My grandfather, seeing my distress (痛苦), decided to call it a day. We took a break, and he promised we would try again the next morning. As I lay in bed that night, my nose still throbbing, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of frustration and anticipation. I was frustrated that I hadn’t mastered the bike yet, but I was also eager to try again, to prove to myself that I could do it.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

13. What does the underlined word mean in Para.1
A. Exceeded in height. B. Appeared suddenly.
C. Floated long-term. D. Discovered finally.
14. What can we know about Mt. Desert
A. It was the narrowest island in the world.
B. It is divided into two parts by a sound.
C. It is home to a lot of art communities.
D. It was formed due to the “drowned coastline”.
15. What can NOT be seen in Acadia National Park
A. Various plants and animals.

【答案】The next morning I woke up bright and early, my nose feeling a little better and my determination renewed. The sky was just beginning to lighten, and I could hear birds chirping outside. After a quick breakfast, I rushed out to meet my grandfather in the yard. This time, I felt more prepared. We started with simple balancing exercises, and gradually moved on to practicing starts and stops. Every small success boosted my confidence, and I could feel myself getting closer to riding on my own.
The wind rushed through my hair, and I felt a sense of freedom and accomplishment that I had never felt before. Suddenly, I realized that I was cycling around the yard without any help from my grandfather. The fear from the previous day vanished, replaced by pure joy and excitement. I stopped near him, grinning from ear to ear. “You did it!” he said, proud and happy. That day, I not only learned to ride a bike but also understood the power of perseverance.
