Heritage sites are universally considered as the places where you can learn about the history of human development and social evolution. Therefore, if you have a keen interest in meeting your curiosity about it, the following on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List will be a must-check list for you.
Dinosaur Provincial Park, Canada
The park is best known for its extensive fossil beds, within which 35 species of dinosaurs from about 100 to 65 million years ago have been identified. There are also fossilized remains of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
Salonga National Park, Congo
This is the largest reserve in Congo, covering more than 14,000 square miles. The park was established in 1970. The thick forest provides habitats for various animals like parrots, elephants and monkeys. Park visitors observe the animals from motorized river boats. The park was entered into the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1984.
Hadrian’s Wall, England
This is a Roman barrier that guarded the border of Britain. Hadrian (ruled 117-138 CE) went to Britain in 122 and was the first to build a wall, 80 miles long, to separate the Romans from the barbarians (野蛮人). There was no intention of fighting from the wall top; the soldiers there were trained to encounter the enemy in the open. In 1987, Hadrian’s Wall was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
Easter Island, Chile
This place is famous for its huge stone statues. The first European visitors, the Dutch, named it Easter Island in memory of their day of arrival. The small and hilly island was formed by volcanoes. Easter Island was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1995.

I have a strong faith that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38,000 runners who participated in the marathon (马拉松赛跑), the largest event of its kind in Asia.
My decision to participate in the marathon was because of the insistence of my wife, who had run the half-marathon previously. This year, she wanted me to participate along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got rejected while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a daunting task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and hunted and literally spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I preserved, thinking that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find that were as comfortable as my old ones.
Finally, on 16th January 2011, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.
Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life — largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
4. Why did the writer participate in the marathon at first
A. It was the largest event of its kind.
B. He had run the half-marathon previously.
C. His wife insisted on him participating.
D. He had been training for a long time.
5. What can we learn from the text
A. The writer was the best among all the runners.
B. The writer tried his best to do some marathon training.
C. The writer’s fitness training before was only a little help to him in the run.
D. The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
6. The writer says completing a marathon is like “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” because_______.
A. self-confidence is the primary factor in a marathon.
B. to win a marathon depends on your mind, not on your shoes
C. it would be easy if you made up your mind to begin it
D. belief can bring you success in a marathon
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. Practice Makes Perfect. B. Insist on Your Decision
C. The Pain before Success D. A Running Lesson

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot (智能聊天程序) from OpenAI, an AI technology company In San Francisco. It can produce any kind of writing as required. Many schools are afraid that ChatGPT could result in dishonesty and harm learning. So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI programs.
OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. The method for detecting AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of that,” he added, “it shouldn’t be only relied upon when making decisions.”
Teenagers and college students were among the millions of people who began experimenting with ChatGPT after it was put into use on November 30. The tool is a free service on OpenAI’s website. Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat.
So far public schools in some cities, such as New York City and Los Angeles, began to block (阻止) its use in classrooms and on school computers. Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. “We can’t afford to ignore (忽视) it,” Robinson said. Students could also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework, Robinson said.
OpenAI talked about its new tool on a blog recently. But the company added that the tool could help to find some mistakes in writing as well as catch cheating. The longer a piece of writing is, the better the tool is at deciding whether an AI system or a human wrote something.
8. Who are more likely to use AI Text Classifier
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Writers.
9. What is Leike’s attitude towards AI Text Classifier
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned C. Cautious D. Satisfied
10. Why are some teachers worried about ChatGPT
A. It costs the users a lot of money. B. It often makes wrong decisions.
C. They can’t use it as a teaching tool. D. Students will take advantage of it to cheat.
11. What can we learn from the example of ChatGPT
A. Every coin has its two sides. B. Rome was not built in one day.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. A bit is better than nothing.
D
Children who spent more than two hours per day in front of a television or computer screen were more likely to report behavioral and social problems than kids who watched less, according to a University of Bristol study that will be published in Pediatrics.
Researchers recorded the playing, screen viewing and activity habits of 1,000 children aged 10 to 11. They also had the kids fill out questionnaires designed to estimate the kids’ emotional well-being and behavior.
The questionnaires contained 20 questions covering five sections—emotional difficulties, conduct problems, hyperactivity (活动过度), inattention, friendship and peer groups and problems relating to friends and peer groups.
The study found that those children who spent more than two hours per day watching TV or using a computer were at an increased risk of psychological difficulties. This risk increased if they also failed to meet the guidelines on physical activity.
While the risks for kids who spent a lot of time in front of a screen appeared to be increased by lack of physical activity, the opposite was not true: Increase in physical activity did not seem to decrease kids’ high scores in psychological difficulties if they spent a lot of time sedentary (久坐 的) in front of a screen. By contrast, sedentary time spent reading a book or working on a project corresponded to the highest scores of psychological well-being.
“While low levels of screen viewing may not be problematic, we cannot rely on physical activity to compensate for long hours of screen viewing,” lead author Dr. Angie Page said in a statement. “Watching TV or playing computer games for more than two hours a day is related to greater psychological difficulties regardless of how active children are.”
Although Page’s study doesn’t clarify the links between inactivity, screen time and psychological well-being, it’s true that kids in the United States are getting less exercise and more screen time than they should. In 2009, Page’s team found a connection between a child’s physical activity and independent mobility, the amount of space in which a child can play without the supervision of an adult. They concluded that, as play spaces have decreased in recent decades, childhood inactivity-and perhaps screen time—has increased.
12. What information can we get about the University of Bristol study
A. It was done by an elementary school.
B. The results of it have been published.
C. All the kids studied had to fill out questionnaires.
D. The questionnaires of it contained five questions.
13. The researchers’ purpose of letting the kids fill out questionnaires was to________.
A. make a judgment about the kids’ behavior and how healthy they were emotionally
B. estimate the average time kids spent in front of a screen
C. infer whether the kids have psychological problems or not
D. get information about the psychological activity kids like
14. Why do more kids lack physical activities according to Page’s team
A. More electronic products have poured into their world.
B. They have too much homework to do.
C. They have fewer spaces to play in.
D. They lack the supervision of their parents.
15. What does the passage mainly discuss
A. A study shows more screen time and inactivity increase kids’ risks of psychological difficulties.
B. A study clarifies the links between inactivity, screen time and psychological well-being.
C. A study illustrates why childhood inactivity and screen time have increased.
D. A study demonstrates how to limit children’s TV and screen time at home.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with many physical issues affecting her tiny body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. Though no one expected her to survive, she did make it. But she had a strange figure that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
In Emily’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school hall at Christmas. It had been performed for so many years that it had become one of the most important events for many of the townsfolk. Each year, many people tried out for the show, but most were turned down. Only the best performers could be included.
Emily had a most beautiful singing voice. Last year, she asked Mrs. Owens, her music teacher, if she could join in the performance. Mrs. Owens took a look at her body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable too.”
Without singing a single note, Mrs. Owens sent Emily back through the door of the choral room (合唱室). Hurt and upset, Emily decided never to try out again. But things changed as the following school year, Mrs. Owens retired and a new music teacher arrived—Mr. Butler.
He had heard about Emily and suggested that she give it a try again. Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. But finally her love for singing and strong desire to join in the performance outweighed her hesitation. She tried out again and learnt the result would be posted the next day on the door of the choral room.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night, having turned in bed back and forth thousand times as she was worried that she would be rejected again and would never fit in.
Paragraph 1:
The nex tday, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the result.

【答案】Dear Jack
I am sorry to learn that, as a result of great study stress, you had an argument with your parents, which has resulted in a family tension. Don’t be too concerned about it because it is not uncommon that teenagers are at a loss how to get along well with their parents. Getting along well with your parents, as we know, is great important. Please take my suggestions into account.
First, understand and show respect to your parents, because the more you understand them, the better you will get along with each other, which benefits your growth as a teenager. Second, have a heart-to-heart chat with your parents and put yourself in other’s shoes.
I sincerely hope my suggestions above are helpful to you and you can have a good relationship with your parents.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
The next day, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the result. To her great surprise, she was not rejected this time. Her name stood proudly at the top of the list. It was she, Emily White, who was chosen to be the lead singer! Emily couldn’t believe her eyes. Just then, she felt a gentle pat on the shoulder. Mr. Butler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I chose you to lead because of your extraordinary voice. Just believe in yourself.” Greatly moved and encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of the performance came. Standing in the front, Emily felt her throat tight and palms sweating. When the curtain rose, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon her. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. With Mr. Butler’s encouraging words in mind, she began to sing her heart out—her voice travelled in the hall like a nightingale’s singing. Everyone was shocked by her great talent and offered big rounds of applause. She was shining on stage—she knew now she was known to everyone not for her appearance, but for her voice as an angel’s.
