A 15m sperm whale (抹香鲸) beached itself in shallow (浅的) waters over the weekend because of ill health. Beachgoers were excited about the giant whale swimming so close to the shore, with many filming the experience as swimmers went right up to it to take a closer look. One person said the whale looked “happy” as it came close to the shore before moving back to deeper water. While local swimmers were excited to see the whale, they risked their own safety and could have made the whale feel upset and anxious by swimming so close to it.
“I think it’s protecting itself from any hunters, positioning itself in a way that we might expect in an animal who’s not well and needs to rest,” said Mark Cugley, who studies whales. “It became grounded on shallow sandbars, and it would swim off again. Then it would get grounded again. That’s why we need to fully assess (评估) its health.” Mr. Cugley said experts had examined the whale and it appeared to be unwell.
Sperm whales usually live far offshore and hardly ever come into shallow water. Lone whales often beach themselves when they are sick, injured or old and are looking for shallow waters to rest, according to whales. org. But without deep water to support their weight, whales can become badly injured inside their bodies and could die at sea if humans attempted to rescue them by moving them back into deeper waters.
Authorities were deciding on the best way to kill the animal humanely in the coming days, if need be, in line with requirements of the International Whaling Convention. In the meantime, authorities would continue to pour water on the whale to keep it wet and comfortable and stop it getting hurt from the summer sun.

A shocking eruption has ended Iceland’s lengthy volcano warning as a flash of light burst across the evening sky and the lava (岩浆) flowed out quickly in a breathtaking show of the Earth’s power. But the eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50km southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, wasn’t expected to give out large amounts of ash (灰尘) into the air.
By early Tuesday afternoon, the size of the volcanic eruption continued to diminish. The lava flow, which reached as high as 30m, was also falling and was a quarter of what it was at the time of the eruption.
The November evacuation meant few people were near the site of the eruption and authorities had warned others to stay away. Nonetheless, residents of the evacuated fishing community had mixed emotions as they watched orange flames touch the dark sky. More than a month after the evacuation, many were still living in temporary (临时的) accommodations and did not expect to ever be able to return to live in their homes. “The town might end up under the lava,” said Ael Kermarec, a tourist. “It’s amazing to see, but there’s kind of a bittersweet feeling at the moment.”
University of Bristol Professor Matthew Watson said that the eruption was expected to continue getting weak, but he had no idea how long it could last. “Residents should strictly follow travel advice because new eruptions can quickly put people in harm’s way. This style of eruption is among the most impressive ever seen, and there will be a strong pull for tourists and locals,” Watson said. “It’s just something from a movie.”
Residents were evacuated and a state of emergency was announced in Iceland more than a month ago. However, the uneasy waiting game still continues.
28. Which of the following best explains “diminish” underlined in paragraph 2
A. Keep growing. B. Be destroyed.
C. Get dangerous. D. Become smaller.
29. What did Kermarec want to say
A. He couldn’t see the breathtaking show. B. He forgot to share the feeling online.
C. He was worried about the town. D. He wasn’t ready for a new life.
30. What can we infer about the eruption from Watson’s words
A. It may draw people to the site. B. It will threaten wildlife.
C. It attracts many movie lovers. D. It drives tourists to leave.
31. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. Playing games is an approach to killing time.
B. It will be a long time before the disaster ends.
C. Local residents will return home in one month.
D. Authorities should announce a warning early.
D
Two authors, Kylen Ribeiro and Michelle Zofrea, have written a children’s book Henry’s Tech-Free Trip to explore why parents want kids to limit screen time.
The authors said they have seen many news stories and studies in recent years warning parents about monitoring (监视) both the quality of the content and the amount of time their kids spent with tablets, phones and smart watches. But they didn’t see any books that were written for kids on the topic.
“We hope that it will help kids connect the topic,” Zofrea said. She said it reminded her that her mother warned her not to overdo it on Halloween candy. She didn’t follow the advice and wolfed down all her treat and felt sick later. “Like with food, we can set rules and lecture kids. It’ll be more effective if they start to notice how they feel,” Zofrea said.
The authors both work for DefenderShield, a Tampa-based company that sells products to block electromagnetic field radiation (电磁辐射) from laptops, cell phones and tablets. Their work there is what inspired the book, though they know it can be a heated topic because of the debate over the science of radiation’s effects.
While concerns are rising about the amount of time kids spend online, parents always remain on their phones at home. “I’ve always said children learn from what we do and not what we say,” said Pam Patranella, a doctor who reviewed the book and liked the idea of taking the screen time lesson to kids.
The book’s authors said parents need to be reminded that their kids have grown up in a different world, one that has had computers and tablets since the day they were born. “We want to bring up the concept (观念) of digital wellness for families and children,” Ribeiro said.
32. Why did Zofrea mention Halloween candy
A. To express thanks to her mother. B. To explain that awareness matters.
C. To tell kids to have sugar-free food. D. To show the meaning of the festival
33. The fourth paragraph of the text is mainly about ________.
A. what may catch people’s attention online
B. what inspires scientists to design phones
C. what radiation’s effects mean for children
D. what leads the authors to write the book
34. What does Patranella probably advise parents to do
A. Put effort into reading. B. Pick up phones at home.
C. Act as a role model. D. Talk to kids patiently.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Kids’ Screen Time B. A Connected World
C. Parents’ Concept D. A Digital Course

I always think of my mother as a superhero, because she never runs out of room in her heart for anyone or anything.
I could write about all of the wonderful things she has done, but I want to focus on one project she does every year that has shaped my whole family and everyone around us: She saves money, and she puts it in a little jar (罐子) that we refer to as “The Charity Jar”. Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something—an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. If you ask anyone else who knows her, however, they will tell you that she has a huge heart. She manages to get our whole family involved (参与) in this movement every year. Last year, she helped an organization where I volunteered—Ruth’s Place—a homeless women’s shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
I had been helping a professor run a writing workshop in the shelter when I noticed the wish list on the wall: warm clothes, a coffee maker and supplies. I told my mom, and within a day, she had already asked if our family wanted to help Ruth’s Place. We all agreed and decided that the coffee maker and supplies would be the best things for our family to work on together.
A few days later, Mom found a coffee maker online, and showed it to us. With a few clicks, it was on its way. She also baked(烘焙) fresh chocolate cupcakes for the women in the shelter. We gathered the rest of the supplies and called the shelter to find a day when we could deliver them.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
That day I drove my mom to the shelter very slowly. _______________________________________________________________________

She didn’t follow the advice and wolfed down all her treat and felt sick later. ‘Like with food, we can set rules and lecture kids. It’ll be more effective if they start to notice how they feel,’ Zofrea said.(她说,这提醒了她,她的母亲警告她不要在万圣节吃太多糖果。

空格前的句子“A full holiday schedule of gatherings and celebrations can make staying fit seem much more difficult.(一个满是聚会和庆祝活动的假期安排会让保持健康看起来更加困难。)”
空格后的句子“Dalleck suggests getting up for just five minutes every 30 to 60 minutes and performing light activity.(达勒克建议每隔30到60分钟站起来5分钟,做一些轻微的活动。)”

He also recommends getting plenty of rest and maintaining lists to stay organized and stress-free.(这样你就不会在一天的晚些时候被聚会或其他事件分散注意力。
根据空格前的句子““In fact, there is more than just one way to live healthfully and be active,” says Jessica Matthews, a professor in the College of Health Sciences in San Diego.(圣地亚哥健康科学学院教授杰西卡·马修斯说:“事实上,健康生活和活跃的方式不止一种。”)”

That day I drove my mom to the shelter very slowly. The anticipation of the women’s reactions to our gifts filled the car with a sense of warmth and purpose. As we arrived at the shelter, we were greeted by the grateful faces of the women. My mom, with her usual grace and humility, began to distribute the supplies we had brought. The coffee maker was received with cheers of joy, and the sight of fresh, homemade cupcakes brought smiles to their faces.
As we left, we were met with heartfelt thanks. The women at the shelter expressed their gratitude with warm hugs and words of appreciation. Their smiles were the best reward we could have asked for. As we drove away, my mom looked at me with a satisfied smile on her face. That day, I learned more than ever about the power of kindness and the difference one person can make. I realized that my mom, with her Charity Jar, was not just a superhero to me, but to everyone she touched with her acts of kindness.
