A TV program was being videoed. Tonight it was to select the sweetest whisper of love ever said between husband and wife.
The final competition was held among 10 married couples. Seven of them were young ones; two middle-aged and one old. The last turn came to the old couple. The old lady took the microphone and said the sweetest whisper of love she has ever heard was: “Are you standing or sitting ”The host fixed his eyes on her, quite puzzled by her remarks.
Regardless of all the talking around, she went on with her story. Her husband has been a doctor before he retired. One day when he was on duty at the hospital, he felt a sharp pain at the heart. By his professional knowledge he knew immediately he suffered a fit of heart attack. His colleagues carried him at once to the operation room and prepared him for a by-pass operation, which was highly risky. The patient’s family members had to be informed before it began. The patient himself was allowed to put in a word. Lying silently on the operation table with a trembling hand, he dialed after a moment’s thinking the number of his wife’s phone. Finally a familiar voice came from the other end…
“So many years had passed but memory of this incident remained fresh in my mind. What he said in the beginning was: ‘Are you standing or sitting ’ He was actually worried about me, wondering how I felt at the news. He was afraid I would have fallen flat onto the ground. In such a critical(危急的)state as he was then, his thought still went to me…” The old lady concluded slowly, “That’s the sweetest whisper of love I’ve ever heard all my life.”
A loud applause followed in the wake of a short silence.

Everyone knows there are many English expressions about clothes. There is no need to keep it a secret, or keep it under your hat. In fact, if I keep talking, soon enough you will start to think I am an old hat about this—a real expert. Do not be fooled, though. My friends sometimes call me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This is someone who acts like a good person, but is really a bad person.
It is always fun to get dressed up. I look great in my best clothes. When I put them on, I feel decked out. In fact, my husband says I look dressed to kill. Of course, I would never kill anyone. But, there is something special about putting on clothes that are pleasing to the eye.
My best clothes are not modern or fashionable. But I really do not care. They certainly look better on me than my birthday suit. Did you know that everyone has a birthday suit You wear it when you are wearing no clothes at all.
I am very careful with my clothes. I handle them with kid gloves. I try not to get them dirty or torn. Most of my clothes fit like a glove. They fit perfectly.
Some of the clothes I like best are hand-me-downs. My older sister gave them to me when she no longer wanted them. Hand-me-downs are great because clothes often cost too much money. I live on a shoestring. I have a very small budget and little money to spend on clothes.
I dream that someday I will be able to live like a rich person. I will know what it is like to walk in another person’s shoes. Some of my friends got rich by riding someone else’s coat tails. They are successful today as a result of someone else being successful. But, I believe you should never criticize others for something you would do yourself. What is said about someone else can also be said about you. Remember, if the shoe fits, wear it.

D.When I wear my best clothes I like to kill someone.
12.What’s the meaning of the underlined word in the fifth paragraph
A.Well-off. B.Badly-off. C.Cruel. D.Honest.

Teenagers who sit down to family meals are less likely to be depressed or take risks with drugs and alcohol, new research shows.
A new study looking at the role of family meals in the health and wellbeing of young people is the first study on the issue in New Zealand. It uses data collected nationally from more than 9,000 secondary school pupils. It finds that those who eat with their families frequently are less likely to report suicidal(自杀的)thoughts, less likely to be smokers and less likely to indulge in drinking, drugs and so on. It says social changes such as more television channels, more mothers working and cheap fast food have changed the status of the family meal.
However, the good news for New Zealand is that one-third of young people reported sharing meals with their families seven or more times a week and an additional 40 percent shared meals three to six times a week.
Author Jennifer Utter, a senior lecturer at Auckland University, said sitting down for dinner created an opportunity for parents to check in with children and see how their day had been. Young people who ate with their parents reported better connectedness and better communication. Family meals indicate strong, healthy relationships. The high proportion of families eating together was encouraging, she said. “A lot of families do seem to want to spend time together. It’s a really positive finding.”
Previously a household would have only one breadwinner and there would always be someone at home for children to talk to. Nowadays, it often took the income of two people to keep the family afloat(能维持下去)and it would be harder for parents to have dinner with their children. Chief families commissioner Carl Davidson said teens who ate meals with their families reported better health, and were less likely to be depressed. “We probably all know that eating together is worthwhile, but this research shows that those shared meals aren’t just nice to have but are actually a fundamental contributor to family wellbeing.”
13. Why is it more difficult for parents to have dinner with their children
A. Because children are busy with their study.
B. Because eating as family can make them put on weight.
C. Because the meals cooked at home are not as delicious as fast food.
D. Because parents have to earn money to support the whole family.
14. What do the underlined words “indulge in” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. be tired of B. be fit for C. be addicted to D. be content with
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Eating as family aids teens’ health. B. Eating as family helps teens lose weight.
C. Eating as family saves much energy. D. Eating as family benefits parents.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
Dear Mike,
I am very glad to get an opportunity to study in a Senior High School as an exchange student in London this September. As far as I’m concerned, I wish my perfect school would be in the center of the city. It had better be located near a library so that we can go there conveniently to read or search for some helpful information. All the classrooms are equipped with computers, with the help of which teachers can make classes lively and interesting through the Internet. The school should have a language lab where we could have our English classes. As well as the basic courses we must take, there should be some new and interesting optional subjects for students to choose from, which can develop our varied interest. I like sports very much. I wish there would be colorful after-school activities, such as art, photography and sports so that we could relax ourselves when we are tired from our studies.
Such is the perfect school in my mind. How I wish my dream could come true!
Yours Truly
Li Hua
