I’ve been interested in languages for as long as I can remember. My dad was a language genius. My family traveled widely when I was a child, and my dad would talk to everyone we met with ease. His abilities greatly impressed me. I wished then that I would someday be able to speak as many languages as he had been able to.
I wasn’t a natural language learner. When I was 11 years old, I made slow progress with French at school and almost gave it up. After I entered college, I read many German writers in translation. I loved them so much that I wanted to read them in their native tongue. This desire drove me to pick up German. Once I had mastered German, I found myself in love with languages. Since then, I have never stopped learning new languages. By my late twenties, I was able to speak French, Latin and Greek.
I’m often asked what my secret is. The answer is, predictably, endless hours of reading and studying. Before I got married, I would spend 16 hours every day studying languages. I used to like walking fast outdoors while listening to a recording of language and repeating it out loud.
Now, I can read about 40 languages and speak most of them fluently. Asian languages are more difficult to master. It took me almost ten years to get my Korean skills close to native level. I live in Singapore now. At home, I speak French with my sons. If my Korean wife is there, we’ll use English. When we don’t want the kids to understand our conversations, we use Korean.
I’ve studied Esperanto (世界语). Though I can see the benefits of a world language, I think the world would be a less interesting place if there were only one language. It would be like visiting a garden where there was only one type of plant!

A. walking fast outdoors B. chatting with native speakers

Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.
12. In the author’s view, the biggest difference between high school and middle school is ________.
A. different relationships B. the higher pressure
C high academic achievement D. the higher expectations
13. Which of the following suggestion is not mentioned in the text
A. Careful schedules. B. Healthy relationships.
C. Reinventing yourself. D. Using network information.
14. Who is the article written for
A. Students in junior school. B. Teachers in high school.
C. Parents of high school students. D. Students in senior high school.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. How to Get Through the Transition of Freshman Year of High School
B. How to Become an Active Learner in High School
C What to Prepare to Keep up with Everything in High School
D. How to Meet Your Teacher’s High Expectations

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语编写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse(冲动) I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name, I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
"Yes, “she said in surprise, with extreme excitement." It was my umbrella which had been stolen a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead, Her happiness at retrieving(找回)this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I can only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by misery.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus.

Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.

【答案】Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard man talking heartily to her and went to the door, He was a delivery man, and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake, " I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn't know what to do. Later, Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note, which read "Thanks for returning of the umbrella. Merry Christmas! ""It was sent by the lady. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body. On that cold Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in happiness. A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again.
