As long as she can remember, Khadijah has floated from shelters to parks to motel s along the West Coast with her mother, never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. She has attended 12 schools in 12 years. She was used to the teasing of students at a dozen schools who labeled her as “different”. “I have felt the anger at having to catch up in school... I was bullied because they knew I was poor, different, and read too much,” she wrote in her college essays.
However, academics proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. Khadijah was in third grade when she first realized the power of test scores, placing in the 99th percentile on a state exam — that is, only 1% of students across the country tested better than she did. Her teachers marked the 9-year-old as gifted, a special category that Khadijah, even at that early age, promised to keep. “I still remember that exact number,” Khadijah said.
And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to stay put, regardless of where her mother moved. Graduation was not far off and she needed strong college letters of recommendation from teachers who were familiar with her work. This decision meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a.m. and not getting home until 11 p.m. She kept her grade-point average at just below a 4.0 while participating in the Academic Decathlon (十项全能), the debate team and leading the school’s track and field team.
Her hard work paid off when she poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application — and was accepted. Now a successful student at Harvard, Khadijah continues to use the lessons of her extraordinary life to help and inspire other students.
4. What did some of Khadijah’s classmates think of her
A. She was optimistic. B. She was distinctive.
C. She was distinguished. D. She was considerate.
5. What helped Khadijah to gain confidence
A. Her teacher paid special attention to her.
B. She was marked by her classmates as gifted.
C. She received recognition for her debating skills.
D. Her score was better than 99% of others on a national test.
6. Why did Khadijah determine to stay at Jefferson High School
A. She had to stay where her mother moved.
B. She was tired of keep moving from place to place.
C. She wanted to participate in the Academic Decathlon.
D. She wanted to make preparations for applying to universities.
7. What can we learn from Khadijah’s story
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Good things come to those who wait.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
C
Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went in there, or been about to speak but suddenly realized you had no idea what you were going to say The human brain normally balances countless thoughts and actions, but sometimes, it seems to short-circuit. To figure out why, we have to look into what really happens when we forget what we were just thinking about.
It’s important to know two different types of memory: long-term and working memory. Long-term memories are a broad category of memories that involve knowledge and experiences stored in the brain for extended periods. On the other hand, thoughts in working memory, whose certain characteristics are likely to explain why we forget, flash through the mind for only seconds at a time.
First, working memory has very limited capacity. People can hold only about four to seven “chunks” of information - such as letters or phrases - in their working memory at a time. Rather than being aware of all of these “chunks” simultaneously (同时地), the brain bounces around from one idea to another, making it more likely that one gets neglected. Second, the brain quickly erases unimportant things from working memory to make room for new information. So unless those short-term memories are transferred into long-term memories, they’re soon gone from conscious thought.
Because the brain isn’t actually capable of multitasking, it has to “juggle” different thoughts as our working memory rushes around to different ideas, which requires conscious effort and attention. If attention becomes focused on only one of those thoughts or is diverted somewhere new, the brain loses track of the earlier thoughts. And alcohol and aging may worsen the case.
To stop forgetting things, it’s advised against multitasking. When you think you’re multitasking, you’re juggling, which makes forgetting more likely. Moreover, recreating the context can help, which means going back into the room you were before. Those context clues might give the brain the extra boost it needs to reach back a few seconds in working memory and regain the thought.
8. How did the author introduce the topic
A. By making contrasts. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By giving background information.
9. What do we know about memory
A. Memory can’t be restored if it disappears.
B. Practic ng multitasking does good to working memory.
C. Working memory cannot be transferred into long-term memory.
D. People’s working memory capability varies with different life stages.
10. What does the underlined word “juggle” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Balance. B. Present. C. Master. D. Attain.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Two types of memory B. Improving our memory
C. What did I come in for D. How does our memory work
D
Attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is characterized as a person having difficulties with inattentiveness, lack of impulse (冲动) control, or both. While nearly 10 percent of children are diagnosed with the disorder, nearly 6.8 percent of adults have ADHD — up from 4.4 percent in 2003. About 366 million adults worldwide currently live with ADHD, which is roughly the population of the U.S.
There are possible explanations for the growing number, including greater awareness and previously missed diagnoses. But one understudied environmental factor may be technology-related ADHD.
Recent research shows that genetics play a significant role. “There are also environmental factors that can result in ADHD,” notes Jill Rach Beisel, a physician at a medical center. Among the most understudied environmental factors is the overuse of technology. A study shows that frequent digital media use involving social media, gaming, texting, and streaming movies, music, or TV increases one’s risk of developing ADHD symptoms by nearly 10 percent. A large population study shows that to prevent attentional problems related to technology use, one should limit smartphone use to 60 minutes a day.
The link between technology use and attention problems could also be attributed to the fact that people who constantly use technology have fewer opportunities to allow their brain to rest in its natural state.
Elias Aboujaoude, a behavioral scientist, explains that “for a long time, the association between ADHD and heavy online use was a chicken-and-egg question in our field: Do people become heavy online consumers because they have ADHD and online life better suits their attention span, or do they develop ADHD as a result of digital overload ” Clinical experience and research, he says, “increasingly suggest that the latter may be more relevant.”
Though some scholars aren’t as sure, if technology use really does cause ADHD in adults, Aboujaoude says the new studies would still be worthwhile. “Because the current understanding of the disorder is a neurodevelopmental syndrome (神经发育症状),” he explains, “this sort of ‘acquired’ ADHD… (would have) a different source and may require different interventions and support.”
12. Why does the author mention the population of the U.S. ______
A. To present a new fact to readers.
B. To estimate a future tendency in the U.S.
C. To help readers understand the large scale of adults with ADHD.
D To suggest that the U. S. has the highest rate of adults with ADHD.
13. What may explain the increasing number of adults having ADHD according to Jill Rach Beisel
A. Genetics. B. Technology.
C. Greater awareness. D. Previously missed diagnoses.
14. What is Elias Aboujaoude’s argument about the relationship between ADHD and online usage
A. People develop ADHD due to heavy Internet consumption.
B. People become heavy online consumers because of ADHD.
C. It was a classic chicken-or-the-egg dilemma in their study field.
D. Heavy online consumers have fewer opportunities to allow their brain to rest.
15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning the new studies
A. Their significant implications. B. Their potential limitations.
C. Their appeal to more scientists. D. Their enormous market value.

Ben raced out of school. Christmas holidays! When he got home, he went to check on his pony, Scout. He slipped him a candy, and Scout nuzzled(用口鼻轻擦)his shoulder. Ben started toward the house and found his older brother Jack starting the snowmobile(雪地机动车)to deliver gas to Uncle Mike. Ben jumped on the back and joined him.
They set of slowly. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. When they arrived, Jack went over with the gas can. Ben looked up the mountain and saw something moving. He got binoculars(望远镜)and saw two animals. Could it be a horse Jack climbed back on the snowmobile and asked Ben to leave. When Ben told Jack he saw horses up in the snowy trees, Jack didn't believe it. Ben looked back up the mountain, but he couldn't see anything.
At dinner Ben told his father he saw two horses up on the mountain today. “If they are horses, they must be trapped by all this snow." said his dad. "If they're trapped, we have to do something," said Ben, his voice rising.
His dad looked at Jack. "Well, in the morning go and take a look. Take the gun and some hay(干草). If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not…"Jack looked serious, and slowly nodded. Ben knew what the gun was for, and his chest went cold.
In the morning, they set off in the cold snow. When they got to the place where Ben had seen the horses, they stopped and looked up using binoculars. No horses. They waited for a few minutes.
"I see them. They' re horses. Let's take the snowmobile up there. "Ben suddenly exclaimed. They drove the snowmobile in the deep snow and finally reached the place. "Oh no!" said Ben "They're starving!" One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired.
Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses

读后续写答案
Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.Jack sighed and picked up the gun, pointing to the poor dying horse. One horse turned and looked at him and made a soft little noise. “We should try,” pleaded Ben. He walked around the horses again, patting on the neck of the big brown one, which made a sad, small groaning sound. Ben quickly got the hay off the back of the snowmobile and spread it around in piles. The horses ate hungrily, and Ben poured water into a pail for them. With one more pat to each horse, Jack and Ben climbed on the snowmobile and drove back down the mountain as quickly as they could to report their news.
Paragraph 2: The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They went from the hardware store to the gas station, where they put notices up asking for help. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. They worked for hours but only made a small dent in the snow. “This is hopeless,” said Jack. He leaned on his shovel and wiped his dripping nose. “Let’s go home. No one is going to help.” “We can’t give up,” said Ben. But his fingers were frozen, and his nose felt numb. Suddenly, a group of snowmobilers arrived with shovels and hot chocolate. They had followed Ben and Jack’s tracks up the trail. They tried everything they could to help the horse to stand up. With the effort of everyone around, the horses finally struggled to their feet. Unity is strength.
