My favourite Greek hero is Odysseus. He is the main character in The Odyssey, a famous story by the Greek storyteller, Homer.
Odysseus and his friends go from Greece to Troy to fight. After ten years, they win and are very proud of themselves. Then they set off for home, but on their way, there is a great storm. They become lost, and that is the start of their great adventures. While they are travelling, they meet many strange people. Most of them want to hurt Odysseus and his friends, but a few help them. On one island a very big man with only one eye tries to kill them. During this fight, Odysseus loses many of his friends, but he manages to get away.
After ten years of fighting and ten more years on the way home, Odysseus completes his journey and manages to get back to his own country, alone. His wife and son are waiting for him to come back. However, he looks so different that they fail to recognise him. After Odysseus saves his wife and son from some bad men, they finally know who he is. He is happy to be back home again after so many adventures.
I like this story because it is interesting and exciting. I think Odysseus is a true hero. He is very clever and has a strong will. I also learn from him that great men never give up, no matter what difficulties they face.

A famous British nurse
Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May 1820. In
1851, she was trained as a nurse. Three years later, she
went to a British military hospital so that she could help
British soldiers. Before she arrived, many soldiers died in
the hospital because it was dirty. Florence Nightingale
worked hard to make the hospital clean and save soldiers’ lives. When she returned to Britain in 1856, she became a national hero. Florence Nightingale wrote several books about nursing, and she also started a school to train nurses. She died in London on 13th August 1910, when she was ninety years old.

environmental protection) or different careers
(writer, scientist), etc.
List your heroes.
9. Choose and research your hero.

● Write down everything you know about your hero.
● Find out more facts about your hero in books, newspapers and on the Internet. You can also ask your parents or your teacher for more information.
10. Write about your hero.
● Plan a passage with three or four paragraphs like this:

My hero
Jackie Chan is a well-known actor. He was born in 1954. He finished his first movie when he was 8 years old. In 1978, he performed Drunken Master (《醉拳》), a movie with comedy and action. He become famous from then on.
Except acting, Jackie is also a great director. He directed many famous movies, like Project A (《A计划》), Police Story (
《警察故事》). He has won countless prizes. Jackie is not only a great actor but a great man as well. He has a kind heart and friendly smile. He thinks of others. He repeats failures but he never gives up, He gave money to charities many times. Jackie said, “If I die, I will donate all my money.”
This is Jackie, my true hero.

Language points
1. 原因状语从句
表示主句行为的原因的从句是原因状语从句。
原因状语从句的连词引导,常用的是because。
eg. We went by bus because it was cheaper.
我们乘公交汽车去,因为这样便宜一些。
I do it because I like it.
我做这件事是因为我喜欢。
注意:
1) because 习惯上不能与 so 连用;
2) because引导的原因状语从句有时可以与带有because of 短语的句子互换。
eg. I can’t get to sleep because there is noise outside.
= I can’t get to sleep because of the noise outside.
由于外面声音嘈杂我睡不着。
since也可以用来引导原因状语从句, 表示显然的或已为人所知的理由, 常译为“因为; 既然”。
e.g. Since everyone is here, let’s start.
既然大家都到齐了, 我们就开始吧。
2.目的状语从句
表示主句行为的目的从句是目的状语从句。
目的状语从句的连词引导,常用的是so that。
eg. I got up early so that I could catch the first bus.
我起得很早,目的是为了赶上头班公共汽车。
She worked hard so that everything would be ready by 5 o'clock. 她努力工作,以便在五点前是一切都就绪。
目的状语从句的特点:
从句中一般都含有表示可能性的词语, 比如could。其他可以表示可能性的词语还有will, would, can等。
3.结果状语从句
结果状语从句表示“由某个行为而导致的结果”。
结果状语从句的连词引导,常用的是so。
eg. He worked too hard, so he fell ill again.
他工作过于劳累, 结果又病倒了。

be proud of: 自豪,高兴
eg.
If I were you, I would be proud of him, too.

2. set off 的用法

set off: 出发;(使)开始;
eg.
I set off for a new adventure in the United States on the first day of the new year.

3. more 的用法
After ten years of fighting and ten more years on the way home, Odysseus completes his journey and manages to get back to his own country, alone.
ten more years : 再有十年
eg.
Please give me five more minutes.

more用于数词后, 表示数量的增加, 表示在原有的基础上又增加了若干数量
