Walled Cities Of The World
There are numerous historical walled cities across the world, whose walls date back several centuries. These walls were fortification (碉堡), a necessity throughout medieval eras for defense. They have been preserved as historical monuments and popular tourist attractions in the modern time.
York, England
The city of York is a medieval city situated in the north of England. Historically, the city was ruled by the Romans, Angles, and the Vikings before being incorporated as part of the Kingdom of England in 954. Located in the city are walls built in 71 AD which have been restored and extended with time.
Xi’an, China
The city of Xian is one of the oldest cities in China. It prospered economically as the eastern last station of the Silk Road. The existing walls were originally built in 770 BC and reconstructed in the 14th century under the Ming Dynasty. The walls are well preserved and are a major tourist attraction in the city.
Quebec City, Canada
Quebec City was a colonial (殖民地的) town which was fortified by the settling Europeans. The walls began to be built in 1608 under both British and French regimes (政权). A fort was constructed by the British as an additional defensive measure and remains undamaged to date. The city’s fortifications were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
Mexico City, Mexico
Historically, the City of Mexico gained importance as the Aztec Capital. The Spanish then drove out the Aztecs and rebuilt it as the Spanish Capital. The walls protecting the city were built in 1521. Mexico City is also home to numerous colonial-era buildings which together with the walls are major tourist attractions in the city.

“How can you be okay with living in a country so far away and so different ” “The language is so hard. How are you going to be able to find your way around ” These are the most common questions I heard after I told people I was going to study abroad in China, a country that seemed so far away. Why risk dealing with that when Paris or London would be so much more accessible
But a part of studying abroad is about embracing(欣然接受) the inaccessible. I took Chinese in high school and fell in love with it. Ever since I started college, I was determined to study in China. Three years later, I made it happen.
Of course, it was not easy. At the airport, people spoke English so I didn’t worry too much about finding my way around. And then I met other foreign students who would become my best friends for five straight months. But once leaving the airport and downtown areas, we were fully immersed(沉浸) in China. I lived in a more suburb-like(类似城郊的) area, more residential than the rest of Shanghai. People always looked at us curiously as we went about our days and few of them spoke English. It was awkward at first. Slowly, as we got more used to the language, people talked with us. Of course, they wanted to know the differences between living in America and living in China.
My roommate studied abroad in Ireland last semester while I was in China. There is nothing wrong with going to Europe, but if you want to broaden your horizons, I would suggest looking elsewhere. Living in a place that is so different from what I am used to gives me valuable experiences I can’t get any other way. My Chinese teacher was so amazing and patient with us, and my other Chinese friends helped me through the difficult part of feeling out of place in the unknown. In a strange way, not being able to express everything I want brings me closer to people.
29. How did people feel when knowing the author’s decision
A. Excited. B. Puzzled. C. Appreciated. D. Disappointed.
30. When did the author fall in love with Chinese
A. When she started college.
B. When she was in high school.
C. Three years after she went to college.
D. The third year she studied in China.
31. What do we learn about the author’s experience in China
A. She failed to get on with other foreign students.
B. She once had difficulty finding her way to college.
C. She spent little time sightseeing in the rest of Shanghai.
D. She was uncomfortable with people’s curious stares at first.
32. What might the author agree with according to the last paragraph
A. Language won’t be a problem for making friends.
B. It isn’t wise for her roommate to study in Ireland.
C. Her English-speaking friends make China a place of comfort.
D. Nations need to clear up misunderstandings between each other.

Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel(柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine(内燃机) models a run for their money.
As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions(排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim(声称) to be completely emission-free. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
33. The underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 probably means________.
A. aim B. difficulty C. result D. step
34. Why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars in the past
A. They were very poorly made. B. They were not widely promoted.
C. They were expensive. D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
35. What is the function of Paragraph 4
A. To introduce the history of electric travel.
B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.
36. Which is the best title for this passage
A. Driving into a Cleaner Future B. History of Electric Cars
C. Problems with Petrol and Diesel Cars D. Best Means of Transportation
D
During a judging period for a recent short story contest, I started thinking a lot about dialogue tags. Because in many submissions characters didn’t “say” a thing. They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one “said” anything. And I started wondering why.
The more I thought about it, the more I understood the temptation. We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose(散文). Why walk when you can skip or wander Why cry when you can sob or weep Why wouldn’t we reach for exciting verbs instead of dull “said” Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its own right The problem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting to become something more than the sum of its parts. Without something to provide structure, a collection of the world’s most glorious diamonds would still only amount to(等同于) a heap of rocks.
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting- we can sense it in the way they spit out words, clench fists, or storm from the room. What’s more, readers may not initially imagine a particular line being “sobbed.” When we reach the end of a sentence and find out our leading lady has actually sobbed instead of whispered, it pulls us right out of the story. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust our understanding and begin again. But that wonderful momentum when we’re fully immersed in the scene, holding our breath to find out what our heroine says next, is lost.
Creating a successful work of fiction is about giving the reader all the materials they need to build your fictional world in their mind. Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.
37. What do we know from the first two paragraphs
A. The word “said” is overused in our stories.
B. The use of exciting verbs makes characters alive.
C. Varieties of verbs are preferred by judges at contests.
D. Strong verbs are considered to be an eye-catcher.
38. Who contributes most to a good story according to the author
A. A talkative character. B. A vivid conversation.
C. A collection of dialogue tags. D. A wild imagination.
39. Which of the following does the author probably agree with
A. Creative dialogue tags help keep readers immersed in reading.
B. What was said should be prioritized(优先) over how it was said.
C. Readers may better understand a scene after rereading the line.
D. The more materials a work of fiction contains, the more successful it is.
40. What argumentative methods are used in this article
① Using examples ② Justifying an assumption
③ Comparing and contrasting ④ Appealing to readers’ emotions
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①③

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
According to some researchers at the Harvard business school, body language should be read through a scientific and unemotional eye. Whether in business or romance, some people use body language to convey(传达) false message and to take in others. 41 It can be very useful to learn a few tips about how to read body language lies.
Keep a close watch on the eyes. 42 At the same time, pathological(不理智的) liars and those practiced in the art of lying may hold your eyes for longer than a few seconds to make you feel uncomfortable and unable to rely on your instincts(本能).
Watch the hands of the person who speaks. While keeping the hands held behind the back may be thought of as a power pose, it is more likely to mean the person is hiding something. 43 By contrast, liars usually will keep their palms hidden in the pockets or turned over.
Consider how the person touches his face. Taekwando instructors at TKD tutor report that people will often cover their mouths in an effort to “cover up” their lies. 44
Be on guard around people who touch their faces in any form. Rubbing the nose often indicates the person is a skilled liar and is merely moving his hand from his mouth on purpose. A person who rubs his eyes often is trying to avoid eye contact while lying.
45 Standing absently, shrugging(耸肩) and other gestures that are abnormal for the person can also be signs of a liar.
A. Truthful people use open palms.
B. Don’t interrupt them when they are speaking.
C. They may start a fake cough to cover the signal.
D. Pay attention to nervous gestures that could give away a liar.
E. It is very difficult for a liar to look at you straight in the eye.
F. A person’s body language will very often suggest that a person is lying.
G. They may feel uncomfortable with their clothing by straightening their pants’ leg.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress(贫困).

范文赏析
version 1:
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. Accepting the money, the man felt a strong sense of warmth and gratitude welling up inside him and surging through his body, with tears streaming down his face. “Thank you, lovely boy!” He said in a trembling but sincere voice, bowing to Edward. “It’s my pleasure to help you out.” responding with a bright smile, Edward turned around, making his way home. On arriving home, his father asked what book he had bought. Proud and satisfied, he described what had happened. Hearing that, his father praised him in a delighted voice, “How kind you are!” Then, he led Edward to his study.
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” At the sight of the books, each seeming to blinking their eyes at him, surprise but happiness flashed over his face. He danced highly in the air like a happy bird, shouting words of “I’ve new books!” in an excited voice. Standing beside him, his father expressed his hope that Edward would continue his act of kindness later on. Knowing what he had done was rewarded, he made up his mind to do others in need a favor.
Version 2:
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. A wave of inexpressible gratitude came flooding when the man reached out his shivering hands for the shiny dollars. Taking a firm grip of them in one hand and holding Edward’s hand warmly, he stammered out words of thanks in his broken English. Knowing his money would bring much hope to a family in distress, Edward expressed his pleasure to help them out. After wishing them a peaceful and happy New Year, Edward went back home with a light heart. The moment he reached home, he couldn’t wait to share with his father his act of charity. At that, his father gave him a thumb up as recognition for his goodness.
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” He continued with satisfaction, “They are a reward for your kindness to people in need. You do deserve them.” Edward couldn’t contain his excitement at being presented such encouraging gifts. Looking intently at what may be the best he had ever received, Edward felt an immense pride in himself, which flowed all over his body. Since then, these books given by his father have been serving as a constant reminder of the importance of lending a helping hand to others in trouble whenever he could.
