To understand adverbial clauses of time and to be able to make adverbial clauses with after, as soon as, before, since, until, when or while.

用从句来表达一件事情或一个行为发生的时间, 这个从句就叫时间状语从句。
不同的引导词引导的时间状语从句的意思也不同，常见的引导词有when，while，before，after，until，since和as soon as。
时间状语从句
一、when引导的时间状语从句
when引导的时间状语从句既可以表示点时间，也可以表示时间的延续，即表示一段时间，因此从句的谓语动词既可以是瞬间动词，也可以是延续性动词。此外，从句的动作既可与主句的动作同时发生，也可先后发生。
e.g. When I got home, I found the door open.
当我到家的时候，我发现门是开着的。
I used to like drawing when I was young.
我年轻的时候曾经喜欢画画。
二、while引导的时间状语从句
while引导的时间状语从句表示时间的延续，即表示一段时间，因此从句的谓语动词用持续性动词或状态动词，且持续性动词常用进行时态。此外，主句的动作发生在从句所表示的时间段之内或主从句动作同时发生。
e.g. There was a big noise suddenly while I was cooking.
我做饭的时候突然一声巨响。
He kept working part-time while he was at university.
他上大学的时候坚持兼职工作。
when与while 都意为“当……的时候”。when 引导的时间状语从句, 谓语动词既可以是持续性的, 也可以是终止性的；而while引导的时间状语从句, 谓语动词只能是持续性的, 并且常用进行时态。试比较：
When he woke up, it was nine o’clock． √
While he woke up, it was nine o’clock． ×
When I was waiting for a bus, I met her． √
While I was waiting for a bus, I met her． √
辨析
三、before引导的时间状语从句
before表示主句的动作发生在从句之前。
e.g. I can’t tell you what happened before he comes back.
他回来之前我不能告诉你发生什么了。
四、after引导的时间状语从句
after表示主句的动作发生在从句的动作之后。
e.g. After she finished the task, she enjoyed a happy vacation.
完成任务后，她好好地度了一个假。
五、as soon as引导的时间状语从句
as soon as表示主句的动作紧随从句动作之后发生的。表示“一……就”。
e.g. I will call you as soon as I arrive home.
我一到家就给你打电话。
六、until引导的时间状语从句
until（till）在肯定句中，常与延续性动词连用，意为“到……为止”；在否定句中，常与表示瞬间性动作的动词连用，意为“直到……才”。
e.g. I didn’t realize my mistake until he told me.
直到他告诉我，我才意识到自己的错误。
七、since引导的时间状语从句
since引导时间状语从句，意思是“自从……；从此；从 …… 以来”等。
1) 若since引导的状语从句的谓语动词是终止性动词（如go, come, leave, start, begin等）的过去时, 则从句表示的时间是“从该动作开始的那一时刻起”。这是最常见的一种用法。
e.g. He has been badly ill since his son went abroad.
　 自从他儿子出国以后，他就一直病得厉害。
2）若since引导的状语从句的谓语动词是持续性动词或表示状态的静态动词（如live, stay, study, learn, smoke, be等）的过去时, 则从句表示的时间是“从该动作或状态的完成或结束时算起”。如：
　It’s ten years since I’ve seen her.
我已经十年没有见到她了。

Work in groups. Choose a Chinese festival and answer the questions.
