Blind people used to get around with the help of a walking stick. They tap (轻敲) it along the ground as they move. At the same time, dogs are trained to help them, too. These guide dogs lead blind people through busy areas. When blind people are in a new place, they can ask others for directions. Then they pass on the information to the guide dog by using the right orders.
Now there is a new technology that can help blind people when they are in a new place. It is GPS (全球定位系统). GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS can tell a blind person exactly where he or she is. It uses satellites (卫星) in space to work.
Blind people who use GPS carry around a tiny receiver. The tiny receiver works like a talking map! First, the receiver gets signals (信号) from satellites in space. Then, a computer guides the user with voice orders. Finally, the user listens for exact directions.
GPS also lets people know what is around them. It tells the user the name of the street that is coming up. It may even tell the user something about a park or a store nearby. So blind GPS users can have a better idea about their neighborhood. They feel better about traveling alone and getting to new places.
Some scientists think that GPS still has room for improvement. For example, GPS will call the police as soon as possible when the blind people have an emergency (紧急情况) in the future. The blind people will live like normal people with the help of GPS. Their lives will be more convenient and easier.

Earth Day has been marked on 22 April every year since its beginning in 1970. This year, organizers are calling for three days of climate action, from 20 to 22 April, but expect the whole week running up to Earth Day—sometimes called Earth Week—to be a time when environmental problems take center stage.
Earth Day is an annual (年度的) event designed to pay attention to the serious environmental problems we're facing, from the climate problems to air pollution and forest cutting. Earth Day is celebrated to call for people around the world to protect the environment.
The first Earth Day was in 1970, which highlighted (强调) the importance of clean air and clean water. And it became an international movement in 1990.
The theme of Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth. It focused not only on the need to reduce our bad influence on the planet, but also on how we could play a role in repairing the damage we've done. We should look at natural processes, green technologies and creative thinking that can make a lasting influence to restore our earth.
How can you take part in the Earth Day activities Organizers help to organize activities around the world each year. You can plant a tree, reduce our carbon footprint, use less plastic, use less water and electricity or even eat less meat. We can all work together to make our world a little greener.

Have you ever counted the number of digits (数字) in your mobile phone number Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that
The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three digits tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for China Mobile and 186 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered (注册). And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we have been using 11 digits since 1999. Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.
And mobile phone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world. They use seven digits.

Imagine an expressway (高速公路) that can circle around the earth more than three and a half times! China is home to the world's largest expressway network (网), with a total length of 160,000 kilometers at the end of 2020. By 2035, the expressway network will cover all cities and counties, China Daily reported.
The expressway's blueprint (蓝图) was first announced in 1981, when China was still at the early stage of Reform and Opening up (改革开放).The rapid growth of the economy (经济) called for more convenient transportation. The government had planned to build expressways with a length of 35,000 kilometers over 30 years. But the goal was achieved in 2007, 13 years ahead of the schedule.
The expressways connect not only China's biggest cities but also many medium-sized cities. They reach about 70 percent of China's urban people. Different climate and terrain (地形) challenges were overcome. This allowed roads to be built in undeveloped areas.
The expressways provide strong support for China's economic development.Take the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway as an example. At the eastern end of the road, Shanghai is China's financial center. But the western end used to be one of the country's poorest areas. It's the Wuling mountain region. It covers the city of Chongqing, as well as Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.

Cooking was once regarded as a necessary part of education in the UK. But in recent years, it has become less important in schools. As a result, basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost. It is also making more children overweight, as parents use too much fast food that is harmful to their health.
The government is worried and it is looking for ways to solve the problem. A new law has been made. It requires all secondary schools (中学) to offer cooking lessons to students aged from 11 to 14 years old. They hope that this will encourage people to cook instead of eating ready meals, fast food or snacks.
Students will learn to cook twice a week. They will learn to use simple and fresh ingredients (原料) to prepare healthy and tasty food, following the instructions. Schools are also setting up cooking clubs all over the country. The clubs will provide more children with the chance to learn to cook. The children can learn to cook many kinds of foods in the clubs.
There are still difficulties. Head teachers are worried about the things they will need for the cooking. And about 15% of schools do not have kitchens and there are not enough teachers.

Life is like a journey. On the way, we have happiness and sadness. Sometimes it is full of regrets. It's not difficult for anyone around you to tell his regrets. When we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. How can we avoid future regrets
Make better plans. If you start to do something, you'd better make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. You will know what comes first and what comes last. You'll also know what you should do and what you shouldn't do. If changes happen, you will have more time to deal with them.

Find the right friend. A friend can make your life colorful and he or she may break your life as well. So you need to think twice when you choose a friend. When you get into trouble, ask friends for help. A little help may get you good results.

The planets and stars are very far away from us. For many years, people have hoped to visit space and the moon. People who go into space are called “astronauts”. The first astronaut went into space about 40 years ago, and some people went to the moon about 8 years later.
Space is amazing. However, it is dangerous in space. Small pieces of rock fly past very quickly all the time. There is no air, so there are no animals or plants. Astronauts have to take air, water and food with them. In space, you can pick up very heavy things easily, but it is difficult to eat and drink. For sleeping, astronauts spend the night floating (漂浮) in a sleeping bag.
Besides working, eating and sleeping, what do astronauts spend a lot of time doing in space It's exercise. If they don't take exercise, their bodies start losing the bone and muscle (骨骼和肌肉), which makes them weak.
It isn't good for our bodies to be in space for a long time. Astronauts don't usually stay in space for very long, but some have stayed for a year without any problems. Perhaps in the future we will all visit the moon or have holidays in space.

“Internet addiction (瘾)” was once used to describe young people who spent too much time watching videos or playing games online. But today, an increasing number of the old are becoming victims (受害者).
According to a report on the Internet use of China's elderly people last year, 38.6% of people aged 60 or over were Internet users. And some surveyed elderly people spent at least 10 hours on the Internet every day.
Phone overuse could lead to the higher risk of many diseases. Besides health problems, elderly people's phone addiction also brings family problems. For example, their adult children often get upset when elderly people stay up late playing with the phone or shop online blindly.
Why do old people depend heavily on mobile phones It's because they have lots of spare time and they wish to communicate with others.
Though it's natural for the elderly to meet their spiritual needs through the smart phone, they should limit (限制) their time on the Internet and get regular (有规律的) rest at night. Adult children should go home more often to talk with their parents and reduce (减少) their sense of loneliness and encourage them to do healthy activities.

Nothing can be more relaxing than taking a break from the busy life by travelling to an unknown place and meeting new friends. The beauty of nature will leave you dumb (哑的) once you start travelling, but it will make you a storyteller once you finish travelling. Tours and travels make us realize the beauty of nature. The United Nations World, Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in September 1979, decided to organize World Tourism Day and on 27 September 1980, it was first celebrated.
What can we students do on this day Okay, we don't have to go on a trip around the world. But we can celebrate this special day with a family staycation (宅度假). Here are some good ideas.
Visit a museum
Head out to an art museum in the afternoon. Not only are you touring the museum, but you can “travel” around the world, too. Take a look at foreign mountains, lakes or rivers and imagine you're “walking” through one of the cities that is hanging on the wall.
Take in some history
If you have a history center nearby, you can spend the day learning about different time periods, places and events. If not, search for local historical sites. These include historical homes or battlefields (战场).

Daddy just didn't know how to show love. It was Mom who held the family together. He just went to work every day and came home. He'd have a list of mistakes we'd made and he'd punish us for them.
Once when I stole a candy bar, he made me take it back and tell the man I stole it and told me that I should pay for it. But it was Mom who understood I was just a kid.
I broke my leg once on the playground and it was Mom who held me in her arms all the way to the hospital. Dad pulled the car right up to the door of the emergency room (急诊室) and when the staff asked him to move it, saying the space was reserved for emergency vehicles. He shouted, “What do you think this is A tour bus ”
At my birthday parties, Dad always seemed out of place. He just busied himself blowing up balloons, setting up tables, and running errands (差事). It was Mom who carried the cake with the candles on it for me to blow out.
I remember when Mom told him to teach me how to ride a bicycle, I told him not to let it go, but he said it was time. I fell and Mom ran to pick me up, but he stopped her. I was so mad that I got right back on that bike and rode it myself. He didn't even feel embarrassed and just smiled.
Whenever I called home, he acted like he wanted to talk, but he always said, “I'll get your mother.”

Do you like remembering things Is that difficult or easy for you I'd like to tell you some ways to improve your memory.
My first advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it often. You might review material two days after learning it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month, you will find that you can remember the material easily.
My second advice is to use a colored pen to mark the most important parts on your book. This will help you in two ways. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don't have to review all the material again.
Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind before you go to sleep. Because your brain still works while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorizing information is in the morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.

Many of us read news every day. It is probably because we'd like to know what's happening in the world. Today we can get news from TV or the Internet, but how did ancient people get news
At the very beginning, information spread by word of mouth. People living in tribes (部落) got news from neighbors or travelers. Ancient Romans changed the way people knew about their communities. They posted a list of daily happenings at public squares in the cities. Ancient Chinese people did it in another way. The government had news sheets sent to officials in the whole country so people could know what was going on in the capital.
The fifteenth century saw big progress in printing technology in the west. The progress brought a sudden rise of news business. Printers sold whatever people loved to read. In the sixteenth century, the first real newspaper appeared. People started to form the habit of reading newspapers. They liked to share their opinions on newspapers. The invention of telegraph (电报) machines led to another big step in history. News and stories were sent to the papers in minutes instead of weeks.
Now we get news in seconds from all over the world. We can become some kind of reporters by posting what happens around us online.
