I’m sorry to hear that you are going through a tough time with your parents lately. I can imagine how distressing this might be for you. Here are some suggestions for you.
First of all, you should have an honest heart-to-heart talk with your parents. Explain your thoughts and feelings to them as clearly and calmly as possible. Besides, listen to their opinions and try to understand their point of view. Last, you can invite them to participate in some family activities together to enhance understanding and closeness.

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in primary school. Small for my age, and more of a book-lover than a sports-lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. When fall came, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and went to private school, all the students were asked to join in either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we fought against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, speeding up my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. There were no school sports at the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, ray college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.
So, though, it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) developed in adulthood into a sports and health focus, considered necessary even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. I think, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
4. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in paragraph 1
A. Desire. B. Shame. C. Emotion. D. Regret.
5. In the author’s opinion, what led to her victory in the Softball Throw event
A. Her advanced sports outfits. B. The sports talent from her father.
C. The training offered by her father. D. Her confidence in her sports ability.
6. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood
A. She continued her love for sports. B. She preferred reading to exercising.
C. She generally exercised on weekends. D. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article
ATo express her love for sports and health.
B. To stress the benefits of physical exercise.
C. To describe how her father built her interest in sports.
D. To think back to her childhood memories about sports.
C
During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction (干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street — so I can focus.” His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his method works.
The research examined various levels of noise on participants (参与者) as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups with various levels of noise in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels.
The differences between most of the groups were so small that they could be ignored; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — where there was a level of noise similar to background chatting in a coffee shop — performed better than the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
The study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to work, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face communications and conversations influence the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
8. Why does the writer mention his interview at the start of the passage
A. To advertise for one of his new books.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To show his confusion about the interview’s actions.
D. To express the interviewer’s annoyance over his open office.
9. What does Paragraph 2 tell us about the research
A. Theory of the research. B. Place of the research.
C. Results of the research. D. Method of the research.
10. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability
A. 85 decibels. B. 70 decibels.
C. 50 decibels. D. Total silence.
11. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people
A. Constant interruptions. B. Limited working space.
C. Personal privacy unprotected. D. Inconvenience of group discussion.

As the extreme heat waves now affecting parts of Europe, Asia and the US make clear, homes in any area of the would badly need to be changed to help deal with a hotter climate.
The quickest, simplest solution is to equip (安装) air conditioning. But this would lead to a huge increase in electricity demand, researchers warn, driving further climate change. “If our homes are overheated and the first solution that we run to is air conditioners, that is going to dry up our energy systems,” said Miranda, a researcher from Oxford University.
A greener solution would be to develop “passive cooling” technologies, which don’t require large energy inputs. Bertie Ozarisoy from Middle East Technical University found a special home built in 2015, Userhuus, had a “severe overheating risk” during the summer. Using computer models of the house, he found that adding a wind catcher was the most effective for reducing indoor temperatures. Wind catchers get the cooler wind from high above the ground and direct it into the building, pushing out the warmer air inside the house. However, although wind catchers could be easy to fit to new homes, equipping them is likely to be expensive.
Further research showed that opening windows at night and pulling down shades during the day can lower indoor air temperatures by 14C during a heatwave. “Most heat in a home comes from two sources; first, people and equipment they use, and second, solar heat gain through windows.” Says Bertie. “Hot outside air is actually a very small source.”
“The important thing is to open up the entire house at night, to open the windows as soon as outdoor air is cooler than indoor air, and to leave them open all night until the next morning. Close them only when the outdoor air temperature rises.” he added. Blocking sunlight from entering the home is therefore an effective way to keep temperatures under control.
12. What is Miranda’s attitude towards equipping air conditioning
A. Uncaring. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Unfavorable.
13. What might be a disadvantage of a wind catcher
A. Its high cost. B. Its poor effect.
C. Its ugly design. D. Its equipping problem.
14. According to Bertie Ozarisoy, most heat in a home comes from __________.
A. hot outside air B. people’s activities
C. air-conditioning system D. poorly-designed windows
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Sources of Heat B. Reasons for Heatwaves
C. How to Keep Homes Cool D. How to Equip Air Conditioners

When the tragedy struck me during the Depression (大萧条) my father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again.
The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a puddle (水坑) after a rainstorm when I felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on my feet. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away — never knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was.
An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I returned home, I could hardly walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them...but I couldn’t. I felt so left out despite my parents’ company.
My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a tricycle (三轮车) to strengthen the muscle and eventually get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an expensive thing. Times were tough during the Depression and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove.
Dad couldn’t afford the bus fare and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat to get to work. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a disabled person all my life.
