It all started with a post on social media. Returning home from the grocery store, then 25-year-old Simone Policano felt compelled to help the elderly in her neighbourhood to practise safer social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. With this in mind, she reached out to her friends via the social media, inquiring about existing volunteer opportunities in the state of New York. Unexpectedly, many responded to her post, expressing their interest to volunteer as well. As a result of that outreach, one of her friends, Liam Elkind joined Policano. They decided to start an initiative called Invisible Hands Deliver.
Just two days after conceiving(想出)the idea, Policano and Elkind had a website up and running. This site allowed the elderly and other at-risk individuals to make requests for groceries and prescription medicines to be delivered to them. Volunteers left the bags of groceries outside the doors. The webpage also included a call for volunteers, which gained more than 2,000 sign-ups within the first five days.
As the pandemic began to take its toll on New York in March 2020, Invisible Hands Deliver witnessed a massive outpouring of support from like-minded individuals in the community. Besides volunteering to deliver groceries for free, New Yorkers also reached out to translate the Invisible Hands flyers into over a dozen languages, enabling the organisation to reach out to more members of the community.
Following its success in New York and New Jersey, the organisation has expanded its operations to Philadelphia and there are plans to expand to other areas of the United States. Their acts of kindness have also inspired similar networks to sprout up worldwide. Invisible Hands Deliver is also supported by other organizations.
Helmed by a team of college students and recent graduates, Invisible Hands Deliver has shown that one is never too young to make a difference and give back to the community. The Food and Drug Administration (F. D. A.) announced a new proposal on Wednesday that would change the criteria for which packaged foods the agency considers “healthy”, in an attempt to modernize its approach to nutrition and reduce the burden of diet-related diseases.
Currently, about 5 percent of all packaged foods are labeled “healthy”, according to the agency. The definition, which was set in 1994, allows for food manufacturers to add the word “healthy” to their products, as long as the products have limited amounts of total fat, saturated (饱和的) fat, cholesterol and sodium (钠) and provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of one or more of the following nutrients: vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein or dietary fiber. (Seafood, game meat and raw fruits and vegetables have slightly different criteria.) In 2021, the F. D. A. updated its guidelines to allow for some foods to contain more total fat and to include some that provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of vitamin D. Importantly, there is currently no limit on added sugars under the current definition- an omission that the F. D. A. believes is inconsistent with today’s nutrition science.
“The old rule was really outdated— you could create any kind of Frankenstein food that met the nutrient criteria and label it as healthy,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a professor of nutrition in Boston. “This is a major advance.”
The proposed rule, which the agency announced to coincide with Wednesday’s White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, introduces a new limit on added sugars-in general, no more than 2.5 grams per serving, although this can vary depending on the food.
The new definition aims to encourage healthy eating by prioritizing a mix of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, proteins and certain oils, including vegetable oils. A “healthy” food would need to contain a minimum amount of at least one of those food groups and be under the proposed limits for saturated fats and added sugars. Raw whole fruits and vegetables would automatically qualify. Many sugary cereals (谷物), highly sweetened yogurts and white breads, which might currently qualify as “healthy” under the existing definition, would be removed under the new rule.
12. What can we know about the old rule
A. It was set in 1994.
B. It can guarantee people’s health.
C. It has strict limit on added sugar.
D. It was consistent with today’s nutrition science.
13. What’s Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian’s attitude to the new proposal
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Supportive.
14. Which of the following will automatically qualify for the new proposal
A. Seafood.
B. Highly sweetened yogurts.
C Raw whole fruits and vegetables.
D. Food containing large amounts of total fat.
15. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A diary. B. A textbook. C. A newspaper. D. A science fiction.

The incident took place at Cheektowaga, a town in Erie County, New York, in the middle of a historic and dangerous snowstorm. I had gone out to visit my friend living in another county, but unfortunately I got stuck and was unable to drive further.
I fully realized how dangerous this would be as there was not enough gas left in the truck for me to get through the deadly snowstorm. The situation got even worse in such a place without any houses in sight.
I stayed in my truck, calling for help anxiously but the weak signal didn’t help me get connected. There was nothing I could do but wait. At midnight, there came a knock outside the truck. I opened the door and surprisingly found an old lady standing in the storm with just a thin coat, clearly not enough to survive the snowstorm. I invited her to get inside my truck at once. She told me in a weak voice that her name was Mary and her car broke down. She had walked a long way before finding my truck.
Misfortune never came alone. Soon, we realized the air conditioner burned all the fuel in my truck and it was getting colder and colder inside the truck. Mary closed her eyes without saying a word, shaking in the corner. Considering Mary’s condition, I decided to take action right now. Luckily, the GPS of my truck still worked. And with the help of GPS, I noticed that a school was nearby. I decided to take shelter in the school. Since Mary was too weak to move, I carried her on my back, heading to the school. After ten minutes’ struggle in the snow, we finally arrived, but found the school gate locked.

15. Where is the text probably taken from

【答案】Dear Charlie,
Knowing that you are curious about my life and study, I am glad to share with you the sentence I am particularly fond of. It’s something my grandfather always said: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
This means that if we really want to do something we can find a way to make it happen. It’s about not giving up and always trying our best.I remember when I was learning to ride a bike, I fell down a lot and got hurt. I wanted to quit, but then I remembered my grandfather’s words. So I kept trying and finally learned how to ride.
This sentence has helped me a lot in my life. Whenever I face difficulties, I just think of it and feel more confident. It makes me believe that I can do anything if I try hard enough.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The next morning, a policeman drove by and found the gate broken.

【答案】Mary was still shivering and seemed to be in a worse condition. I had no choice but to find a way to break into the school. Fortunately, with the help of a snow shovel lying next to the gate, I managed to make it. I found the nearest classroom and laid Mary on one of the benches. I also found a pile of unused blankets and used them to wrap Mary up. I felt satisfied that I had done everything that I could to help her.
He came in to investigate. When he entered the classroom, he found me and Mary still asleep, wrapped in blankets. He woke us up and asked if we needed any help. I gratefully accepted his offer to drive us to the nearest gas station. I filled up my truck and made sure it had enough fuel to get me to my destination safely. As I waved goodbye to the policeman, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky I was to have Mary’s unexpected appearance that night. Without her, I might not have been able to survive the dangerous snowstorm.
