In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I’d never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn’t have much. My mom stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
“I hope you like your toy,” my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body, as if in giving me this toy he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier. I did really well in high school. Every good grade was a thank-you to my parents for all they’d done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂). I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I’d felt from that unexpected gift I’d received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit (非盈利) organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I traveled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

C. Responsible and confident D. Hardworking and caring.

C. By buying them some unexpected gifts. D. By setting up a nonprofit organization.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Toys for Ecuador Gave Children Christmas Gifts
B. Father’s Gift Pushed a Boy to Succeed Academically
C. Father’s Love Never Left Boyhood Memories Behind
D. A Plastic Cowboy Inspired Toys for Ecuador

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify (识别) people even if they are wearing masks. Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process (过程) involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel” recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings.
The other product is a ”multi-channel” recognition system that uses groups of surveillance cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified, ” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%. However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is graunchy,” Huang said.
People were reacting differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.
8. What did the company do to build the system
A. They gathered many face images. B. They employed hundreds of people.
C. They used the latest technology. D. They spent about a decade (十年) building it.
9. According to the passage which of the following can be true

B. The recognition rate of masked faces is about 99.5%.
C. It’s hard to recognize people with masks and sunglasses.
D. The single channel product is as powerful as the multi-channel.
10. What does the underlined word “graunchy” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Difficult. B. Suitable. C. Normal. D. Different.
11. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To show people’s attitudes toward the system. B. To introduce a new facial recognition system.
C. To advertise two products of facial recognition. D. To show the advantages of facial recognition.
D
There have been many studies that show being in nature is good for your health. Walking in the woods is good for your well-being (健康). Living near trees can help you live longer. But when you go for a walk in the woods, what makes you feel good Is it the sights or smells or sounds A new study finds it might be the birds you hear while you have a walk.
Researchers from California Polytechnic State University analyzed (分析) how much the natural sounds people hear when they’re outdoors influence well-being. They found that the “chorus (合唱)” of birds singing increased well-being in protected natural areas.
For the study, researchers put 10 hidden, evenly spaced (等间距) speakers (扬声器) on two parts of trails (小路) in the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks in Colorado. They played recorded songs from 11 kinds of birds. The researchers take turns to play the birdsong for a few hours a day for a week, and then turned off the speakers for a week at a time. They interviewed hikers after they passed through the areas with the speakers.
“The main result is that hikers that heard the birdsong showed a higher level of well-being compared to those that did not hear the birdsong,” Biology Professor Clinton Franeis, who led the research, says.
Hikers who heard more birdsong on the first part of the trail said they felt better. Those who heard more birdsong on the second part reported that they thought more birds lived along that part of the trail. This feeling of more birds helps make the hikers feel better. “With the chorus, we were able to show that natural sounds have a clear influence on the quality of hikers’ experiences,” says Francis.

B. To remind hikers of their health.
C. To play sounds of different birds.
D. To hunt more birds for research.
14. What was the final step of the research
A. Comparing. B. Placing speakers.
C. Playing birdsong. D. Interviewing.
15 What is the best title for the text
