When love and the Roaring Twenties meet, you get The Great Gatsby. When books and TikTok, a social media app, come together, you get BookTok, the suitable side of the social media platform where readers recommend, review, and theorize about their favorite books and authors.
This Internet gathering has become a leading force in the book world, changing non-readers into people who can’t stop, giving literary fans their next excitement, and selling copies in the process. Part of what makes BookTok unique is that readers’ taste and enthusiasm determine what wins popularity on the app, not necessarily marketing money from publishers or authors, creating a kind of closeness among users, like they’re getting recommendations from friends.
“I never had close friends who read the same kind of books as me,” Jessi, 23, said. “And I wasted time on short videos, until the time I hit BookTok by accident, when I realized I could turn that wasted time into reading.” After following other book accounts for a long time, she started creating her own videos on her account to share her own experiences with books, emotions, and all. “I just really wanted to share my own feelings,” Jessi says.
This form of influence has proven to have real effects. BookTok, aside from having more than 108 billion views on TikTok, has helped enhance book sales across the charts. Data by NPD BookScan revealed 825 million books were sold in the U. S. in 2021, up 9 percent from the previous year, which was the highest number it had seen since 2004. “I feel confident in saying this is the biggest social media impact we’ve seen concentrated on a single platform since I’ve been tracking books,” a director at NPD BookScan wrote in a post.
But it’s not just for readers. Tessa Bailey, the author of It Happened One Summer, was surprised to discover one day her novel was selling better than usual. “I had been doing this for ten years. Why is this one selling so well ” Bailey said. “People are talking about it on BookTok. So I got in there. BookTok is from readers and for readers. And over the last year or so, I’ve communicated with readers.”
8. What makes BookTok special
A. There is a wide selection of books. B. Creative advertisements are placed.
C. Popular book lists are updated quickly. D. Readers’ interest determines the hits.
9. What change did Jessi have after using BookTok
A. She learned to deal with loneliness B. She desired to write book reviews.
C. She made a lot of money from short videos. D. She started reviewing others’ book accounts.
10. What does the underlined word “enhance” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Improve. B. Balance. C. Decrease. D. Recover.
11. What does the example of Tessa Bailey show about BookTok’s role
A. It boosts people’s desire to express themselves. B. It increases readers’sense of belonging
C. It helps authors connect with readers. D. It provides inspiration for authors.

In the classic movie The Mighty Ducks, a group of ice hockey players band together, get better, and eventually win. That’s the dream of players on losing teams. But for many kids’ sports teams, it doesn’t. There is no winning, no victory cheers.
Most people don’t like losing, with the discouraging record of the scoreboard, watching while the other team’s players throw victorious hands in the air. Parents adjust complex family schedules for seemingly countless practices, then wonder what it’s all for when their child’s team never comes home a winner. So is losing all the time really good for children It can be. Experts agree that losing at sports, no matter how unending, can allow children to learn from failure. Losing all the time builds philosophy, friendship, sportsmanship, and the idea of athletics as a series of increasing victories. The team may struggle, but teammates improve moment by moment.
Milt Shapiro, who lives in Washington, coaches a team that lost “by football scores”. He doesn’t worry if a player cries, even though tears upset parents. “I love the fact that he’s crying, which means he cares and he’s passionate. We will change that into something we can use on the field. I would focus on small victories within each game,” he says.
Sports psychologist Caroline Silby, who practices in the Washington area, says in an email that the real problem with losing all the time lies with the parents. Trying to make children win all the time can be harmful. Also, losing is not such a big deal that it should be covered up. If parents don’t speak about games-or seasons-that ended badly, children may think that means that failure is so awful that they shouldn’t even talk about it.
Also, Silby says, if parents get angry, blame unskilled players, or talk endlessly about a loss, they ruin the whole point of being on a team: a sense of belonging. Athletes who have that feeling-that they are connected to something larger than themselves-are less stressed and have higher self-esteem. And overall, she says, losing seasons can give athletes some perspective and help them grow better at managing frustration and doubt.
12. What’s the experts’ opinion about children’s losing at sports
A It exercises parents’ patience. B. It’s beneficial to kids’ growth.
C. It makes a team less competitive. D. It leads to children’s short-lived emotion.
13. How does Milt Shapiro react to his team’s loss
A. He changes their training plans. B. He gets angry with his students.
C. He comforts players with small gifts. D. He treats it as a learning opportunity
14. What does Caroline Silby advise parents to do
A. Hide kids’ losing properly. B. Put more effort into kids’ training.
C. Encourage kids to face failure directly. D. Draw kids’ attention to things beyond games.
15. What would be the best title for the text
A. How Do Kids React to Losing at Sports
B. How Does Losing at Sports Impact Children
C. How Can Losing at Sports Be Good for Kids
D. How Should Coaches Respond to Children’s Losing

When most people look back on middle school, they remember their best friends, and so do I. But what I remember may be a little different. Let me explain.
My heart was pounding when I climbed onto the school bus on the first day of middle school. As I was looking for a seat, my eyes landed on two girls sitting together. They smiled at me and pointed to the seat next to theirs.
I sat down and we chatted. They were Heather and Jessica. It turned out that we had the first period together and we became friends. We ate lunch together, hung out in the park and played games in Jessica's room on weekends. But our friendship wasn't without its faults. Jessica had an "I'm-the-boss" personality. She always had to be in charge.
One time, the three of us went to the mall. I wanted to go to Abercrombie. But Jessica rolled her eyes and told me to go to Rave. Not wanting to argue, I followed her.
This skirt would look great on you. "Jessica exclaimed. "Try it on!"
"I don't like it," I said.
Jessica gave me a death glare so I made my way to the dressing room
I ended up spending fifty dollars on a skirt that I didn't even like, just to make Jessica happy. Throughout the following year, this was how it was. If Jessica went somewhere, Heather and I went there too. I found I was behaving as a pretended version of myself just to please Jessica and to keep her from being mad at me.
Then, summer came. Jessica invited Heather and me to go to Cape Cod with her. I decided to go to Florida with another friend instead, so Jessica got angry. I went to Florida and didn't hear from her.

【读后续写答案】One day, my phone rang and the caller ID showed “Jessica”. I answered it. “Why do my other friends call and you don't ” Jessica questioned. I thought it was time to tell her the truth, so I took a deep breath and said, "Jessica, you're fun to be with but I'm afraid of you. I never know when you're going to get mad at me. It's hard to have a friend who's always angry." The line went dead. She'd hung up on me.
Three days later, I received a text message from Jessica, reading “Can we have a talk ” We met in her room where we used to have so much fun together. Surprisingly, Jessica thanked me for what I said. When I said “sorry”, she told me, “I don't think telling the truth is a mistake. Real friends are there for you through the toughest times—they don't cause them. Can I have another chance " I was so touched by her words. Since then, she has become a much better friend, and me too.
