Stan Lee was born in 1922. When he was just 17, he got a job at a company that made comic books. Although the salary was beyond his imagination, Mr Lee got tired of it. Most superheroes were strong and smart and always knew the right thing to do. Mr Lee wanted to have a chance to create new superheroes that had weaknesses. Mr Lee didn’t create the heroes by himself. He worked with artists to come up with the ideas. Some people thought the comic books would not sell well and that the readers would be unhappy to see superheroes lead a normal life.
Mr Lee was able to create characters that were different from anything that had been seen in comic books before. Spider-Man was never sure he was doing the right thing, but he always seemed to have something funny to say to the bad guys. Mr Lee made it okay for comic book heroes to be like common people. He also had the clever idea of having his comic book heroes appear in each other’s stories. For example, Spider-Man might show up in a Fantastic Four story. This made readers feel shocked. He also brought them into the real world. Batman and Superman lived in made-up cities. But Mr Lee decided that Peter Parker (who turns into Spider-Man) should live in New York City.
In 1980, Mr Lee moved to California to promote his movies. He wanted to try and get his superheroes onto TV and into the movies. He didn’t have too much luck at first, although The Incredible Hulk became popular TV shows. But after the success of The X-Men and Spider-Man movies in the early 2000s, movies with Marvel heroes began to be favored by millions of fans. Marvel movies have now earned over $ 24 billion. It’s reported that about 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest has disappeared during the past 50 years. Deforestation is not only threatening the millions of unique plant and animal species native to the Amazon River area, it’s affecting humans worldwide. When it comes to the protection of the Amazon, it’s hard for many people to relate because they don’t feel connected to the area. There are actually a lot of direct connections, no matter how far away we are.
A connection that affects everyone on the planet is climate (气候) change. Planting new trees in the forest is basically a way of removing CO from the air. Rain forests have a carbon (碳) reduction nearly equal to half of what is in the air. About half of that is in the Amazon. Another case in point is a big snake called the bushmaster that lives in the Amazon. Today, millions of people use medicines made from its venom (毒液) to treat high blood pressure. So they have longer, fuller, and more productive lives.
In the 1960s, there was only one highway in the entire Amazon. That’s an area as large as the continental United States with one highway and three million people. Today, there are between 30 million to 40 million people, countless roads, and about 20 percent forests have been cut down. But on the plus side,50 years ago there were only two national parks and a national forest and a reserve in Brazil. Today, more than 50 percent of the Amazon is under some form of protection
“There’s been a lot of damage done and forest lost, but nothing is gone until it’s gone”, noted National Geographic explorer Dr. Thomas Lovejoy. “We want to see more shared planning between the departments of transportation, energy, agriculture, and the other industries in the area. We think Amazon cities can have higher quality of life and keep people in existing cities so there’s less reason to deforest.”
38. Which can replace the underlined word “Deforestation” in paragraph 1
A. Planting more trees. B. Destroying the forests. C. Protecting the species. D. Polluting the rivers.
39. What might the partial loss of the Amazon rainforest lead to
A. The increase of extreme weather. B. I he removal of CO2.
C. More people with high blood pressure. D. The overgrowth of the bushmaster.
40. How does paragraph 3 mainly develop
A. By making comparisons. B. By listing reasons.
C. By explaining a definition. D. By making a summary.
41. What is Dr. Thomas’ attitude towards the future of the Amazon rainforest
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Positive. D. Uncaring.
D
Machine ethics is a new field of research that aims to develop moral machines. It’s all about creating machines that can make moral decisions based on computer technology. If artificial intelligence (AI) is to be used in the context of machine ethics, then similarly one can call it “Artificial Morality” (AM).
While AI’s goal is to model people’s cognitive abilities, AM is about equipping artificial systems with the ability for moral judgment and action.
One field of application for moral machines is the care of the elderly. Systems to be used in this context face moral choices like “should the system monitor the user around the clock and what should be done with the data collected ” It is about the privacy of the user and the care of the relatives. A second example of the need for moral machines is autonomous driving. Of particular difficulty are the moral dilemmas that may be encountered, such as the need to decide whether to sacrifice a small number of lives to save a larger number if unavoidable.
It could be argued, however, that it is not the care system or the autonomous car that make a moral choice in these cases, but the programmers of those devices. But as the advances in artificial intelligence become greater. developers are less able to plan and predict what decisions a system will make in a specific situation. For example, AlphaGo Zero, which first knows only the basic rules of the game Go and then finds the optimal decision-making strategies by playing through a large number of games against itself. In no time, this system beat its predecessor AlphaGo, the first artificial system to defeat some of the world’s top human Go players.
Therefore, it is necessary to develop machines that have a degree of autonomous moral decision-making though the ethical basis of artificial systems is still not clear. Research groups in academia and in the industry should start thinking about the relevance of ethics and safety in AI.
42. Which of the following is true about AM
A. It is a moral decision based on technology. B. It aims to imitate people’s cognitive abilities.
C. It enables AI to make moral decisions. D. It gives advice to human on making decisions.
43. How does the writer illustrate the uses of AM
A. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By raising questions.
C. By mentioning its advantages. D. By giving examples.
44. What does the writer say about the programmers behind moral machines
A. They are the ones virtually in charge of the machines
B. They are incapable of predicting decisions of the system.
C. They are the ones who advance artificial intelligence.
D. They can find the best decision-making strategies.
45. What is the best title of the passage
A. Can and should machines act morally B. How and why machines make moral decisions
C. What AM is and how it is influencing us D. How AM works and where its future lies

This Way to Dreamland
Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this makes. them forget what they should be doing. Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them. They can seem forgetful and clumsy. 46 They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.

It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep. 49
Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. 50
Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.
A. Having interesting things to think about also helps.
