Zinaida Serebriakova(1884-1967)
Following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and her husband’s death a year later, Zinaida Serebriakova struggled to make a living as an artist. In 1924, she left her children in Russia and went to Paris for an art job. Little did she know that she would not return until 1965, due to strict rules in place in Russia and the complicated backdrop(背景) of World War II. Her paintings often featured landscapes near her family home and moments from her children’s daily lives. A year after her return to Russia, her daughter organized three successful exhibitions to celebrate her work.
Mary Cassatt(1844-1926)
Mary Cassatt was one of four women invited to exhibit with the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874. Following Cassatt’s sister’s diagnosis with a serious kidney disease, Cassatt only painted her extended family in private settings, with women and children as her special focus. Cassatt was hugely successful and her influence continues to be felt today.
Joan Mitchell(1925-1992)
Joan Mitchell was a leading young painter of her time in New York, part of the influential Artists’ Club and a participant in the 1951 Ninth Street Show that introduced Abstract Expressionism. However, in 1959, she moved to France, where she lived in a house that overlooked a landscape painted by Monet. Inspired by nature and great modern artists like Cé zanne, Matisse, and Monet, she aimed to capture feelings rather than recognizable landscapes in her art.
Emily Kame Kngwarreye(1909-1996)
An Aboriginal elder, Emily Kame Kngwarreye was one of Australia’s most important artists. Drawing on her experience making works with sand and batik(蜡染) as well as ceremonial body painting, she made her first painting on canvas when she was 79. Over the following eight years, she produced another 3,000, one of which became the first work by a female Australian artist to sell for over a million dollars.

I’d finally got some alone time as a new mom. I put on my running shoes and I found my rhythm as my feet hit the ground. My adrenaline(肾上腺素) kicked in as I told myself, “This is my comeback.” Prior to giving birth to a baby, I had been a runner since my 20s. Running made me feel free and it brought me a sense of peace I couldn’t find anywhere else. The harder my feet worked, the more I relaxed.
Now, as a new mom in my late 30s, I was picking running back up to prove to myself I was still the old me. However, it was not easy. My legs were weak as I shuffled(拖着脚走) down the track. I felt defeated. The old me had never felt so far away. Running felt like a burden, and the joy was far away from me. Even worse, I felt like a living dead at home. My son wasn’t sleeping through the night, which was exhausting all my extra energy.
However, I kept going. I went out for a run again and again. A few times a week,I pulled on my shoes and slowly, my one mile route turned into a 5kilometer. Gone were the debates in my head over whether I was a good mom and whether my house would ever be clean again. Running just let me be.
I had signed up for the half marathon I ran annually before my son was born as a motivation. When I began running, the marathon route felt so long, but then suddenly, it was over. When I crossed the finish line, I felt like a champion wearing my participant’s medal. My finish time was just a number; what mattered more to me was the journey.
Through my running experience,I have realized that nothing is impossible to a willing heart, not only running, but also anything else.

What once seemed far away is now a reality: Ordinary people can walk in space. On Sept 12, the SpaceX Polaris Dawn crew made history by performing the world’s first commercial spacewalk.
First announced in 2022, Polaris Dawn is the first of three missions designed to test and develop new space technologies. US Billionaire Jared Isaacman is the founder of the Polaris Program and has funded the missions through his collaboration with SpaceX.
On Sept 10, the crew of four astronauts, including Isaacman, was launched into space. After two days of preparations, Isaacman first stepped out of the spacecraft. “Back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here - it looks like a perfect world,” he said as he stepped out into space. Another crew member, Sarah Gillis, also took part in the spacewalk, with the actual time spent outside being around 10 minutes per astronaut, reported CNN.
Aside from this amazing achievement, the Polaris Dawn crew also tested their new SpaceX - designed spacewalk suits. The suit works like a mini-spacecraft that fits the human body. One of the engineers described it as “a suit of armor(盔甲) made of fabric”.
Unlike the heavy white suits used by NASA astronauts, SpaceX’s suits don’t have a backpack life support system. Instead, they get air and power from tubes connected to the spacecraft. SpaceX plans to use these suits for many future missions, both around Earth and in deep space.
Polaris Dawn also conducted nearly 40 scientific experiments. These experiments included testing wearable devices that collect body data, trying to reduce space motion sickness, and studying eye health in microgravity(微重力). Polaris Dawn also traveled through parts of Earth’s radiation belt, providing the chance to better understand how this radiation affects the human body.
After the five - day mission, on Sept 15, the Polaris Dawn crew landed safely on Earth in Florida, US.
NASA described the mission as “a giant leap forward” for the commercial space industry. It also brings SpaceX closer to its goal of commercializing space travel and reducing costs, which could enable people to live and work in space in the future.

A. They are larger but lighter in design.
B. They have a built - in life support system.
C. They are made from advanced materials.
D. They rely on the spacecraft for resources.
30. What research did the Polaris Dawn crew do
A. Testing radiation protection systems.
B. Evaluating the effects of space on hearing.
C. Studying body health and motion in space.
D. Collecting data on Earth’s surface changes.
31. What broader goal does SpaceX aim to achieve through missions like Polaris Dawn

Researchers from North Carolina State University argue that the addition of a fourth (white-colored) traffic signal would bring different traffic effects.
“Our work introduced the idea of a fourth traffic signal called a ‘white phase’, which taps into the computing power of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in order to expedite traffic at crossroads,” says Prof. Ali Hajbabaie, corresponding author of the paper. “Our research found that the more AVs there are on the road, the more efficiently the traffic moves. You’ll see less congestion(堵塞). To be clear, this improves travel time, fuel efficiency and safety for all of the cars.”
The white phase concept takes advantage of AVs’ ability to communicate wirelessly with each other and the computers in control of traffic signals. When enough AVs approach a crossroad, this would activate the new traffic light — the white light. While red lights mean stop, and green lights mean go, white lights will tell human drivers to simply follow the car in front of them. In other words, the white light serves as a signal. During the time, AVs are coordinating(协调) their movement to facilitate efficient traffic flow through the crossroad. When too many vehicles approaching the crossroad are driven by human drivers instead of AVs, the signal will return to the traditional green yellow red mode.
“If at some point in the future we see almost universal adoption of AVs, our models suggest that delays at crossroads would decrease by more than 25%,” Hajbabaie says.
Study authors acknowledge governments probably won’t adopt the new concept anytime soon. “Still, we’re now taking steps to ensure that future pilot projects will be both safe and effective. We’re currently setting up a physical testbed that will allow us to experiment with this concept in the physical world — not just in a computer model,” Hajbabaie concludes. “However, the vehicles we’re using in the testbed are small enough to hold in our hands. This will help us identify challenges without the expense — and safety risk — involved with using real vehicles.”
32. What does the underlined word “expedite” in paragraph 2mean
A. Work out. B. Speed up. C. Put off. D. Hold back.
33. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. How the white phrase works. B. When the traditional signals return.
C. What the white phrase brings vehicles. D. Why traffic efficiency is improved.
34. What does Hajbabaie expect of the white phrase
A. It’ll become more mature. B. It’ll reach consumers very soon.
C. It’ll reduce experimental costs. D. It’ll be tested in a computer model.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Using White Phrase Indicates Advanced Traffic
B. Fourth Traffic Signal Is Invented to Guide AVs
C. Traffic Congestion Makes White Phase Happen
D. Adding 4th Traffic Signal Can Ease Congestion
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Your inner dialogue can either be a stepping stone or a barrier to reaching your goals. If you have a harsh(严厉的) inner critic, you’re not alone: Self - doubt and discouraging predictions are common. 36 Here are some ways to deal with your inner critic.
● Pay attention to your thoughts.
You’re so used to hearing your inner voices that it’s easy to overlook the messages you’re sending to yourself. Start paying close attention to your thoughts. It’s estimated that you have around 60, 000 thoughts per day. That’s 60, 000 chances to either build yourself up or tear yourself down. 37
● Change the channel.
When you keep replaying a mistake you made in your head over and over again, you’ll drag yourself down. The best way to change the channel is by getting active. 38 Go for a walk, call a friend, or tackle a project you’ve been putting off.
● 39
Your thoughts aren’t always true. If you think, “I’m going to embarrass myself when I give that presentation,” pause for a minute. Take out a piece of paper and write down all the evidence that indicates you’re going to fail . Then, list all the evidence that you aren’t going to fail. Looking at the evidence on both sides can help you look at the situation less emotionally.
● Ask yourself what advice you’d give to a friend.
40 For example, while you might call yourself a fool for making a mistake, it’s unlikely that you’d say that to a loved one. When you’re struggling with tough times or doubting your ability to succeed, ask yourself, “What would I say to a friend who had this problem ” Then, offer yourself those kind and wise words.
A. Examine the evidence.
B. Train your brain to think differently.
C. But you don’t have to be a victim of your self-talk.
D. It’s often easier to be more merciful to other people than to yourself.
E. Find an activity that will temporarily keep you away from the negative voices.
F. Reminding yourself that your thoughts aren’t always true boosts your confidence.
G. Recognizing your thought patterns helps to understand how your thinking affects you.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born into a poor family from a small Indian village where we had no college, or university. After completing Grade Ten, my father came to me with some bad news...
“Son, I’m sorry. I won’t be able to pay any more of your educational expenses.”
I was the fourth and youngest son in the family. The family expenses had become too much for my father’s small army wage to handle. Not having money for my education worried me. I laid my head down that night, wondering what my future held in store. The words of my teacher came to me, “Nawaz, you must try and find another way for your future. Look at me! I grew up as a poor boy from the village. I struggled, I worked hard and I went to the city. You must find a way and never give up.”
I heard Karachi was a city of opportunity for poor people due to lots of small jobs. I decided to move to the city to get a job, so I could save up and pay for my education.
On a busy street not far from where I stayed, I found a job in a small restaurant. I waited on tables, cleaned floors, and washed dishes. I slowly saved enough money for my college admission fee. After that, I studied by day. By night and on weekends I worked at the restaurant. I was tired but determined to complete my education.
One day Mr. Jatin started asking me questions. “Where are you from ” “What are you doing here ” “Why are you working here ” He came to the restaurant for a cup of tea regularly in the afternoon, so the waiters were all familiar with him. I politely answered his questions about my situation.
“Mmm, I see,” Mr. Jatin nodded. “I’ve watched you work hard. And I’d like to pay for all your college fees. You can quit your job and focus on your studies.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I couldn’t believe what I had just heard.

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. My heart was filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and profound gratitude. I stood there, stunned for a moment, my eyes wide with astonishment. I thanked Mr. Jatin repeatedly, unable to contain my excitement. With his support, I could finally focus entirely on my studies without the burden of financial worries. I worked even harder, determined not to disappoint him and to make the most of this precious opportunity.
Having got a well-paid job after graduation, I realized it was time to pay back. I expressed my appreciation in the most heartfelt way possible, emphasizing how his kindness had transformed my life.
