At the age of 16, I lived with my parents at an institute 18 miles from Durban with no neighbors around. One day my father needed a ride to town for a conference. Meanwhile, my mother gave a list of groceries and my father asked me to take care of several pending chores, such as getting the car serviced. When I dropped my father off that morning, he said, “I will meet you here at5:00 p. m., and we will go home together.”
After hurriedly completing my chores, I went straight to the nearest movie theater. I got so engrossed that I forgot the time. By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and hurried to where my father was waiting for me, it was almost 6:00 p. m. He anxiously asked me, “Why were you late ” I was so ashamed of telling him I was watching a movie that I said, “The car wasn’t ready, so I had to wait,” not realizing that he had already called the garage. When he caught me in the lie, he said, “There’s something wrong in the way I brought you up that didn’t give you the confidence to tell me the truth. In order to figure out where I went wrong with you, I’m going to walk home 18 miles and think about it.”
So, dressed in his suit and dress shoes, he began to walk home in the dark on mostly unpaved, unlit roads. I couldn’t leave him, so for five-and-a-half hours I drove behind him, watching my father go through this agony for a stupid lie that I uttered.
I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again. I often think about that episode and wonder, if he had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all. I don’t think so. I would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single action was so powerful that it is still as if it happened yesterday.

26.How did the author feel when he drove behind his father
A.Relieved. B.Annoyed. C.Intolerable D.Regretful.
27.What can we learn from the text
A.You don’t have to choose a day to lie.
B.It’s better to lie than to admit a mistake.
C.Do not do to others what you don’t like to do.
D.Non-violence is powerful in teaching a lesson.
C
When I asked my 15-year-old cousin about her ideal occupation, she gave me an unusual answer, saying that she dreams of becoming an online celebrity, which reminded me of a new girl band called “Sunshine”. These teens have quickly got an ill fame across China because of their “unattractive” and “fat” appearance and laughably bad singing skills. But rather than wither at the offence coming from their 430,000 followers on Weibo, they seem to bloom on the criticism.
And following Sunshine’s explosion, numerous new bands like “Power Girls” and “Love-wings” starring average-looking adolescent girls started popping up on people’s mobiles. Lots of ordinary, disadvantaged Chinese teens with no skills but big dreams have looked to unlikely role models such as the Sunshine girls as proof that all it takes is a little self-confidence to get your name in the headlines. It’s incredible to witness so many young Chinese girls make spectacles of themselves online in a desperate attempt to stand out from thousands of potential stars.
This kind of grassroots self-promotion is fantastic for Chinese youth who may not otherwise have any opportunities or privileges to be outstanding in China’s competitive society, but for those well-educated kids, there is a rising concern among parents that social networking is distracting them from academics.
Sadly, these so-called stars quickly disappear from people’s attention once a new band pops up. Besides, they are likely to leave behind the online record of their ridiculous and sometimes scandalous behavior. Prospective employers and even potential husbands or wives will eventually see these photos and videos, which could affect their futures.
The good news is that, in today’s Internet age, fame and fortune are easily attainable for otherwise unqualified kids, but the bad news is that their narcissistic(自恋的)addictions to social media will interfere with learning knowledge and real-life skills, leaving an entire generation of wired youth with absolutely no other alternative once their online followers forget about them.
28.What does the underlined word “wither” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Fade. B.Prosper.
C.Tease. D.Please.
29.Why does becoming an online celebrity rise among the youth
A.Because it just needs self-confidence.
B.Because they are skilled at performance.
C.Because they don’t concentrate on academics.
D.Because it is a possible chance to get them ahead.
30.What suffering may so-called stars face
A.They may lose their wealth.
B.They may get their future ruined.
C.They may be sick of people’s concern.
D.They may be laughed at by their future employees.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Times change nothing.
B.Qualifications bring fortune.
C.A trend can stimulate learning.
D.An addiction can affect a whole generation.
D
The hour of sleep lost in the change to Daylight Saving Time(DST), the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months to make better use of natural daylight, appears to reduce people’s possibility to help others, the researchers found. Specifically, they showed that average donations to one U. S.-based nonprofit organization dropped by around 10 percent in the workweek after the time change compared with four weeks before and after the change.
To test the link between sleep loss and generosity, Ben Simon of the University of California, Berkeley and her team first brought 23 young adults into the lab for two nights and had the participants sleep through one night and stay awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed an altruism questionnaire(利他主义问卷)rating their likelihood of helping others. For instance, participants rated on a scale from 1 to5, with 1 for being least likely to help and5for most likely, whether they would give up their seat on a bus to a stranger or offer a ride to a coworker in need. Roughly 80 percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived(缺觉的)than when rested. The researchers then compared each participant’s brain activity in a rested state with that in a sleep-deprived state, which showed that sleep deprivation reduced activity in a network of brain regions linked to the ability to empathize(共情)with others.
In another experiment, the researchers found 136 participants online and had them keep a sleep record for four nights. The researchers found that the more time participants spent being awake in bed, a measure of poor sleep, the lower their altruism questionnaire scores. That drop in altruism held true both when comparing individuals to themselves and when averaging scores across the group. Focusing on DST, the researchers looked at charitable donations from 2001 to 2016 to a charity: in the workweek following the time change, total donations, which typically averaged roughly $82 per day, dropped to about$73 per day.
Scientists say the result tells a more complex story about how inefficient sleep affects decisions on helping others. But unlike many other social problems — think about climate change — this one has a ready solution if you think about promoting sleep.
32.What did the first experiment require participants to do
A.Work extra hours.
B.Do good every day.
C.Have different hours of sleep.
D.Rate other participants’ behaviors.
33.What can be inferred about the second experiment in Paragraph 3
A.Its result stands in every way.
B.DST does more harm than good.
C.Altruism can be developed during long sleep.
D.Its application goes beyond one’s expectation.
34.How did the scientists see the impact of sleep deprivation
A.It has drawn wide attention.
B.It’s a serious social problem.
C.It’s a short-term phenomenon.
D.It can be solved by individuals themselves.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Sleep Shapes Social Experiences
B.Lack of Sleep Reduces One’s Kindness
C.Daylight Saving Time Affects Sleep
D.The US Finds Ways to Raise Donations

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going. 36 This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they’re often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing(重塑)thinking. 37 Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. 38 Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
39 Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they’re necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes.
40 The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies— anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A.Be realistic about availability.
B.In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
C.It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
D.Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
E.Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.
F.There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
G.This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.

Her name was Ms. Finch. She was very short, with short brown hair and unique eyeglasses that seemed too small for her tiny face. Despite being old enough to retire, her temper made it clear she wasn’t planning to do so quietly. Nelson Brian felt exhausted as he sat in one of the hard-backed chairs in the room, worn down by Ms. Finch’s intense stare.
Ms. Finch sat on the edge of her chair, her brown shoes barely touching the worn carpet. In a rude tone, she remarked. “Mr. Nelson, your file says you’ve been to four job interviews in the last ten days, but you haven’t managed to secure a job. If today’s appearance is any indication of your commitment to your job search, it’s no wonder Flowers on First didn’t want to hi re you as a delivery driver.”
A wave of sickness accompanied the heat spreading through Brian’s body. He knew going straight from soccer practice to the career consulting session was a mistake, but he thought showing up in non-slip shoes would be better than being late. As he tried to explain, Ms. Finch pressed her lips together in annoyance.
“I’m not interested in excuses, Mr. Nelson,” she said. “But I’d like to know why someone with your grade point average and an extensive list of after-school activities is struggling to find a part-time job.” Brain’s commitment to extracurricular(工作之外的)activities and good academic standing shifted Ms. Finch’s perspective, realizing he possessed qualities that could contribute positively to the workplace.
Ms. Finch’s question brought back the helpless feeling that plagued(折磨)Brian during his failed interviews. “I-I-I am too nervous to say a word,” he stammered(结结巴巴地说), keeping his eyes on the carpet. Brian’s openness in explaining himself and admitting he was nervous made Ms. Finch understand him better.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms. Finch shook her head. Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms. Finch nodded understandingly.

第一节(满分15分)
One possible version:
Good morning, everyone!
I am honored to have the opportunity to deliver a speech on patriotism.
Patriotism, to me, is not just about waving flags or singing the anthem; it’s commitment to making a positive difference to our country. To show our love for our country we can start by loving our school. Respecting our school’s values and rules is one way to demonstrate patriotism. Besides, we can actively participate in patriotic activities organized by our school. Furthermore, let’s maintain a clean school environment and take care of school facilities.
I believe if everyone can do their bit, we’ll have a better school and build a stronger nation. Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms. Finch shook her head. Ms. Finch made a brief mark on her clipboard. She looked at him curiously, her voice softening. “I’m not so different from you, Mr. Nelson. I, too, can be easily nervous in stressful situations. I apologize for being rude about your situation.” Then, Ms. Finch, showing sympathy toward Brian, finally recognized his genuine effort and commitment to the job search, despite his initial appearance.
Paragraph 2:
Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms. Finch nodded understandingly. “Being on time is crucial, Mr. Nelson, and I commend you for that. But may I suggest keeping alternative clothing on hand for such occasions Excellent. Now, let’s get to work.” Ms. Finch offered encouraging words as they discussed his interview techniques and potential areas of improvement. She emphasized the importance of confidence and the impact of personal presentation during job interviews. And Brian was relieved and grateful to hear these, realizing that many teenagers fail in job interviews because they don’t put in the effort to present themselves professionally.

W: Do you enjoy watching comedies Then why not come and see what’s happening at Comedy Hour Comedy Hour owns comedy clubs in several countries that are run just for people aged 13-20.They’re just as familiar with working in adult comedy clubs as they are working with children. The Comedy Hour company was set up by John Winterson. In fact, his act quickly became so popular that he soon found lots of other comedians who wanted to join his company.
If you’re having a party at home, Comedy Hour can come and perform for you there at the party. Your very own comedian will also help you to tell your guests some jokes and silly stories and they can join in, too, if they want. It’ll be fun and very different from any party you’ve ever had before.
Here at Comedy Hour, it’s not just about the adults telling jokes. We also offer young people the chance to perform. But we’ve yet to find someone who can do that without preparation, so we’ve set up the world’s first Comedy Classes to teach young people how to tell jokes on stage. At the moment our classes are only monthly, but we’re planning to start a number of others over the coming year.
So what are you waiting for Come and join Comedy Hour.
