Frederick McKinley Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 17, 1893. By the time Frederick was 7 years old, his father sent young Jones to live with a priest (牧师) in Kentucky. At the age of 11, Jones ran away to feed himself. He returned to Cincinnati and worked as an entrance guard in a garage where he developed a skill for automobile mechanics. He became a leader of the shop. In 1912 he landed in Hallock, Minnesota, where he obtained a job doing mechanical work on a farm.
Jones had talent for and an interest in mechanics. He read extensively on the subject and educated himself in his spare time. By the time he was twenty, Jones was able to get an engineering license in Minnesota. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I (WWI) where he was often called upon to make repairs to machines and other equipment.
After the war, he returned to the farm. It was on the Hallock farm that Jones educated himself further in electronics. He built a transmitter (发射机) for the new radio station to broadcast its programming. He also developed a device to combine moving pictures with sound.
Jones continued to expand his interests in the 1930s. He designed and patented (获得专利) a portable air-cooling unit for trucks carrying perishable (易腐烂的) food. Forming a partnership with Numero, Jones founded the U. S: Thermo Control Company. The company burgeoned during World War II, helping to preserve blood, medicine and food.
Over the course of his career Jones received more than 60 patents. He was recognized for his achievements both during his lifetime and after his death. Jones died of lung cancer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 21, 1961. He was chosen into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in 1977. In 1991, then—President George H. W. A Hollywood-quality movie may soon be only a few text prompts (提词) away. OpenAI last week revealed its latest, world-shocking technology: a text-to-video app called Sora that can produce photorealistic short videos lasting up to a minute.
The company hasn’t released Sora to the public yet, but the artificially generated videos it created for its demonstration were stunning. In one, the detailed prompt involves people walking through Tokyo while cherry blossoms are flying through the wind. The resulting video was a mind-blowing exercise in world-building, showing a couple walking in a detailed streets cape that is unmistakably Tokyo. Perhaps even more awe-inspiring is that Sora does not merely produce videos that fulfill the demands of the prompts. It improvises (即兴创作) in a way that suggests a talent for storytelling.
“Good heavens,” said Loz Blain in New Atlas. “We’d better try to deal with the speed at which this technology is advancing. The wheel, the steam engine, the airplane, the computer, the Internet... None of them ever sped up’ like this. If you look closely, you can tell that these very short videos aren’t real. But it’s impossible to say whether this technology is nearly as good as it’s going to get Videos made a year ago, using the AI tool Mid journey, couldn’t even display the correct number of fingers on a hand. But Sora now creates a world as you describe. Get ready for the next wave of ‘AI disruption (颠覆)’ as Sora shakes the entertainment industry.”
Yet costs are increasing, too. Estimates of the cost of building out AI systems have varied from hundreds of billions to 7 trillion dollars over the coming years. Where’s the money going to come from With OpenAI’s current valuation approaching $100 billion, traditional investors are largely priced out. Governments may be one possible solution, but many are likely to have national security concerns about backing this technology.
Such concerns are well founded. It’s simply impossible to know how these systems will be misused until they’re out in the wild. While OpenAI has the ability to prevent violent pictures, disinformation is much harder to police. Faked videos could sow confusion and chaos. At the very least, OpenAI should wait until after November to bring Sora to the public.
53. Why does the author mention the resulting video in paragraph 2
A. To show Sora has a better gift for writing stories.
B. To show Sora has the potential to create great videos.
C. To show the video is as good as a Hollywood-quality one.
D. To show the video is a stunning result of human wisdom.
54. What is Loz Blain’s attitude towards the future of Sora
A. Dismissive. B. Unclear. C. Optimistic. D. Objective.
55. What can be inferred about the technology from the last two paragraphs
A. It is bound to cause confusion and chaos.
B. Traditional investment in in as a possible option.
C. Governments are doubtful about its development.
D. Possible problems related to its use remain to be seen.
56. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce Sora as a rising star of video-making.
B. To criticize Sora’s troublesome effects on public safety.
C. To advertise Sora as an admirable genius at storytelling
D. To popularize Sora's potential as promoter of film industry.
D
Whether playing tricks or holding funerals in the wild, crows have surprised the public with their unexpected capabilities. But their “intelligence” knows no bounds. A new study published in Current Biology revealed for the first time that crows can use statistical logic to solve problems.
Crows have a large brain for their size and a particularly noticeable forebrain, associated with statistical and analytical reasoning in humans. “In our lab, crows have shown complicated numerical competence and careful consideration during decision-making,” said Dr. Melissa Johnston, a fellow at the University of Tübingen. In her recent work, Johnston and her team pushed these abilities to a new extreme, testing statistical reasoning.
In the experiment, two crows were first trained to peck (啄) at various images on touchscreens to earn food treats; and gradually they had to choose between two of these images, each corresponding to a different reward probability. “Crows were tasked with learning rather abstract quantities and then applying that combination of information in a reward maximizing way,” Johnston detailed. Over 10 days of training and 5,000 trials, the two crows managed to pick the higher probability of reward, showing their ability to use statistical inference. To researchers’ much surprise, even after a month without training, the crows still perform well every time.
Statistical reasoning involves using limited information about a situation to draw conclusions and make decisions. People unknowingly use such cognitive ability every day. When we select cafes for social meetups, our brains automatically weigh collected statistics from past observations and favor the one more capable of meeting needs. Similarly, crows remembered and analyzed the connections between the images and the reward probabilities to make themselves get the most treats possible.
Crows once symbolized misfortune and death, causing them disliked even killed by people. Actually, they are among the few animals to adapt to urbanization successfully due to underestimated intelligence. “I think these studies do help change public views and improve our relationship with these lovely animals,” Johnston stated.
57. What makes crows’ intelligence possible
A. Their limitless abilities of tricks.
B. Their social leaning in the wild.
C. Their physical structure of brains.
D. Their training received in the lab.
58. Which of the following best describes the research process in paragraph 3
A instruct, task, and retest. B. Train, perform, and record.
C. Assume, prove, and reflect. D. Prepare, teach, and examine.:
59. How does the author explain statistical inference in paragraph 4
A. By sharing a personal experience.
B By quoting a previous study.
C By making a detailed comparison.
D. By using a common example.
60. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Food Prize Competition: Crows Choosing Rewards
B. Urban Bird. Survival Strategies: Living with People
