When Meglan Enz was 10 years old, she decorated her bedroom walls with posters, stickers, and pages tom from magazines of anything tied to the military. Then one day there was a fire in her grandparents’ house on the family farm in Hollister, California. Among the firefighters, there was a woman. Her head was covered with a helmet and self-contained breathing apparatus (设备). And she carried different tools. Enz was shocked.
“They let you do that ” the young Enz asked as the female firefighter approached. “You’re actually a firefighter ” “Yes,” she responded. “And I hope one day, you’ll think about it because we need a lot more women in the fire service.” And with that, the woman planted a seed in Enz’s young mind. Enz is now in her third season with CAL FIRE (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection).
While the data about the number of women in CAL FIRE only dates back to 2019, they account for about 5.5 percent of the 8,300 workforce. The job is hard for everyone — male or female. Battling wildfires requires both physical and psychological (心理的) strength. Climate change has created increasingly dry conditions across California, which has led to a rise in the intensity (强度) and time of the fires spreading across the state. Fire season now runs for as long as 10 months out of the year.
When Enz thinks back to that interaction she had as a child with the female firefighter, she realizes that moment has never left her. Recently, Enz was coming off a fire line when she met a six-year-old girl, who was very excited about seeing a female firefighter. “This is so cool,” the girl said as she looked up at Enz. Enz realized she had grown into that stranger who changed the course of her own life.
4. What caused Enz to change her career goal
A. A teacher’s guidance on her career. B. Her interest in collecting magazines and posters.
C. Her childhood experience of fighting a fire D. A female firefighter’s encouraging words.
5. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A Wildfires are becoming more serious nowadays.
B. Female firefighters face more challenging tasks.
C. CAL FIRE has caught young firefighters, attention.
D. California has taken effective measures to control wildfires.
6. How did Enz react when hearing the little girl’s words
A. She was concerned about her talking to strangers.
B. She decided to change people’s attitudes to her profession.
C. She felt proud to influence others in a positive way.
D. She was eager to make more contributions to society.
7. Which of the following can best describe Enz
A. Responsible and generous. B. Determined and inspiring.
C. Considerate and sincere. D. Independent and organized.

School uniforms are traditional in Britain. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion and they feel that they belong to a group. Some people believe that a school uniform can help students pay attention to schoolwork. But some schools in Britain and other countries are starting to drop the traditional uniforms.
An Australian school has decided to drop its traditional school uniform, hoping new sportswear will encourage students to take part in more activities. School headmaster Elisabeth Lenders said the uniform change had been in the works for several years. “We decided that in 2018-2019,” she said. “The importance is clear: to make young people live happy, healthy lives.”
Ms. Lenders said World Health Organization research reported 90 percent of young Australians and New Zealanders were not getting the minimum daily levels of activity they needed in order to lead a healthy life.
As well as the new uniform, she said the school would change timetables to make sure there would be chances for students to take part in physical activity every day.
Ms. Lenders said in the past, a uniform was about all looking the same but in the 21 st century it was important for students to be able to choose clothes that they liked.
And this Australian school had made an online survey about the uniform change and had received great support from parents and students. Tara, mother of Ava in Year 7, said it was a great move from the school. “These are the challenges of our time, and we want young people to think about them,” she said. “It is bigger than just throwing out the old uniform. It’s about what the role of education is about. And for me, it’s helping young people to live a happy, healthy and productive life.”

A. physical activity B. uniform change C. happy life D. students’ health

A. helps students to live a healthy life B. gives students a sense of belonging
C. teaches students to dress fashionably D. helps students to pay attention to study

A. Students there may wear different kinds of clothes.
B. It’s not clear whether the change is good for students or not

11. Where is the text probably from

Timing 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission any more. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While currently the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree.
While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned ±at when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal-cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify (使…具有资格) you as an adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.
12. What is the author’s attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood
A. Cautious, B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. positive
13. How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals
A. By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B. By collecting information from other parts of die body.
C. By sending instructions to different regions of the brain.
D. By transporting sensed emotions and making records.
14. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A. Give a definition of adulthood. B. Stress the importance of family support.
C. Prove not everyone lives a fortunate life. D. Show opinion on becoming an adult is divided.
15. What does die underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Families. B. Children in the foster system.
C. Workers in the foster system. D. Adults.
