Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, now 46, started writing about the challenges of work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis. She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary.
Peralte created a website for people to add their names to the queue. Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fill as many pages as she wishes. Then she should mail it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides. So far, more than 2, 000 women from 30 countries have joined in.
The diary reached Colleen Martin in Florham Park, New Jersey, in November2020. “I had just recently lost my brother. By the time I actually got it and wrote in it, it was much more of a relief, ” she says. Adding to the diary, she says, helped her look for meaning and “the growth and development that occurs in terrible times. ”
Martin shipped off the diary to the next person, and Dior Sarr, 35, received it at her home in Toronto just before the new year. “I wrote about my ambitions (抱负) , my goals and how I wanted to step into the new year,” she says, “It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn't know them at all. ”
Like many of the women who wrote in her diary, Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her idea, Peralte says, has had a great effect on her and, she hopes, the other women who were part of it.
14. Why did Peralte start the project “The Traveling Diary”
A. To become famous online. B. To offer women an emotion outlet.
C. To meet more people on the Internet. D. To popularize medical knowledge of pandemic.
15. What did Colleen Martin get from writing the diary
A. Achieving her goals. B. Receiving timely help.
C. Promoting personal growth. D. Improving her writing skills.
16. What does the underlined word “bond” in the last paragraph mean
A. Connection. B. Competition. C. Impression. D. Need.
17. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Power of Unity B. Warmth in a Global Crisis

Have you ever heard of the classic Marshmallow (棉花糖) Test It's a fun experiment where kids are given a marshmallow and told that they can eat it now or wait a bit and get two marshmallows later. Some kids eat the marshmallow right away, while others struggle to wait for the two marshmallows.
Interestingly, when the researchers followed up with those kids later in life, they found that those who waited longer for the two marshmallows would perform better in school, and even have better health. This made people think that waiting is a sign of self-control.
But a new study in 2022 by scientists raised an interesting question: is this behavior really about self-control, or is it about the culture we grow up in In the United States, people usually don't wait for everyone to be served before they start eating In Javan. however, there is a tradition of waiting until everyone is served. This cultural difference made researchers wonder if Japanese kids would wait longer in the marshmallow test compared to American kids. Surprisingly, the study found that Japanese kids did wait longer—about 15 minutes on average, while American kids waited for about 5 minutes.
Then, the researchers did another follow-up experiment. They looked at a different situation: opening gifts. In the United States, gifts are often saved for special events like birthdays and Christmas, when kids have to wait to open their gifts. In Japan, gifts are given more often, and kids usually open them right away. This is a powerful result because it shows the importance of culture and habit in shaping the way how children act.
So, whether you can wait for that second marshmallow might not just be about self-control—it could be about the culture you' re part of!

B. Self-control is important for children's growth.
C. Gift-giving habits influence children's conduct.
D. Japanese kids are more patient than American kids.
21. Which of the following can be the best title for the text

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding (费力的) , she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 cálories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1, 000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1. 4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
22. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A. They must run long distances. B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules. D. They are good at swinging their legs.
23. What advantage does race walking have over running
A. It's more popular at the Olympics. B. It's less challenging physically.
C. It's more effective in body building. D. It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
24. What is Dr. Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking
A. Getting experts’ opinions. B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Doing regular exercises.
25. Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Tolerant.

A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with bad guys.
This doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with the bath water, though. Technology has changed the way we make friends, but the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. 30
