Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights— which we returned on at the start of November— are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 p.m. , in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 p.m.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights— from 11 a. m. until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine— with over 40 different varieties there.
21. Why are Oxford Street’s festive lights just on for 8 hours a day this year
A. The quality of these lights is not good.
B. The public don’t like these lights.
C. The country expects to differ from previous years.
D. The government wants to save energy.
22. In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit Of Christmas
A. Kew Gardens. B. Oxford Street. C. Covent Garden. D. Regent Street.
23. What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden
A. See snow day and night. B. Take a shower.
C. Enjoy many different kinds of wines. D. Pick out the favourite lights.

SAREK NATIONAL PARK—
EUROPE’S HIDDEN NATURAL TREASURE
A Summer Where the Sun Never Sleeps
I wake up to the sound of the wind buffeting the cloth of my tent. Even though the sun is brightly shining, telling whether it is morning or night is impossible. I’m above the Arctic Circle, where in summer the sun never sets. Checking my watch, I see that it is 7:30 a. m. I leave my tent and walk over to the mountain edge. Spreading out before me, branches of the Rapa River flow through the valleybelow. I’m in the remote far north of Sweden in Sarek National Park, a place with no roads or towns.
A Land of Mountain and Ice
Sarek’s mountains used to be covered by vast sheets of ice. Around 9,000 years ago, this ice melted, leaving behind about 100 glaciers. Soon after, reindeer began to arrive. Following the reindeer were the Sami people, who made this territorytheir home. Getting here is quite difficult, so apart from the Sami very few people have ever seen Sarek. In 1909, Sarek was made a national park in order to keep the land in its natural state. Though the Sami are allowed to continue their traditional way of life in the park, no one else can live here, and all new development is banned within park boundaries. At the far side of the valley, an ancient Sami cottage is visible. Close by, there are a few reindeer feeding on grass.
Man at Peace with Nature
For hundreds of years, looking after reindeer was a way of life for the Sami. They used the reindeer’s meat for food, their bones for tools, and their skin for making clothes and tents. Since reindeer were always on the move, the Sami would pick up their tents and accompany them. Today, most Sami have houses in villages near Sarek and live a modern life just like their neighbours. But every spring, a small number of Sami still follow their reindeer into the valleys of Sarek, living in tents or old cottages and enjoying their traditions. I am not a Sami, but in Sarek I’ve adopted some of their habits. For example, this morning my breakfast is flat bread warmed over a fire, dried reindeer meat, and some sweet and sour berries that I found growing near my tent.
A Land of Adventure
After breakfast, I pack my bag and set out again. Since I must carry all of my food and supplies with me, my bag weighs about 30 kilograms. If today is anything like yesterday, it will be full of sweat and hard work as I hike over this difficult land to my destination on the other side of the valley. However, I cannot complain. Being in such a beautiful and wild place makes me feel blessed to be alive. Here I am, alone under this broad sky, breathing the fresh air, and enjoying this great adventure. What could be better

A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws.
“We had an ongoing project for many years focused on ice,” said Ali Dhinojwala, who took part in the research. “We were looking at the friction (摩擦力) of materials because our national partners need to develop tyres with a strong grip on the road in ice and snow conditions.” The team turned to nature for inspiration, thinking that evolution might have already solved the problem in a way that could be copied with technology. The obvious place to look was polar bears— specifically the tiny bumps (凸块) on the surface of their paw pads— to find out what effect they have on the animals’ ability to move quickly across icy and snowy area.
To do this, the team gathered samples (样本) of polar bear paw pads, as well as samples from brown bears and American black bears (two species closely related to polar bears) and sun bears (a distantly related species, typically found in Asia). The team imaged the samples using a scanning electron microscope, produced 3D-printed copies and then tested them in snow in the lab.
They found that the tiny structures on the polar bear paw pads were taller, which gave them better friction on the snow, even though polar bears have smaller pads compared to other bears.
The team now wants to look into other factors that may have an effect, such as the patterns and shapes of the tiny structures. “If you look at snow tyres, you’ll see that they do have some deeper treads (外胎花纹), but this research could also show various ways to design them that could have a larger impact,” said Dhinojwala.
28. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Tiny bumps. B. Polar bears. C. Snowy roads. D. Paw pads.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The finding of the research. B. The background of the research.
C. The comparison of different bear pads. D. The differences of samples in the lab.
30. What can we infer from Dhinojwala’s words in the last paragraph
A. Snow tyres that have deeper treads can be safe enough.
B. Different treads might be designed on the snow tyres.
C. The researchers should have turned to other bears for inspiration.
D. The design of snow tyres requires no further improvement.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. An Ongoing Project Focused on Ice B. An Easier Way to Drive in the Snow
C. A New Research on Polar Bear Paw Pads D. Snow Tyres Based on Polar Bear Paws

San Francisco’s waterfront (海滨) is on the National Register of Historic Places for good reason.
Its beautiful old landmarks, like the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge, have been seen in many books, TV shows and movies— from the stories and novels of Jack London to the 1970sTV series The Streets of San Francisco. The future of San Francisco’s waterfront, however, isn’t safe.
In 2016, the National Trust for Historic Preservation put part of the city’s shoreline on its list of the US’s most endangered historic places, in part because of the threat of sea level rise. The waterfront landmarks of many cities are under increasing threat from floods and rising sea levels brought on by human-driven climate change. St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy and the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles face similar challenges to San Francisco.
“The whole issue of climate change and historic preservation intersects (交织) right at the waterfront,” said Elaine Forbes, director of the Port of San Francisco. As she watched the boats come and go on a sunny afternoon, Forbes said, “Sea level rise hasn’t historically been as much of a threat to San Francisco as major earthquakes.” However, that’s changed. Parts of the main road that runs along the waterfront have flooded from heavy rains in recent years. The state estimates (预估) the water could rise up to about two and a half feet above its present level by 2060, and possibly up to seven feet by the turn of the century.
Now, San Francisco is considering measures to save its historic shoreline. But the growing magnitude (震级) and frequency of the climate-related threats, the high costs and effort needed in saving heritage sites, and competing ideas about what’s worth saving and what isn’t, can make it hard for cities to know what to do first.
32. What is San Francisco’s waterfront famous for
A. Crowded beaches. B. Old landmarks. C. Comfortable climate. D. Beautiful bridges.
33. What challenge is the waterfront facing
A. The threat from rising sea levels. B. The loss of public support.
C. The competition from other cities. D. The influence of tourist activities.
34. Why is the earthquake mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To stress the seriousness of sea level rise.
B. To give an example of existing threats.
C. To show the difficulty in the waterfront protection.
D. To compare different types of natural disasters.
35. What can be known from the text
A. Threats have been removed. B. Heritage sites are in ruins.
C. Solutions are under consideration. D. The shoreline has been flooded.

Sports is getting its increasing popularity among teens. Many teens in high school want to try sports because they think it will make them popular. 36 Here are some of them.
With electronic products becoming more popular, it has become much easier for teens to be by themselves. Kids used to hang out around the town; now they just sit at home. 37 In this case, they’ll learn how to interact and work as a team— something they’ll find useful later in life.
38 Playing a team sport will help your teens get some exercise to lose weight or get into shape. What’s more, these days, it is becoming harder to show your teens that you love and support them. A great way to do this is by showing up while they are playing games. You can also help them practise, and help with the team fund-raising. These are also great ways to spend time with your kids and talk to them.
You may think your teens aren’t good enough to make their school team. 39 There are plenty of other places besides the school to play team sports. You can also check other “for-fun clubs”. You could look into sports that you may not have thought of. If you do a little research, you are sure to find something your teens will enjoy.
Sports are a great way for your teens to get out of the house, get moving, make friends, and even get a scholarship to college. 40
A. Take it easy.
B. Sports help address teens’ overweight.
C. In my view, it is a waste of time and energy.
D. So why not talk to them about getting into sports today
E. However, there are other benefits your teens don’t realize.
F. How can we develop a hobby of doing sports from now on
G. Yet getting into a sport gives them a chance to go out and socialize.

All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can, so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she said, “We forgot something, Brad.” She ran to the fence and started sprinkling (洒) water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there ” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil.”
She stopped sprinkling. “My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it, the way you said.”
“But, Laynie—”
“How long does it take to grow a new pencil ”
I should have explained things right then, but I just said quietly, “Uh...I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted. She drew pictures with it all afternoon.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt, so I knew she’d just planted something. “What is it this time ” I asked.
“It’s Molly.” I gasped (倒吸气). Molly was Laynie’s goldfish! “She jumped out of her bowl again,” Laynie said. “Grandma said we didn’t find her in time.” Then Laynie picked up her little watering can and started sprinkling that spot. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad ” She knelt down to whisper, “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house. I sat down with my back to the fence and wondered what I should do then.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Maybe, I could put a live fish on the spot just before Laynie came along. Laynie buried Molly and planted some “forget-me-not” seeds on the grave (坟墓).

【文章大意】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家基于北极熊熊爪的构造设计新型雪地轮胎。
28. A代词指代题。根据第二段“The obvious place to look was polar bears— specifically the tiny bumps on the surface of their paw pads— to find out what effect they have on the animals’ ability to move quickly across icy and snowy area. (最明显研究对象是北极熊——特别是它们脚掌表面的小凸起——来发现它们对动物在冰雪地区快速移动的能力有什么影响。)”可知,它们指的是北极熊脚掌表面的小凸起对于动物在冰雪地区快速移动的能力的影响,推断处they指代的是选项“小凸起”。
29. A段落大意题。根据第四段“They found that the tiny structures on the polar bear paw pads were taller, which gave them better friction on the snow, even though polar bears have smaller pads compared to other bears. (他们发现北极熊脚垫上的微小结构更高,这使得它们在雪地上有更好的摩擦力,尽管北极熊的脚垫比其他熊小。)”可知,第四段主要谈到的是研究的发现。
30. 第一节
One possible version:
Dear Jim,
Sorry to hear that you are puzzled about some Chinese gestures, which is common for the foreigners.
In China, some body language is identical to yours, while some differs from yours. For example, we usually greet our guests by shaking hands. Some may favour a nod or smile, but try to avoid hugging, especially kissing on the cheek. In addition, we nod our heads to approve and shake our heads to say “no”. Of course, it is to show great respect for others that we bow.
I hope the information above will help you adjust yourself to your life in China and enjoy yourself forever.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Maybe, I could put a live fish on the spot just before Laynie came along. Or I could sneak a new fish into Molly’s bowl and just say that it grew. I sighed. I knew there was only one right thing to do. When I laid the short pencil, and crayons on the table, Laynie looked confused. Then I explained the whole story to her. “No!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. But the worst part hadn’t come yet. “Laynie,” I said softly. “Molly isn’t going to grow either.” All of a sudden, she burst into tears. I hugged her tightly and suggested, “How about a funeral for Molly ”
Laynie buried Molly and planted some “forget-me-not” seeds on the grave. She watered them every morning. One day I saw Laynie carrying her watering can to the corner of the yard. “I’m growing ‘basketballs’ for you,” she announced, sprinkling a new patch of dirt. When she was gone, I dug up the spot with my bare hands. The “basketball seeds” were small and light, and they smelled like oranges! When I finally stopped laughing, I replanted them. Then I headed for the house to explain gardening to Laynie one more time.

W: Not really. Anyway, I must go. I have to catch the last subway home.
(Text 3)
M: I heard there would be a power cut tonight.

(Text 6)
W: I wonder why The Sunflower went out of business. It got a great review in Dining Magazine and every timeI ate there, there was a big crowd.

M: Yes, there are so many factories. There’s probably a lot of air pollution, isn’t there
W: Yeah, and not much green area. But that’s life, I guess.

(Text 10)
It’s good to see people live longer lives. But how we can help people who live longer live better has been a big challenge. Now, a number of businesses are offering services specifically designed for the elderly. One of them is True Call. True Call is a UK telephone communication service that can block unwanted telephone calls. Businessman Robert Smith has set the system in his mother’s home, since a group of people had stolen her life savings through phone calls a few months earlier.
Another one called Red & Yellow Care is a health care service. According to the director Mike Hart, their staff is trained to be able to explain their service in a simple and clear way, and unafraid of repeating the information. All the training is to provide safer and friendlier service for the elderly.
Then there is Safeway, a supermarket chain. One of the staff, Martin Bateman says that he and his co-workers now ask older customers more frequently if they need help at the checkouts. These customers may not know what to do with the self-checkout machines. All in all, the elderly are gaining increasing attention from the society. They’ll be living longer and better.
