Now Isaac Winfield, a kind-hearted 11-year-old boy, needs to buy more sheds (棚) to store the donated items.
“We’d always donated to the local food banks, and during the pandemic, he helped deliver food packages to the needy,” said his mom Claire, who added that recently Isaac had moved to a specialist school that didn’t have a similar program, leaving him frustrated that he couldn’t continue to help people.
“But the tough boy didn’t stop. He said, ‘We’ll give them food at my house,” said Claire. “He used his own birthday money to launch a food bank service which he runs from his garden shed. He fills bags of groceries (食品杂货) and hands them out to the needy around his hometown.” His parents give him a lift at weekends, but sometimes it’s Isaac who takes the bags of groceries to people on foot. Those in need are also able to go to Isaac’s food bank shed, which is open round the clock, and help themselves.
“At the beginning, he put all the food he bought in a little greenhouse with some lights and started offering it from there,” Claire remembered. “Someone spotted it and put it on one of those Facebook community sites and it went mad. The greenhouse lasted four weeks before I had to go and get a shed because we ran out of room.” Now Isaac is planning to open his second food bank in the town and has a local charity sponsoring (赞助) him.
Isaac was born with a rare chromosome disease (罕见的染色体疾病), and the food bank has helped “massively” with his confidence, as he can’t read or write. “For his 11th birthday, he just wants to get as many donations in as possible to help as many people as he can,” said Claire. In 1879 Mark Twain wrote an idea he had for a story in his notebook: “A poor man was loaned a 1,000,000 note for 30 days and he got rich on it because nobody could change it.” In the following years, he thought of the idea occasionally, putting down the title as a reminder or outlining a related idea, but nothing came of it.
A decade later, financial problems at Charles L. Webster & Co., the publishing firm (公司) founded and owned by Twain, had become serious. The company’s balance sheet was destroyed by ongoing investments (投资) in a hopeless typesetting machine and by disappointing sales. To keep the company afloat, he had to continue investing his own money in it. Things didn’t get better.
In the summer of 1891, worried by the dwindling income and rising debts (减少的收入和增加的债务), Mark Twain and his family left their large house, sold the horses, laid off their servants, and took off for Europe so that the internationally celebrated author could cash in on his name abroad. In addition to writing travel articles for McClure’s Magazine and the New York newspaper The Sun, Twain earned money by giving readings in various European cities. Eventually, he earned enough to pay back all the debts.
While having an expensive lifestyle in Europe, dining with important persons, and enjoying the widespread attention of the media, Samuel Clemens, the man behind the personality known as Mark Twain, was very poor; the future that awaited him included the closure of his publishing firm and personal bankruptcy (破产). As a virtually penniless man everyone assumed was rich, he doubtlessly realized the absurdity (荒唐) of his situation and the time must have seemed right to take that idea of a million-pound note and turn it into a story about the nature of wealth. He finished the story while in Florence during the fall of 1892 and sent it off to the editors of Century Magazine.
28. What was Mark Twain’s idea for a story in 1879
A. A man develops a company from nothing.
B. A poor man becomes rich by working hard.
C. A man with a million pound loan becomes rich.
D. A wealthy man loses everything and becomes homeless.
29. What happened to Mark Twain’s publishing firm according to paragraph 2
A. It opened several overseas branches.
B. It got into financial difficulties.
C. It faced plenty of competition.
D. It published many bestsellers.
30. Why did Mark Twain travel to Europe
A. To experience a different lifestyle. B. To escape from paying his debts.
C. To sell his new books. D. To make money.
31. What inspired Mark Twain to complete the story occurring to him in 1879
A. His desire for wealth. B. The media attention he got.
C. The situation he found himself in. D. His meetings with important persons.

Child-focused financial tech services — apps and banks designed to educate and teach children about finance — are on a mission to educate the masses from a very young age. And they’re growing fast.
GoHenry has got a customer base of over 2 million in the UK and the US. Now, the firm is hoping to conquer continental Europe (欧洲大陆) with its acquisition (收购) of Pixpay, a leader in teen banking in France and Spain with nearly 200,000 members. “We’re hugely excited to help further our mission to make every kid and teen smarter with money.” Louise Hill, cofounder of GoHenry said. Launched in 2012, GoHenry is a financial education app and offers prepaid debit card (借记卡) targeted at 6-18 year-olds, featuring “gamified money lessons” with parental oversight (照管).
Pixpay, meanwhile, offers a replacement for banks for children young as 10. It offers them a Mastercard payment card and a mobile app, enabling them to pay, get paid, save money or even get discounts on their favourite things.
One of the many reasons for the success of the child-centred financial tech industry is its ability to keep up with the changing times. Children today are given easier access than ever to buying goods.
Hill said one of the key inspirations behind founding GoHenry was finding herself “trying to explain to my children at home that by clicking the download button on iTunes they were spending money”. “They just didn’t understand it, and the move to cashless payment and the popularity of online shopping has just made the problem worse.”
If left unaddressed, poor financial literacy (能力) caused by limited education can lead to money issues in the future. GoHenry and similar financial education services are, to some extent, filling the gap left by the lack of financial literacy caused by the British education system offering parents the tools to educate their children about the value of money.
32. What does GoHenry hope to do after buying Pixpay
A. Launch a financial education app for teenagers in the UK.
B. Offer more gamified money lessons to kids in the US.
C. Get to know about teen banking in France and Spain.
D. Have more young customers in Europe.
33. What can kids as young as 10 do with Pixpay
A. Design their own mobile apps.
B. Buy some things at a lower price.
C. Draw money from different banks.
D. Play games without their parents’ permission.
34. What made Hill start GoHenry
A. A family talk. B. A trip with her children.
C. An attempt to use iTunes. D. An online shopping experience.
35. What message is mainly shown in the last paragraph
A. Parents have to be educated properly.
B. Money issues are worsening day by day.
C. The British education system is a total failure.
D. Financial knowledge needs to be readily accessible.

As parents, we want our kids to be carefree for as long as possible. 36 Think again. Experts agree that by the time kids are tackling (应付) basic math at school, they’re ready to learn more about money. Teaching them the benefits of saving money from an early age helps set them up for a lifetime of financial security (安全).
The earlier kids start, the sooner they can make saving a habit. Spending is easy, but learning how not to spend money is hard. The earlier kids learn how to save money, the more it will become a part of their value system and a habit. 37
Saving money helps kids become self-reliant (自立的) and independent. It may be easier for kids to ask for some money, but do you know what feels better Not needing to ask for permission. 38 That’s a powerful feeling.
39 Discipline (自制力) and self-control can be difficult for anyone, especially when it comes to money. The fact is, we won’t always be able to afford the things we want right away — at least not without going into debt. But kids who learn self-control are less likely to have credit problems later in life.
Kids can practise having an emergency fund. 40 If kids are able to dip into (动用) their own emergency fund when life goes sideways, it can build the confidence needed to weather life’s surprises.
A. Why is saving money early important
B. Kids need to keep track of their own funds.
C. Kids aren’t ready to learn about saving money, right
D. Kids knowing how to save money are more likely to stay out of debt.
E. Good attitudes toward money mean having a little set-aside for the unexpected.
F. By saving money, kids will realise that they can get what they want by themselves.
G. Experts say kids tend to develop their financial habits between the ages of six and 12.

The Araguaia River is one of the biggest rivers in Brazil. It is home to thousands of animals, like bright blue and yellow macaws. River dolphins swim and play in the water, and there are many different coloured fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan walks along the river every day. But looking at the river makes him worry because there is trash (垃圾) everywhere. He sees plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food packages. The water looks dark and ugly.
At school, Rhenan asks about the dirty river. “You wouldn’t want trash in your house,” says his teacher. “Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It doesn’t seem right to him that this big and powerful river is filled with trash. “It’s hurting the animals in my area,” he thinks. “And it’s also hurting the families who live here.” Then Rhenan has an idea.
The next morning, Rhenan talks to his mother about his plan for the river. He wants to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all work together, they could clean up the river! Rhenan’s mother loves his idea. “I believe the most important thing for you, Rhenan, is learning how to change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever.” she says. She tells him she will help him along the way.
The next day, Rhenan goes to the police department. Next he goes to the Mayors office (市长办公室). He visits offices, businesses, and other schools.
