Depths of our Earth hold great wonders. Below we explore four deepest places on Earth.
Veryovkina Cave, Georgia
Its entrance is located 2,285 meters above sea level. In 2018, scientists reached its bottom at 2,212 meters down. They squeezed through tiny openings to get from one cave to another. Rockfalls and floods waited secretly at every turn. Scientists could develop new medicines from microorganisms found in cave samples. Caves also record ancient life and past climates.
The Mariana Trench, the Pacific Ocean
The Mariana Trench, with the maximum depth of 11,034 meters, is the deepest part of Earth’s surface. Pressure there is intolerable, but creatures like sea cucumbers (海参) still exist. Scientists exploring it can gain deeper insights into how plates (板块) move and why earthquakes and volcanoes occur.
The Dead Sea, the Middle East
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on land at about 1,400 feet (about 400 meters) below sea level. It’s nearly ten times saltier than ocean water, so you literally can’t sink in the Dead Sea! Scientists think it could go dry in a few decades. Despite its name, the Dead Sea holds life. A few kinds of algae (藻类) and bacteria love its salty water.
Lake Baikal, Russia
At the depth of 1,642 meters, Lake Baikal is the deepest inland body of water. The Baikal seal is the only known seal that lives in this world’s deepest freshwater lake. Scientists study the lake not only for the solid stuff beneath it that records climate history but because ifs in a zone where a plate is splitting apart, causing earthquakes.
21.What do we know about Veryovkina Cave
A.It was discovered in 2018. B.Its pressure is far from bearable.
C. It is risky to explore. D.Its samples are of little practical value.
22.Where should scientists go to better know earth movement
A. Georgia & Russia. B.Russia & the Pacific Ocean.
C. Georgia & the Pacific Ocean. D.The Middle East & Russia.
23.What do the four places have in common
A. They have some sign of life. B. They are over a thousand meters deep.
C. They are results of climate change. D. They are all below sea level.

In 1957 a group of physicists gathered in a lecture hall to be addressed by a Chinese American woman. As she told her recent experiment and its results, the response was dead silence for two minutes, then a thunderous applause continued for ten minutes. The woman was Chien-Shiung Wu, known as the First Lady of Physics, who transformed nuclear science through her work on the Manhattan Project and other groundbreaking experiments.
Born in 1912, Wu was unlike many Chinese women of her time, and received a formal education. Fascinated by new discoveries and the story of women scientists, she entered the university to study physics and began scientific studies.
It was a time of rapid change in both the field of physics and China. Domestic unrest and a bad relationship with Japan made life at home uneasy. With the help of an uncle, she immigrated to the United States for graduate school.
Wu planned to go to the University of Michigan, but a tour of the University of California, Berkeley—and word that a student center at Michigan did not allow female students to enter through the front door—changed her mind. At Berkeley Wu was visible for her gender and race, her male colleagues commenting as much on her appearance as her keen mind. She quickly gained a reputation and became an expert in the newly discovered phenomenon of nuclear fission (核裂变).
After graduation, she headed to Smith College to teach women physics. During World War Two Wu went to Princeton University, where she became the physics departments first female instructor. But shortly after her arrival, her career took an unexpected turn in 1944. She ended up joining the staff at Columbia University on a top-secret research program now known as the Manhattan Project.
24.Which word best describes the lecture in Paragraph 1
A. Boring. B. Humorous. C. Excellent. D. Common.
25.What inspired Wu to study physics
A. The formal education she received. B. The success of women scientists.
C. The background of her family. D. The rapid change in the field of physics.
26.What happened to Wu in America
A.She was looked down on at Berkeley.
B.She went to the University of Michigan at first.
C.She taught women physics at Princeton University.
D.She joined a top-secret research program at Columbia University.
27.Which of the following best describes Wu as a scientist
A. Modest and independent. B. Creative and warm-hearted.
C. Responsible and cautious. D. Committed and ambitious.

Yellowstone National Park is boiling. Scientists agree the Yellowstone super volcano is unlikely to blow anytime soon. Should it erupt, it would be a disaster. The eruption would shoot out enough rock and ash to cover most of the United States.
So in 2017, NASA scientists ran a thought experiment to see if they could stop a future super-eruption. The team came up with the idea of drilling a series of wells around the edge of the park and pumping cold water down into the hot rock. This would cool the boiling rock and prevent a disaster. As a bonus, the system would provide enough geothermal (地热的) energy to power the entire country. The idea, however, hasreached a standstill. Yellowstone and other national parks have long been protected from commercial energy development to ensure that these regions remain untouched.
Nowhere has geothermal energy had a greater effect on the environment than in New Zealand. Much like Yellowstone, the Wairakei Basin of the country was once a bubbling scene where 70 geysers periodically fired jets of water into the air. That is, until 1958, when a geothermal power plant was developed nearby. Today, Wairakei does not host a single geyser. The power plant destroyed all 70 of them, along with 240 hot springs.
Should a project like this take place at the edges of Yellowstone National Park, it could easily leave the surface features untouched and still drill deep enough to generate geothermal power. Indeed, that was NASA’s supposed solution.
But Richards does not like the idea. Even if a geothermal power plant did not destroy the region’s features—from geysers and hot springs to mud pots—the plant would not go unnoticed in such an untouched area.
28.Why did the NASA scientists carry out the study
A.To discover more clean and sustainable energy.
B.To estimate Yellowstone super volcano’s danger.
C.To seek how to prevent a future volcanic eruption.
D.To drill wells to provide easier access to hot water.
29.What does the underlined phrase “reached a standstill” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Come to a temporary stop. B. Won governmental approval.
C. Led to a major breakthrough. D. Aroused much public concern.
30.What happened to geysers in the Wairakei Basin since a power plant was built
A. They disappeared completely. B. They mixed with hot springs.
C. They became more powerful. D. They were put into better use.
31.Why does Richards disapprove of building a power plant there
A.It could destroy the geysers in the park. B.It would conflict with NASA’s solution.
C.It might result in violent volcanic emptions. D.It would hurt the original scenery of the park.

China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.“We’re no longer suffering from hunger,” 55-year-old Georges Smith, a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.
China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Georges, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.
In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation’s diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.
In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants, “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that it “can significantly reduce labour and other costs”. “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.
In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible (可行的).It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” he said.
After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.
32.What’s the attitude of African fanners about Chinese hybrid rice
A. Full of gratitude. B. A little skeptical. C. Extremely curious. D. Much disappointed.
33.What can we infer from what Wang Xuemin said
A.Chinese technology of hybrid rice can’t be applied in Africa.
B.Different technologies should be applied to different areas.
C.Chinese experts contribute to raising African living standards.
D.Chinese technology can be used all over the world.
34.How long did it take for the Nigerian farm to be a modem production centre
A. More than ten decades. B. Less than a year.
C. Over a decade. D. Less than ten years.
35.What’s the best title of the text
A.Africans Fight Food Shortage with Chinese
B.China’s Hybrid Rice Sows Hope for Africa
C.Chinese Hybrid Rice Research Has Not Been Open in Africa
D.The Sowing of Hybrid Rice Should Vary from Countries

Matilda Browne (1869-1947) was a successful artist in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, few people know her name or her art today.
Matilda Browne showed promising artistic talent early in her life. Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, she got an introduction to art by watching her neighbor, painter Thomas Moran. Her parents supported their budding young artist. 36 And it paid off. Matilda Browne participated in her first major exhibition when she was just twelve years old.
Browne loved to paint animals, especially cows and other animals. 37 Her bold brushwork gave her paintings a live appearance. Her style is best described as Impressionism.
Matilda Browne quickly became a respected and successful artist. Her list of honours opened doors that would have been otherwise inaccessible for a female artist of her time. As an adult, she moved to Connecticut, where she painted in Old Lyme. 38 She even had the honor of painting a door of their workshop. Some sources say that her good sense of humor helped her fit in with the boys, while others claim that her seriousness is what won them over. 39
Browne was a successful artist throughout her life. She won numerous awards and exhibited in many important shows. However, very few people know about her today. This is a more common story for female artists than one might think. So, why has Browne faded into being unknown 40 She was American, while books about American Impressionists tend to focus on the male artists.
A.She was the only woman accepted into the male artists’ circle there.
B.It was her artistic style that hadn’t aroused people’s interest.
C.Her impressive skill brought her under everyone’s notice.
D.She also painted many flowers in colorful garden landscapes.
E.It could result from her double minority — in gender and nationality.
F.Her mother took her to Europe for training while she was quite young.
G.Either way, her great skill as a painter made these other artists take notice.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she wrote an essay, showing she was mature (成熟的)enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone safe. You must silence it in public spaces. You must…” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s begging words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she yelled, checking all her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, but her phone was gone. Ava got into the car, her stomach felt twisted.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her thoughts going wild with what might happen. She could imagine her parents, disappointed feces and mean words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and walked home slowly, her heart heavy with what had happened.

Body language plays a big role in our daily communication because it helps toshow what we mean without using words.
Different cultures have different body languages. In some places, looking intosomeone’s eyes is a good thing, but in other places, it might not be polite. The “OK”sign made with your fingers is fine in many cultures, but it can be rude in others.
It is crucial to learn and use body language correctly. In this increasinglyconnected world, not only can it help us understand each other better, but can evenchange how people react to us.

The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew shehad to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trustthey had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a wave of guilt as she prepared to confess.“…I’ve lost my phone”, she murmured. Her father’s brow wrinkled. “Did it perhapsfall from your pocket during the movie ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Avaadmitted that she had forgotten to search thoroughly or seek help due to her panic, herparents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’llfigure this out together.
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception deskand asked for help. It turned out that someone had turned in the phone to the frontdesk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized toher father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father toldAva that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handledsituations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense ofresponsibility.” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As sheheld the phone, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.
