When Arsh was a young boy, his parents, Divya Pal and Sanjeev, signed him up for extracurricular activities such as piano, karate ( 空手道) and gymnastics, but he preferred art. When Arsh turned 8, he received a watercolor paint set as a birthday gift. He spent all his spare time painting. That's how he started painting.
Around the same time, Arsh often visited a local nursing home, where his mother works. Spending time there inspired him to start selling his art for a good cause. “I want to help people in need through my paintings,” he said.
And so began his fundraising program, which he called “Art by Arsh.” He sells his paintings at local art shows, restaurants and libraries, as well as on his Instagram account and Facebook page. He donated his first $1,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in 2018, and has since reached various other charities.
Arsh, now 12, mostly makes commissioned ( 委托创作的) pieces, and several of his customers have come back wanting more. That includes his neighbor, Jolene Schaver, who has five of Arsh's creations hanging in her home and has bought many more for friends and family. “I was amazed at how talented he was at such a young age, without any formal training,” said Schaver.
Along with selling his paintings to benefit nonprofit organizations, Arsh now also teaches art lessons at the local nursing home. And he thought about accessibility, and realized not all people have the resources ( 资源) to make art — which has the capacity to comfort and heal (治愈). “One of my future goals is to make art accessible for kids who want to express themselves,” Arsh said. He has already started offering free art lessons to local children, and he hopes to expand (扩展) his classes further in the future.

Brian and Brittany are both doctors, working in Boston.
“Most of the time we do a good job of being mom, dad, husband, wife, physician and human all at once,” Brittany said. “But we got to where we didn't feel like we could do the best for our kids at this time and have really good patient care.” So, the doctor couple sent their eight-year-old son and two-year-old daughter to Brittany's parents' home in Texas. Then they turned their living room into a research office and picked up extra shifts (轮班) to cover for their sick coworkers and care for COVID-19 patients. And now a month in, they still view their sacrifices ( 牺牲) and unwavering healthcare commitment (坚定的医疗奉献) as their medical calling.
“We threw ourselves heart and soul into work. We are making their absence mean something,” Brittany explained.
Both doctors know the reality that they too could become infected (感染) although they take all the necessary precautions (预防措施). Brittany said her fear has developed from being scared of the physical effects of the disease to now worrying about the emotional well-being of her patients and their families. Brian praised his wife for what she had done for patients. “She has sat by their bedside since the family can't be there, playing their favorite songs or whispering the names of their family members. That alone is so heroic.”
They both dreamed of contributing to the medical field from a young age. Now they have achieved their dream. They also thanked others fighting this fight with them. “It's the most beautiful and harmonious thing from a community and global standpoint,” Brittany said. “Everyone has a part to play no matter how small or non-medical. Those roles really add up and allow healthcare workers to do their job on the frontlines.”

Years ago, when I was newly single, I attempted to decorate a 10-foot Christmas tree to tell my children that despite the newly formed state of our family, life must go on. I hoped that we would be buoyed by the holiday decorations. But at midnight, something happened. Our not-so-little tree had lost its balance and fell to the floor.
Yes, it was only a tree, but I cried. I viewed the fallen tree as a symbol of the many losses I had experienced that year.
Later that day, I arrived home from work to find two men in my living room. They came to provide home repair service. One was up a ladder (梯子) fixing the fallen tree to the wall, while his assistant was trying to grout the tiles (给瓷砖勾缝). The two men understood the fallen tree represented something much greater, and they wanted to relieve my sadness by restoring ( 恢复) it. My eyes filled with tears for a second time that day. These two generous men could have been grouting tiles or relaxing at home, but there they were, wire and grout in hand, in a great act of kindness.
This sweet memory reminds me of how kindness can be a life-changing force.
There's an interesting phenomenon called the butterfly effect. It describes how the flap (拍打) of a butterfly's wing can lead to a hurricane in another part of the world. So it is with kindness. For example, a study in Science Daily showed that goodwill spreads quickly. One person's generosity will spread to three people; those three people will each pay forward the kind act to three others, benefiting nine in all; those nine will continue to multiply ( 成倍增加) the kindness. This helps create a kinder and gentler world.
In addition to the butterfly effect, studies also found that your kind acts can make you healthier. Good acts produce a chemical named oxytocin, which can speed wound healing, may slow the aging process, and cheer people up.
So please remember that always be ready to show your kindness.
32. What does the underlined word “buoyed” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Impressed.
B. Annoyed.
C. Encouraged.
D. Frightened.
33. What moved the author so much
A. The two men repaired her house for free.
B. The two men put up her fallen tree.
C. The two men cooked her a meal.
D. The two men bought her a gift.
34. What did the study in Science Daily find
A. People who do more acts of kindness feel happier.
B. Everyone should be treated with kindness.
C. Kind people always have more friends.
D. Kind acts can create kind acts.
35. What is paragraph 6 mainly about
A. The art of being kind.
B. The features of different kind acts.
C. The benefits of performing kind acts.
D. The process of creating a kinder world.

第二节(满分25分)

My mother was the oldest child in a family of four children. At the age of ten, my mother was charged with all the household responsibilities while her mother went to work. At a time when most children focused on themselves and their needs, my mother looked after the other children, cooked, and cleaned. My aunts and uncle remember that while they were growing up my mother was consistent (始终如一的) and strict with them, with a smile on her face and a song in her heart.
After working for a couple of years, my mother married my father, and started her own family. Her four children came every two years. In addition to working full-time, she managed to attend each child's school and sporting events, and keep us all on the straight and narrow.
Having learned about her hard childhood and knowing that my father was really her “fifth and worst” child, I decided that when I completed graduate school I would take my mother on the first of what would become our annual (一年一次的) mother-daughter trip. Since I landed a well-paid job, I told her to pick any place she wanted to go and I would make it happen. She had never been more than fifty miles from our home, so she was very excited.
For the first three years, we went to Bermuda, Arizona, and Charleston. However, during my fourth year after graduate school, I opened my own business, and I was very hard up. I didn't want my mother to know, so I didn't let on when she said she wanted to go to the Bahamas.
I searched for the least expensive way to make this trip happen and ended up with a “package” that included air tickets, food and hotel stays. Even now, when I think about that trip, I experience some discomfort. The old airplane was very tiny. We had to share the hotel room with local insects.
After a long flight and a terrible bus ride to our hotel, most passengers were tired and disappointed (失望的). However, my mother always kept a positive attitude.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Eric,
I'm writing to show my sincere appreciation for your timely help.
Last Friday, in PE class, I had a sudden stomach ache while I was doing warm-up exercises. It was you who first found me in trouble and sent me to the school hospital. I am now out of the hospital and well on the way to recovery. I'm lucky to have a classmate like you.
Thanks again!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
To make matters worse, we had to stand in a long line under the hot sun to get our room key. Since there was no place to store our bags, we carried our things along with us in the line snaking toward the front desk. Just when I thought things could not get worse, the late afternoon rains common to the Bahamas blew in. We all got wet and almost lost our enjoyment in travelling. Finally, I was at the end of my patience.
When I was complaining about the sudden rain, my mother looked at the swimming pool with a bright light in her eyes. With a quick kiss on my face, my mother walked over to the swimming pool, took off her glasses, and jumped in fully clothed, shoes and all, shouting “Yahoo!” “This is a great way to cool down!” I thought to myself. I followed my mum into the swimming pool, but I was smart enough to take off my shoes before I ran over to the pool and jumped in next to her. Several other people joined us in the pool.
