Still Miles to Go
My husband Tom came with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced hisretirement after working for the Postal Service for thirty-three years, But as time went by, I could tell thatTom had nothing to do at home.He began to pace like a Jion, glancing out the windows.
“I think I'll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion wouldcease circling, and I could be in peace. We kept our eyes open for job opportunities. A few days later, whenour car crept behind a school bus, I remarked “You could drive that bus,” He had driven us over themountains through rainstorms on winding roads, Behind the wheel,he seemed fearless. “Of course, I coulddrive that bus,” he answered back. “But could I drive it with forty-five children bouncing and yelling in the back ” We both laughed at the thought.
That bus became the bumblebee(大黄蜂) that buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off towork again, climbing behind the wheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must have attracted Tom because I overheard him on the phone with the transportation department. He was hired. The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. Driving the bus turned out rewarding, and Tom is blooming in his new role. I think he likes being the "big guy" on the road.
He is now “Mr.Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. When the pre-Kchildren climb aboard, he fastens the safety belt for them. He greets the children with high-fives. Then heleads them in a quick and fun activity, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye, teachers!” yells Mr.Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr.Tom then yells out the last two lines, and the children laugh and repeat at the top of theirlungs.

Summer sea ice in the Arctic could melt almost completely by the 2030s — roughly a decade earlierthan projected — even if humans cut back drastically on greenhouse gas emissions, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, also called a "blue ocean event", will happen when the sea ice drops below onemillion square kilometers, writes Jonathan Bamber, a professor of physical geography at the University ofBristol, in the Conversation.
Previous assessments using models have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissions scenarios by 2050. But researchers noticed differences between what climate models predicted about what would happen to sea ice and what they've actually seen through observations. “The models, onaverage, underestimate sea ice decline compared with observations," says Nathan Gillett,an Environmentand Climate Change Canada scientist.
Now, in a new study published in Nature Communications, Gillett and his teammates changed these models to more closely fit satellite data collected over the past 40 years. Using these adapted models, the researchers projected ice changes under different possible levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Their paper suggests that regardless of the emissions scenario, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next decade or two.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refrcezes during the winter, summer ice coverage has steadily been declining over the past few decades because of climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster itself — as ice disappears, it exposes more of the dark blue ocean, which absorbs more healand leads to more melting. This process has led to the region warming nearly four times faster than the resof the globe since 1979.
Sea ice decline could have disastrous consequences that extend to the rest of the planet, including sealevel rise and disturbance to weather patterns and ecosystems.Animals like polar bears and seals that relyon Arctic ice to survive could be placed at risk.
28.According to the new research.what will happen concerning summer sea ice in the Arctic
A.Its melting can be prevented in greenhouse gas emissions.
B.Its complete melting may occur earlier than expected.
C.Its vanishing once and for all will be in less than 10 years.
D.Its dropping will give rise to so-called “blue ocean event".
29.What effort did the researchers make after figuring out the problem of the previous assessments
A.They adapted the models to be consistent with the actual cases.
B.They collected satellite data over the past 40 years.
C.They abandoned the attempt to use models.
D.They predicted accurately ice changes in regions of the Arctic.
30.How is paragraph 5 developed
B.By giving definitions.
A.By listing statistics.
D.By analyzing cause and effect.
C.By making a comparison.
31.What message may the text be trying to convey to readers

If you're out for a run, what difference does it make if you're able to tough it out for another 50 seconds If you're less than a minute from the top of the hill, that extra time can make the differencebetween having reached your goal and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
How do you get those extra seconds of energy A research team at the Texes Tech Universitydeveloped a study to measure what effect listening to music would have on exercise tolerance. Theresearchers based the study on a stress testing. As part of the testing, they noted any changes in heart rateand blood pressure as participants underwent physically stressful exercise,
The tests were done on treadmills(跑步机), which increased in both speed and incline(坡度)throughthree stages. In the final stage, the treadmills moved at 10 miles per hour at a 14-percent grade. Most ofthese tests were designed to last up to 40 minutes. The average gym-goers lasted 30 minutes. For this studythey divided 127 participants into two groups. One listened to upbeat(快节奏)music, while the other grouphad earbuds in but did not listen to music.
The group that listened to music was able to outlast the non-music group by an average of 50.6seconds. Again, being able to go an extra minute may seem like a no-brainer ,but “after 30 minutes, youfeel like you are running up a mountain,so even being able to go 50 seconds longer means a lot,"said thestudy's lead author,Waseem Shami,MD.
The study has confirmed something runners and gym-goers have suspected for years: Listening tomusic during workout can be beneficial to your endurance." Our findings reinforce the idea that upbeatmusic can help you exercise longer and stick with a daily exercise routine," said Shami. When doctors arerecommending excrcise, they might suggest listening to music, too."
32.Why did Shami's team conduct the research
A.To test the effect of music on health.
B.To know the cause of failure in sports.
C.To improve runncrs'exercise tolerance.
D.To record the body change of participants.
33.What did the researchers learn about the Participants in the stress testing
A.They could run a little longer with music on.
B.They created a new record of indoor sports.
C.They ran much faster than average runners.
D.They all enjoyed extreme physical challenge
34.What do the underlined words“a no-brainer mean in paragraph 4
A.A dull activity.
B.A foolish action.
C.A demanding task.
D.An easy practice
35.What did Shami suggest us doing in the last paragraph
A.Developing a daily exercise routine.
B.Listening to music while working out.
C.Participating in physical stress testing.
D.Taking exercise as doctors recommend.

Three years ago. I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at VictorHarbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there wasrush driving to a new and unfamiliar clinic and getting used to the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting,I removed my three things:my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from my husband. I wrapped them in a tissue(纸巾)and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break,I noticed the wrinkled tissue and thought that it didn't look very neat anddropped it into the rubbish bin.I went about my duties and my day went on well; I met new patients andfelt that I had been productive and efficient.Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before Ireached my house,I noticed that I was missing my rings.I felt the heart in my body rose,my cheeksburning red.I went inside and tried to calm down.I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling inmy heart.I spent an hour or so making calls trying to follow the track of my rings. The first people I calledwas my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners.I got in touchwith a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic and she informed me that the bins had alreadybeen collected.
Heart broken,I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my mosttreasured rings my mother's wedding ring. Had it not been for my carelessness, all this would not havehappened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair.
