In all the time I’ve spent in China, I’ve had my share of emotional crises. I can’t remember which one it was in particular, but I do remember how my adopted “aunt” Li once took care of me, tucking (a被角) me up in an armchair in her Chengdu apartment, bringing me a cup of green tea, peeling and cutting fruit for me, chatting about unrelated matters as she prepared one of her wonderful Sichuanese suppers. Like many Chinese people, particularly those of the older generation, she didn’t show her love for me by hugging or requesting emotional outpourings, but through food and over-concern.
It took me a while to become used to this way of expressing affection. At first I found it brusque and bossy: “Have some porridge! Drink some soup! Put on some more clothes!” But over time I came to understand what it meant. I can always tell, now, when someone Chinese is becoming fond of me because they start to become over-worried about my physical needs, urging me to eat or drink, to wrap up warm, to rest. When serious-faced chef barks at me to have some more baozi for breakfast or Li presses me to have another mouthful of her red-braised pork, I know they are offering me the edible equivalent of a hug.
Food in China can mean many things. It is also art and craft and magic. It is the slices of fish that fall like snow from the knife of the chef, the slivers of meat that dance in the shimmering heat of the wok (炒菜锅), the grains of millet or rice that swell in the steamer. It is the employment of armies of microorganisms in the clay vat of jiang (酱菜缸) or the wine jar, the creating of a hundred flavors in a tiny kitchen, the transformation of natural raw materials into numerous forms. It is finding ways to generate delight in everything from a duck’s tongue to the peel of an orange. It is one of the supreme expressions of human wit and creativity.
Above all, it is what connects us and makes us human.
24. Why does the writer mention her mental distress at the beginning
A. To compare the difference in two cultures.
B. To introduce how Chinese express their love.
C. To highlight how fragile the writer used to be.
D. To remind readers of the writer’s homesickness.
25. Which of following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “brusque”
A. Abrupt and simple. B. Impolite and bitter.
C. Brave and direct. D. Demanding and abusive.
26. How does the writer develop paragraph 3 to further explain her idea
A. By making comparison. B. By offering more examples.
C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By classifying cooking methods.
27. What message does the author intend to convey through the text
A. Every region has its own specialty. B. Food is culture, and culture is food.
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. D. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
C
There comes a point when a thing becomes too much. It might be at the end of the meal when that final slice of pizza turns you from “comfortably full” to “ergh,” when the car karaoke goes from being huge fun to a throat-aching chore, or when you are dead drunk with friends who have invited you to do shots.
The fact that humans have unstoppable thirst and appetites is not new wisdom. It’s found in Ancient Greece and in most of the world’s philosophies today. But in the Swedish idea of lagom, it has been given fresh life. Lagom means trying to find moderation rather than constantly grasping for more, which stands in sharp contrast to the American culture.
There are two separate aspects of lagom. The first is a kind of social awareness that recognizes that what we do affects other people. If you take three cookies from the plate, two other people aren’t going to get one. The second, however, is a mental shift that finds contentment in satisfaction. Many of us have the idea that bigger means better, that a bank balance means status, and that excess means happiness. Lagom, though, is to enjoy the “just right”, appreciating that sometimes less really is more. After all, talking to a friend over a coffee is nice. But meeting with ten friends after ten coffees does not make things better.
So, how are we to apply lagom to our lives I’m sure your childhood is sprinkled with great holiday memories and brilliant getaways, but chances are that your fondest, deepest memories were those spent simply at home. You do not have to pay lots of money or travel for hours to have fun. A cheaply cooked meal and some old-worn pajamas are “just enough” to have fun.
There are other ways we can apply lagom, from how often we see our friends to how much we buy to living sustainably. But the most profound element of lagom is simply to rest and relax when a thing feels good. Simple pleasures do not mean simple humans.
28. What can be learned from paragraph 1
A. Appetite is hard to restrain. B. Friendship means a lot in our life.
C. Much time is spent on entertainment. D. Greed inevitably leads to destruction.
29. What does the American culture advocate based on the text
A. The pursuit of more wealth. B. The rejection of bare necessities.
C. The promotion of equal opportunities. D. The recognition of philosophers’ contributions.
30. According to the author, we can apply lugom to our lives by
A. doing shopping crazily on a bad day B. spending a marvelous holiday abroad
C. having a homely meal with our family D. chatting with ten friends after ten coffees
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Wisdom of Lagom: Redefining Philosophy.
B. Swedish Lagom: Moderation and Happiness.
C. Lagom and Social Awareness: Sharing and Caring.
D. Understanding Lagom: Heritage of Ancient Greece
D
It’s not easy being a customer service agent- particularly when those customers are so angry with a product that they want to yell at you down the phone. That’s why the Sonos, a maker of home-audio systems, hired Sierra, an Al start-up, to provide it with a customer service program powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI).
In recent years, the customer service industry has become famed for driving customers mad with its use of technology. Because it is expensive for firms to use humans to solve their customers’ problems, they make the process as inefficient as possible by forcing you to press an extremely confusing combination of numbers or chat with a bot that recites prepackaged responses.
Now cntrepreneurs are betting that generative AI can make it all less awful. Unlike the former, generative-AI bots (程序) do not echo routine responses to narrow questions. Instead, they create their own responses informed by the firms’ training materials and previous customer-service interactions.
That raises two tricky questions. Advocates for the technology say that customers will no longer have to wait endlessly and point out that programs will be fluent in many languages and have easier-to-understand accents than foreign call-center agents, Customers, though, are yet to be convinced: 64% of those surveyed by Gartner said they would prefer it if companies didn’t use AI for customer service, mostly because they worry it will make it even more difficult to reach a human. What is more, generative-AI bots have a tendency to project complete confidence in their responses even when they are wrong, which could cause chaos. Earlier this year Air Canada was forced to repay a customer who was incorrectly promised a discount by the airline’s AI chatbot.
A second question is what all this means for the call-centre agents. It is predicted that generative AI would lead to a 20%-30% reduction in customer-service jobs by 2026. For now, Mr Goeller says Clearsource is focused on using generative AI to help train its human agents. But he adds, “I would be putting my head in the sand if I said AI wouldn’t replace people.
32. How does generative Al differ from traditional customer service, according to the passage
A. It is curious and multilingual. B. It is intelligent and interactive.
C. It is polite and communicative. D. It is cost-effective and welcoming.
33. Why do most customers favor service agents instead of generative AI
A. They find it challenging to deal with.
B. They still value human-to-human contact.
C. They believe it will not fully deliver its promise
D. They worry about falling victim to its efficiency.
34. What can be inferred from the passage about generative Al in customer service
A. It struggles to bridge the language gap.
B. It becomes the major concern for service agents.
C. It is only problematic in highly-regulated industry.
D. It completely removes human agents from service.
35. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To present the analysis of capabilities of AL
B. To argue the AI’s replacement of service agents.
C. To explore the impact of AI on customer service.
D. To promote the dominance of AI in customer service.

Stress is big, visible, and obvious. Virtually everyone can recognize, and have sympathy for, normal stress-it comes from universally recognized challenges or setbacks, and often there’s a “bad guy” who is the source of it. Maybe it is continually being called on to help needy friends. 36
37 It’s caused by difficult moments that we register as just another bump in the road- if we register them at all. Microstresses come at us so quickly, and we’re so conditioned to just working through them. 38 And even when we do register microstress, we don’t necessarily think about its impact on our lives. For example, a minor disagreement with a friend or classmate over something trivial, like lunch plans or group work.
Microstresses, as their name implies, are small—may be invisible to spot individually. 39 That’s because the source of microstress is seldom a classic antagonist, such as a spectacularly demanding client or a jerk boss. Rather, it comes from the people with whom we are closest: our friends, family members, and colleagues. For example, we may harbor feelings of guilt or failure that we’ve let down someone we care about. The emotion in the relationship--positive or negative- magnifies the impact of the stressor. Of course, you’re never coping with just one or two microstresses. You’re likely facing dozens a day -and you’ve probably come to accept that this way of living is nothing special. “Just let me survive this one week,” you promise yourself, “then I’ll be OK.” Unfortunately, except every week becomes yet another week you just have to survive. 40
A. By contrast, microstress is far less obvious.
B. And the cycle continues for months on end.
C. They tend to seem fleeting, or too minor to hurt us.
D. Or it is preparing for an important yet difficult examination.
E. Or your phone is dying while out with no charger available.
F. However, they involve an emotional baggage that’s not easy to unpack.
G. Individual stressors seem manageable in the moment, but they accumulate.

In eighth grade, our director and drama teacher Mr. Loomis asked me to look for a dog for a supporting role Sandy in our school’s musical. I tried very hard, but in vain. I knew this dog had to have a winning personality, but it would also have to look the part and team up well with the leading role Kayla.
“Ashley, I think I can help you get a dog,” offered John, our assistant director, when we were all done for the afternoon. “That’d be great, “I said, opening the stage door. “I have no idea where to get this puppy.” John flashed a smile at me, “I texted my neighbor, who runs the local shelter. She texted me right back saying she could help us. Don’t worry! Mr. Loomis always says theater is for everyone.”
Truer words were never spoken. My giant birthmark that covered half of my face would be too much of a distraction. I had acted in one musical and loved it, but afterward I overheard a lady telling Mr. Loomis how kind it had been for him to cast me. After that, I stopped performing and worked behind the scenes. However, looking for the perfect Sandy looked like an impossible task.
Desperation forced me to say yes. Hardly had we arrived when John’s neighbor invited us to the backyard. There we saw the dog. “This is the dog you want!” she announced. “He’s obedient and calm.” As she said that, the dog turned around and kissed her.
“He’s a three-legged dog!” I exclaimed, stating the obvious. “Yes,” the neighbor explained. “Abandoned after an accident, he was adopted by my friend, who saw his fantastic potential.”
“Thank you! Take him for the rehearsal (排练) on Monday morning, please.” John said as we left.
All Monday morning I was absent-minded in the classroom. Would he work out as Sandy Would he chew or bark or do anything bad Suddenly I heard the familiar voice of John. “Ashley, Mr. Loomis will be waiting for you at his office during the lunch break.”

第二节(满分25分)
During the lunch break, I went to the office of Mr: Loomis. I cringed, expecting the worst. “He is a perfect Sandy. Well done!” he gushed. For a moment, I was dumbfounded. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine the compliment! Casting a confused look at him, I murmured, “Aren’t you worried about his three legs ” Much to my surprise, he denied firmly, “Theater is art, and if everyone in it were perfect, it would be the most boring place in the world. This dog won’t let us down, I believe. “
On Wednesday night, our Sandy followed Kayla confidently onto the stage. During the performance, he put his head in Kayla’s lap when she belted out a song and looked appropriately adorable everywhere else. A few people made comments about how sweet it was for us to give this dog a chance, but we pointed out that he was the best dog actor. After that, I mustered my courage to sign up for a performing arts camp. When John asked me, “So you’re returning to the world of performing ” I confidently responded, “After all, theater is for everyone.”
