An Unforgettable Tech Exploration Tour
Last weekend I participated in a fabulous tech exploration tour in the city science museum organized by our school.
It kicked off with an exhibition of the history of Chinese science, unfolding the awe-striking wisdom behind. What followed was a hands-on experience, which uncovered the secrets of science. With a lecture on the prospect of science, the tour was brought to an end. Not only did the tour instill me with a sense of pride in our scientific advances, but it also planted in my heart a seed of scientific exploration.
Anybody who shares the same feeling Anticipating your comments!

On Sunday, Callie met Mrs.Baker at the empty lot.“Your mother said you made a tough choice.Thank you for giving a hand today.”Callie smiled as she cleaned with a large trash bag.“Do you need any help ” a voice behind her asked.Callie turned, surprised to see Tamara.“I know you made a promise to clean up the garden, and I wanted to come help you.My mom said she could take us to Fun World next weekend.” With joint efforts, they finished the cleaning. Both Callie and Tamara realized that once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.诸暨中学暨阳分校 2024 学年第一学期期中考试

Hiao Khanh,29, is a member of the Community Malaria(疟疾). Action Team in Ch Rc m
commune, Kr ng pa district, Gia Lai province, which is known for having the highest number of
malaria cases in Vietnam. In 2020, more than 200 cases were reported across the district.
Hiao Khanh has been working in malaria prevention and control since 2019, after he
recovered from malaria. “It was a near-death experience,” said Hiao Khanh. “I had a high fever
before getting medical support. After that, I was determined to help reduce sickness and deaths
from malaria in my community.”
People in this community depend heavily on the forest to earn a living. They go into the
forest to work, and sleep there, putting them at high risk of contracting(感染) malaria. When it
rains, the community's various forest settlements are nearly cut off as the dirt roads are flooded.
Hiao Khanh and his team need to use motorbikes to reach different parts of the community to
help protect people from malaria.
The team's main activities are to raise awareness about malaria prevention, provide
protective items, and find out people who might have malaria and then transport them to
healthcare facilities for testing.
With the right treatment, patients can now be cured in a shorter period of time. However,
ensuring individuals stay on track with their treatment remains a challenge. Forest workers, for
example, often prefer to return to work as soon as their fever breaks. Part of Hiao Khanh's work
is to find and persuade patients to come back for munication is an important
aspect of his team's work. They actively listen to people's concerns, respond to their questions,
and stress the importance of completing the full treatment course. “Just a ‘thank you’ from the
people is enough to give me strength to continue this job to reduce malaria in my homeland,”
said Hiao Khanh.
24. What led Hiao Khanh to take an active role in malaria prevention and control
A. His suffering from malaria. B. A report about malaria cases in Vietnam.
C. His visit to a nearby forest. D. The deaths from malaria in his community.
25. What can be inferred from paragraph 3

26. Which of the following is part of the mission of the Community Malaria Action Team
A. Treating patients with malaria.
B. Educating people about malaria prevention.

A recent study from the University of Guelph in Canada has revealed a surprising discovery
about common eastern bumblebees (大黄蜂): These insects can survive underwater for up to a
week. This finding, published in the journal Biology Letters, came about due to an experimental
error when researchers placed hibernating (冬眠的) queen bumblebees in water and found them
alive days later. The discovery has impressed scientists, particularly because bumblebees are
land-based creatures not typically associated with water environments.
Nigel Raine, a professor in the school of environmental sciences at the university and the
study’s lead author, expressed his astonishment at the results. To further explore this
phenomenon, Raine and his team conducted an experiment involving 143 hibernating queen
bumblebees. They discovered that those placed underwater for up to seven days had similar
survival rates to those not, indicating that the bees’ ability to survive such conditions may be
more common than previously thought.
The research underlines the strength of bumblebees during their hibernation period, a
critical phase in their life cycle that has remained largely unexplored. Queen bumblebees
typically hibernate alone in small holes during the cold months, which are believed to protect
them from flooding. However, this study reveals that these bees possess an unexpected
adaptation, allowing them to survive even in flooded conditions.
Given these findings, one possible explanation for their survival is diapause, a state of
suspended (暂停的) growth and reproduction characterized by reduced oxygen intake. During
this state, bumblebees may close their spiracles (气孔 ) to prevent water from entering their
bodies, and they might also breathe through their skin. This energy-saving mode is likely a key
factor in their ability to survive beneath the water.
Raine emphasized the importance of understanding these mechanisms(机制 ), as it could
have significant implications for the study of wild insects that help with plant reproduction,
which are crucial for food security and ecosystem health. His team’s research will aim to
determine whether hibernating queens can survive even longer periods underwater and if similar
strength exists in other bee species.
28. What do we know about the finding
A. It was made by accident. B. It concerned sea insects.
C. It was fully anticipated. D. It matched previous beliefs.
29. What can be inferred about bumblebees from paragraph 3
A. They hibernate in groups for protection.
B. They are always protected from flooding.
C. They have a hidden adaptation mechanism.
D. They reproduce better in flooded conditions.
30. What may Nigel Raine do in the future
A. Secure research patents. B. Prioritize dietary security.
C. Conduct further research. D. Raise ecological awareness.

Recently, the news that a school in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, serves pre-made meals to its students
has sparked heated discussions across the country. People doubt if pre-made meals, despite being
convenient, are healthy and nutritious enough for growing teenagers.
Pre-made meals refer to half-finished or finished dishes that are already cooked or prepared,
according to the China Cuisine Association. There are several types of pre-made foods,
including ready-to-eat food, such as canned food or cooked food in packages, and ready-to-heat
or ready-to-cook food, which requires heating or cooking before being served.
Many people tend to think that ready-to-heat and ready-to-cook foods are less nutritious
because they usually need to be kept in refrigerators.“Actually freezing does not cause a loss of
nutrients,” Liu Junya, a 33-year-old dietitian in Beijing said. “Nutrient loss typically occurs
during the heating or frying process.”
Vitamins from the B group and vitamin C found in meat and vegetables are heat-sensitive
and can be lost during the process. By being heated or cooked twice or more, “pre-made foods
can be less nutritious than freshly prepared and cooked foods,” Liu said.
Meanwhile, “many pre-made food companies prioritize taste over nutrition,” said Liu. This
leads to higher levels of salt and sugar in the food, which may lead to health problems, such as
high blood pressure in the long term.
Additives (添加) are also a major concern related to pre-made food.In China, there are
strict standards for food additives. Currently, China’s food industry has well-developed
techniques to preserve pre-made food without the excessive use of additives. Some food can be
sterilized(消毒)and then sealed after cooking, followed by low-temperature storage, allowing
for a longer shelf life. However, it’s essential that customers buy pre-made meals from qualified
food companies or supermarkets.
It is hoped that regulations on pre-made meals can be strengthened to better ensure nutrition
and hygiene (卫生).This way, “pre-made meals will be more accepted by the public,” Liu said.
32.What can we learn about pre-made meals from the article
A.They are rich in various vitamins.
B.They are popular among youngsters.
C.They taste better than home-made food.
D.They are already partially or fully cooked.
33.According to Liu Junya, when does nutrient loss typically occur in pre-made foods
A.During cooking. B.During freezing.
C.During packaging. D.During sales.

34.What is one of the key recommendations for consumers regarding pre-made meals
A.Keep pre-made meals frozen. B.Buy from reliable sources.
C.Follow the cooking instructions. D.Pay attention to the additives used.
35.What does Liu Junya think of pre-made meals
A.They are a safe choice for all.
B.They bring more convenience to daily life.
C.They can be acceptable if properly regulated.
D.They should be cut out for long-term health.

Household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing the dishes, and making the bed are never

from the UK Biobank. They found that those most engaged in household chores had a 21 percent
lower risk of dementia compared to those least engaged in chores. 38 .
Finishing your chores can increase motivation. BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits: The Small
Changes That Change Everything, states that the most important skill is recognizing and
celebrating pleting even a small task, like making your bed, can give you a sense
of satisfaction. 39 . Similarly, author Admiral William H. McRaven argues that if you want
to change the world, start off by making your bed.
Chores are good for children’s mental health. Children develop a sense of ownership when
they have jobs to do around the house and it makes them feel like they are an important member
of the household. 40 . In my own case, I bond with my daughter by gossiping (闲聊) and
