(一)be supposed/expected to do的用法
【观察】
1.You are supposed to shake hands when you meet someone for the first time in China.
2.You are not supposed to arrive at 6:00.
3.He is expected to do well in the test.
【探究】
1.be supposed to do意为“应该……;预料”。主语是物时,意为“本应;本该”,指“某事本应该发生却没有发生”。
2.be expected to do意为“被期望……”,表示一种可能性,表达“被期许(预期)会做某事”。
(二)“It is+adj.+to do sth.”的用法
【观察】 It is easy to ride a bike.
【探究】 it作形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式。

第一课时(1a-2d)
Study of the Text                         
What:
1a is a preliminary introduction to different cultural customs. 1b inputs the key sentence patterns of the section in the form of listening. 1c has students drill in pairs. 2a-2d focus on listening and speaking instruction. Listening and speaking activities are designed on a gradient.
Why:
1a asks students to observe the view. 1b asks students to listen and then test their accuracy in their predictions for Activity 1a. 1c and 2c are language output based on the listening content. 2d presents an authentic context for students to imitate the conversation.
How:
1a-1c are the introduction sections, which require students to observe the theme, match the country with the person they first meet based on their own judgment, input key sentence patterns in the form of listening, and have them practice. 2a mainly discusses the etiquette errors that occur during a family dinner with an American friend's family. Design listening and speaking activities according to gradients, guiding students to repeatedly use “be supposed to do” when they meet for the first time.

Purpose To stimulate students' interest by presenting pictures.

Get the students to look at the picture in 1a and ask “Where are they ” “What are they doing ” “What are people in China supposed to do when they meet for the first time ”
Purpose To get students to have a good prediction of the text content.
Step 3 Presentation—Match (1a)
Students match the countries with the customs.

Step 4 Presentation—Listening predictions (1b)
Get students to look at the picture and the chart in 1a and try to make predictions.

Get students to listen and check the answers in 1a.
Step 6 Pair-work (1c)
1.Ask students to practice the conversation in 1b. Then make conversations using the information in 1b.

2.Check their work with several pairs.
Purpose To check whether students master target sentences well in 1a and give students more practice in using the target language in natural speech.

Maria is an exchange student. Last night she had dinner at an American friend's house. Listen and check the mistakes Maria made.
Step 8 Listening (2b)
Listen again. Fill in the blanks.

Study of the Text                         
What:
This is an article about the customs in two countries and it mainly describes the differences in customs between the two countries.
Why:
3a is designed to stimulate students' interest and train students' skimming skills to find out the theme of the text according to its content; 3b is designed to train the scanning (searching) strategy to find out the differences between the two countries.
How:
Understand and briefly introduce the different etiquette habits of different countries in terms of time, visiting friends, planning, etc. By using skills such as skimming, searching and paraphrasing, students can improve their reading comprehension ability.Through self-directed, collaborative, and exploratory learning, extract, organize, and summarize key information about customs in different countries in the discourse.

Study of the Text                         
What:
The text in this grammar lesson is dialogs about two important phrases. The grammar focuses on the usage of “be supposed to” and “be expected to”.
Why:
Grammar Focus summarizes sentence patterns for asking about etiquette and customs in a table format. Activity 4a gives students the opportunity to learn different forms of expression by practicing three phrases in comparison. Activity 4c enables students to consolidate the language they have learned in an authentic context.
How:
The grammar material about expressing customs is unfolded by dialogs. Both are used to indicate that something should be done or is expected to happen according to regulations or traditional habits, with the infinitive sign “to” followed by the verb base form.
