My mother used to be addicted to the second-hand store. She went every week to see if there were some good bargains. Of course she found deals, being a careful shopper that she is —fine china sets, silverware, kitchen appliances, to name a few. The problem was that these deals came home. They filled the house, packing shelves and occupying counter space.
Several years ago, I said to my mother in frustration, “It would be a terrible dream to have to deal with all this stuff if you died tomorrow.” She looked at me for a few minutes, saying nothing. Up until then, I suspect she’d assumed thateveryone appreciated her junk-treasures as much as she did. What followed, mercifully, was a house cleaning. Mom removed much of her stuff and ceased her weekly visits to that store.
That conversation revealed to me the importance of discussing the long-term intentions for one’s belongings. If I hadn’t said anything, I suspect it would have been decades before my 50-something-year-old mother realized what a burden her stuff would be on the family someday —and just think of all the additional things she could have accumulated in that time. It makes me shiver.
Later, I heard of “Swedish Death Cleaning”. The first time I heard the term, I thought it meant some kind of hardcore Scandinavian house-cleaning routine, where you clean your home from top to bottom to the point of physical collapse, as in “working yourself to the bone”. Well, I was wrong.
In Swedish, the word is “dostadning” and it refers to the act of slowly and steadily decluttering(清洁)as the years go by, ideally beginning in your fifties and going until the day you kick the bucket. The ultimate purpose of death cleaning is to minimize the amount of stuff, especially meaningless clutter, which you leave behind for others to deal with.
As for this decluttering philosophy with the name of “Swedish Death Cleaning”, I can’t agree more. Who can possibly resist it
24. What can we know about the author’s mother
A. She was a dealer. B. She had a tight budget.
C. She was economical in life. D. She was good at doing housework.
25. How might the mother feel at the author’s words at first
A. Sympathetic. B. Concerned. C. Annoyed. D. Unexpected.
26. What does “Swedish Death Cleaning” mean according to the passage
A. A cleaning after one’s death. B. Cleaning aimed at reducing after 50 or so.
C. A particularly tiring thorough cleaning. D. Cleaning of useless stuff just before death.
27. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To introduce a lifestyle. B. To memorize her mother.
C. To talk about a shopping habit. D. To emphasize the key to cleaning.

It’s easy to think of sports as an escape from reality, removing the problems of our world. Researcher Madeleine Orr illustrates that wrong belief in her book Warming Up: How Climate Change Is Changing Sport. In her book, Orr leads readers to learn about all the ways climate change is affecting sports around the world, providing a convincing case for action from athletes, sports leagues and fans alike.
Orr, a sports ecologist at the University of Toronto, draws on her academic knowledge to outline how climate change is affecting sports. While Orr supports her argument with data and interviews with experts, it’s the personal stories that are most powerful. There’s the heartbreaking story of a football player JordanMcNair, who died of heat stroke at practice.
It’s refreshing to see Orr talk about how climate change is disproportionately impacting nations that are least responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions, a point that can get lost in Western reporting on the topic. High temperatures are threatening Kenyan runners. Rising seas are eroding(侵蚀)a famous rugby beach in Fiji. A 2022 flood destroyed Pakistan’s sports leagues—along with much of the country.
But against the background of climate change’s upsetting reality,Orr keeps hope alive in the last six chapters. The sports world can adapt to climate change toensure that sports survive. She spotlights the past and present activism of athletes who are fighting for sustainability. One uplifting example is Innes FitzGerald, who refused to fly from Britain to Australia for the 2023 World Athletics Championships out of concern for air travel’s carbon emissions.
Orr’s writing is authoritative and conversational, and while she sometimes slips into academic terms, her language is largely accessible even to readers with no scientific background. The book is jam-packed with information and has something for sports fans alike. In the fight against climate change, Warming Up shows us that it’s time for the sports world to play ball.
28. What is mainly talked about in Orr’s book
A. The climate problems facing the world. B. The effect of climate change on sports.
C. The sports world’s action to change the climate. D. The writer’s attitude toward the climate change.
29. What make Orr’s opinion more persuasive
A. Experts’talks. B. Individual stories. C. Science reports. D. Collected figures.
30. Why were Kenyan runners mentioned
A. To point out the potential future of rugby.
B. To prove the unfairness of Western reports.
C. To show some innocent victims of climate change.
D. To explain the link between greenhouse gases and climate.
31. What is the feature of Orr’s book
A. It is influential and touching. B. It is theoretical and professional.
C. It is informative and easy to understand. D. It is reliable and full of academic terms.
D
A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by boosting the novelty of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories —their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists, better written and less boring.
The researchers assigned the 300 study participants to three groups: one group was allowed no AI help, a second group could use ChatGPT to provide a single three-sentence starting idea, and writers in the third group could choose from up to five AI-generated ideas for their inspiration.
They then organized 600 people to judge how good the stories were, assessing them for novelty —whether the stories did something new or unexpected —and “usefulness” —how appropriate they were for the target audience, and whether the ideas could be developed and potentially published.
They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains to their creativity, their stories scoring 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI. Writers who used up to five AI-generated ideas also scored higher for emotional characteristics, producing stories that were better written, more enjoyable, less boring and funnier.
The researchers evaluated the writers’creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers —those with the highest DAT scores —benefited least from generative AI ideas. Conversely, less creative writers saw a greater increase in creativity.
The researchers also calculated how similar the stories were to each other. They found a 10.7% increase in similarity between writers whose stories used one generative AI-idea, compared with the group that didn’t use AI.
Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is a risk oflosing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to embrace more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other.”
32. Which aspect of the AI-assisted stories were assessed in the study
A. Universality and availability. B. Originality and practicality.
C. Creativity and specialization. D. Similarity and integrity.
33. What might the underlined word “Conversely” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Sure enough. B. In conclusion. C. On the contrary. D. As a result.
34. What is Anil Doshi’s attitude towards AI-inspired stories
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Ambiguous.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. AI Is Being Used to Create Novel Stories
B. AI Is Becoming a Threat to Human Writers
C. AI Can Help to Improve People’s Writing Skills
D. AI Can Boost the Creativity of Stories but Pays a Price
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As a long-term advocate for organic growing, time and time again I come across the same misconceptions about organic pest(害虫)control and what it really involves. 36 Here I want to have a quick look at these misconceptions and explain why they are wrong.
37 This is the most common wrong opinion. I am often asked how to kill a particular pest. However, wiping out particular pests should never be the goal of organic pest control, with the exception of a few non-native species. That’s because even pest species can be crucial parts of the garden ecosystem. 38 Instead of trying to remove particular pests, we should be thinking about how to confuse, distract, or redirect a particular species.
Another common mistake that people make is thinking that organic pest control primarily means finding natural, organic alternatives to the pesticides(农药)they may have previously used. Organic pesticides are indeed free from certain chemicals. But it does not necessarily mean that they are harmless. 39
Pest problems can be solved alone. It is also a common mistake to start thinking about a particular pest issue without taking a look at the bigger picture. 40 In other words, we should not react to a pest problem but rather find ways to reduce the chances of a serious pest problem developing in the first place.
A. We need to get rid of pests.
B. Pests don’t necessarily do harm to plants.
C. Organic pesticides are the solution to pesticides in some way.
D. They can still do harm if used with abandon and without thought.
E. Killing them does harm to the biodiversity and health of the ecosystem.
F. In fact, being prepared is always better than taking a negative approach.
G. These misleading ideas can easily get in the way when we create gardens.

I, together with my neighbor, arrived in Mali, West Africa, to visit her child, Mary, who was volunteering there. That was a poor area and people lived in mud huts without modern conveniences. However, the villagers appeared content. I had expected we would spend our time helping the poor villagers—we brought many soccer balls, pens, and inexpensive watches—believing that somehow we could improve the villagers’lives. Instead, they were teaching us that having less meant less to worry about and more time and energy for each other. These wonderful people of a different faith taught me an important lesson. And I felt honored and appreciated living here —the opposite of what I’d felt nine months earlier when I’d felt pressured to resign from my job.
For twelve years I’d worked at the hospital. One day they told me I was no longer needed. I understood that it was a cost-cutting move to replace me with someone with less experience and a lower salary. But my understanding didn’t remove the pain of feeling useless.
When I was sad and worried about my future, a fellow health educator at another hospital said to me, “I’ve just learned the most helpful tool,” she said. “No matter what the situation is, there is an opposite, a benefit. Our typicalresponse is to focus on the losses of jobs, marriage, home, or even health. Instead, the speaker told us to concentrate on finding what we gained with our loss.”
At first, I resisted her advice and didn’t care about “opposites”. I forgot my dream to travel around the world in a trailer(房车)and forgot everything I wished to do when I was busy. I only wanted my job back. I missed my office, my coworkers, the routine. I missed the meaningful challenges of organizing health education classes for sick people. But as time passed, I grew tired of my sorrow and loneliness. Maybe I should try my friend’s advice and seek some opposites.

Dear fellow students,
To raise our awareness of keeping a healthy weight and improve our overall well-being, our school is going to launch an activity called “Cherish Health, Focus on Weight”. The specific arrangements are as follows:
First, there will be professional doctors giving lectures on the relationship between weight and health as well as the ways to maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and proper exercise. Then, we’ll set up various fitness classes and competitions to encourage physical activity after class.
This is a great opportunity for all of us to take better care of our health. So come and join us!

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
The opposite of loneliness would be friendship, so I called a kind-hearted neighbor. I decided to develop a friendship with her. I asked if she would like to take an exercise class with me. Soon we became good friends. We often went shopping together and had a walk every day. Although I missed my busy hours at work, I now had more personal time. I had choices. I tackled cleaning projects I’d delayed due to my long work hours. I volunteered at a mental health program.
These activities enriched my life, but the trip to Africa changed my life completely. In Mali, the villagers’contentment with so little made me realize true happiness comes from connections and love, not material wealth. This profound awakening inspired me to reevaluate my life. Upon returning home, I sold my house and invested ina trailer. I journeyed around the world, not just to see new places, but to immerse myself in different cultures and learn from people living differently. Each stop brought new friendships, lessons, and a deeper understanding of what it means to live a fulfilling life. The trip broadened my horizons and transformed my heart and soul.

W: No problem. This place is great. I didn’t know how colorful the Grand Canyon is.
M: Me neither. All the reds, oranges, and browns sure do make a beautiful landscape!
W: Are you going to take pictures
M: Of course! My friends would get mad at me if I didn’t show them pictures of the trip. How about you, Silvia
W: I’d love to, but I left my bag in the car.
M: No worries! You can just copy my photos later.

W: Did you watch Young Heroes on TV last night
M: Why is it called Young Heroes
W: Because it gives a prize to three inspiring young heroes.
M: Who are they What did they do
W: Well, the first hero was Mike. He started helping a charity when he was nine.
M: Cool!
W: He’s a really funny person. Last year he made a TV programme which made everyone laugh and they gave more money to the charity.
M: Who else won the prize
W: Then there was Lisa. When she first started the secondary school, she was very quiet and she had a difficult time.
M: So what did she do
W: She made a website for other students who felt the same. She finds friends for them.
M: What a kind person! Who was the third hero
W: That was Alan. When he was younger, he was very ill and he nearly died.
M: Is he okay now
W: Yes, he spent several years in hospital. He’s better now but he still has difficulty in walking. The amazing thing is that he’s always cheerful and very brave! In his free time he raises money for the hospital.
M: All heroes inspire us to help, actually.

W: Hello, class! The topic of this lesson is the differences between ancient and modern buildings. First, I want to talk about ancient buildings. This is a very interesting subject for me because I studied ancient history in university. Ancient buildings were normally built of stone, and it took many years to complete them. They were also much smaller than modern buildings. The tallest building of the ancient world was the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt. It was 146 meters tall. Now, let’s look at modern buildings. They are a lot different from the buildings of the ancient world. They are normally built of steel and concrete, and it only takes a few years to complete them. They are also much bigger than ancient buildings. The tallest building of the modern world is the BurjKhalifa in the United Arab Emirates. It is 828 meters tall. Set in Shanghai, China, the Shanghai Tower is a 632-meter tall,127-floor skyscraper as the second tallest building in the world and still holds that spot today.
