A couple of years ago, I was in a small classroom watching an older student called Stella answer math questions really well. A teacher read out some numbers—7447, 7089, and 9842, and this student added them up in her head! Every time she did this, she’d close her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was something old called abacus (算盘) This student used a special method called “mental abacus.” She imagined the abacus in her mind and used her fingers to help her work through the math questions.
Later, I understood that being good at using an abacus wasn’t just about counting beads (珠子). So, I decided to sign up for a class to see if I could get better at math too. I was one of those students who always had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear of math. My usual way of solving it was to avoid it.
But after taking a few abacus classes and practicing a lot, math didn’t seem so frightening anymore. I didn’t become a math genius (天才) like Euclid, but practicing did help me feel less afraid of it. According to some studies, practicing with an abacus makes you feel more confident, and less likely to get nervous before a math test. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and results appear to move in steps, with hard work leading to good performance.
After just a few days I felt more confident in math when I got a problem right. Sometimes, I even brought my abacus to school to show my friends and teacher. These were small, but important successes for me.

A. Responsible and humorous. B. Kind and confident.
C. Gentle and patient. D. Eager-to-learn and hard-working.

Tourism can bring about great benefits (益处). It offers a chance for tourists to relax themselves, and enables the visitors to have a better understanding of the historical tourist destinations and enjoy the great views. Most importantly, it brings in money for the local development, and creates lots of jobs for locals.
However, it may also bring some problems. One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination. Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed (破坏) by tourists who “love them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to the future, not destruction.
Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing (打扰) the local people and their life. Some tourists walk around and take pictures of local people without getting their agreement. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students, and disturbing their studies. Another example is Sanlitun, a neighborhood in Beijing, China. Some tourists love to party there late into the night, making it difficult for locals to sleep. I have three words for tourists like this: please be thoughtful. Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
Although there might be some problems, with the development of society and the improvement of tourists’ realization, we believe that tourism will develop better in the future.
8. Which of the following is the greatest benefit of developing tourism according to the text
A. Protecting historical sites.
B. Helping with local economy.
C. Providing personal relaxation.
D. Enabling tourists to admire great views.
9. Why are some tourist destinations mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To list places which are worth visiting.
B. To highlight locations with the greatest value.
C. To encourage tourists to visit less crowded sites.
D. To show the problems brought by tourists.
10. How does the author develop Paragraph 3
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By presenting an idea. D. By showing a study result.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of tourism
A. Uninterested. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Acceptable.
D
In today’s digital (数字的) age, online games have become very popular, especially among teenagers who often spend too much time on screens instead of going out for physical activities. While these games can be fun, they also come with big problems, such as addiction. This addiction can lead to many problems, including poor school performance and poor social communication.
Teenagers can easily get addicted to online games because they have more free time and less self-control. Without clear goals or the right help from families and schools, some teens can quickly develop an unhealthy habit of playing online games and reading e-novels, which can cause them to lose interest in their schoolwork and social activities.
Game addiction can also have a great effect on teenagers’ psychological (心理的) health. Psychologists warn that addicted gamers may experience anxiety, anger, and avoid real-life responsibilities. They might also face being alone and have poor communication skills. Chinese parents worry a lot that their children might lose interest in studying. However, many parents have no necessary knowledge and tools to deal with it.
To tackle this problem, several steps need to be taken. Firstly, there must be strict rules on online games to ensure that facial recognition technology works correctly. Secondly, the gaming time for teenagers should be limited (限制) to one hour per weekend. Although these steps might have some shortcomings, it’s important for the government to quickly address these shortcomings and ensure that the rules are strict and work well.
Schools and parents play a key role in educating teenagers about the dangers of spending too much time playing games. They should set limits on screen time and encourage activities such as sports, arts, and community service.
In a word, while online games can be enjoyable, they can also have harmful effects on teenagers if they spend too much time on them. It is important for parents, schools, and policymakers to work together to create a supportive and healthy environment. By doing so, we can ensure that the digital world improves, rather than hinders (妨碍), the lives of the youth.
12. What may be a result of online game addiction
A. Narrow-minded thinking. B. Increased self-confidence.
C. Better communication skills. D. Unsatisfactory school reports.
13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. The advantages of online games for teenagers.
B. The popularity of online games among teenagers.
C. The influence of teens’ addiction to online games.
D. The strategies for preventing online game addiction.
14. What does the underlined word “tackle” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Explore. B. Solve. C. Check. D. Design.
15. Which can match the author’s opinion about online games
A. Too much of a good thing can be bad.
B. Games are the serious business of humans.
C. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
D. Behind every successful child is a supportive parent.

Most of you have probably felt this before — you wait a long time for something, but when it gets close, you’re afraid of what’s coming. That’s exactly how I felt before my first day of senior high school. I worked hard to pass the tests and had an interview with the headmaster to get into this famous school. When it was finally time to start, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so nervous about how I would look in front of everyone.
It was Monday morning. I was too excited to sleep the night before, so I arrived at school half an hour early. I walked nervously through the hallway. After about 15 minutes, the hallway was packed with students. The teachers seemed too busy to notice me. I knew which room I needed to go to and had already checked that it was open, but I was hesitant (犹豫不决的) to go in and stood alone. The students moved around me as if I wasn’t there, and I felt disappointed and lonely.
Suddenly, a well-dressed boy got close to me. He introduced himself as Thompson and asked if I was lost and if he could help me with anything. I realized how kind he was, and he was exactly who I had wished for a minute before, but I was too nervous to be friendly. Instead of accepting his help and making friends with him, I told him to mind his own business and that I was old enough to find my class without anyone’s help.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A The advantages of online games for teenagers.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry.

【答案】 Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry. I felt a wave of shame wash over me. I realized my response had been uncalled for, especially from someone who was trying to help. As I stood there, I wished I could take my words back. The bell rang, signaling the start of the first period, and I reluctantly walked into my classroom, still feeling embarrassed about my earlier reaction.
Unexpectedly, Thompson walked into the same classroom. My heart sank, and I hoped he wouldn’t recognize me as the rude boy from the hallway. But to my surprise, he walked over and sat down next to me, flashing a friendly smile. I took a deep breath and decided to change my approach. “Hey, I’m sorry about earlier. I was really nervous,” I said, trying to sound sincere. “No worries! It’s a big day for all of us. I was nervous too,” he replied. As the class progressed, I felt the weight of my earlier anxiety lift. Thompson ended up being a great friend, and that first day, which had started so painfully, turned into a memorable experience filled with laughter and new beginnings.
