A six-year-old longing to keep a unicorn (独角兽) in her backyard figured she’d get the hard part out of the way first.
Last November, Madeline wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control with a straightforward request. “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response.”
Director Mayeda replied two weeks later. The department does in fact license unicorns she said, under certain conditions. Those include polishing the unicorn’s horn (角) at least once a month with a soft cloth, feeding it watermelon at least once a week, covering it with only sparkles and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows. And, because unicorns are indeed very rare to find, the department is also giving Madeline a toy unicorn to keep her company during her search, as a token of appreciation.
“It is always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals, ” Mayeda wrote in the letter. “I like your sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance to keep a unicorn in Los Angeles County. ”
Mayeda told the Washington Post that was the first time the department had received a request for a license for a unicorn or any mythical creature. They were impressed with the first-grader for wanting to ask permission in the first place, and doing her research to work out how to go about that. She and her colleagues deal with a lot of “life-and-death” issues on the job, whether that’s seeing cases of animal abuse or animals hurting people or making decisions about having to put down dangerous or sick animals. So Madeline’s letter has considerably brightened their spirits, and she is due to visit the department this week to discuss her unicorn license application. Safe to say, she’s in for a magical surprise.
4. Why did Madeline write the letter
A. To apply to visit a unicorn. B. To ask permission to keep a pet.
C. To learn to provide animal care. D. To figure out how to find a unicorn.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. Her application was disapproved. B. She was presented with a live unicorn.
C. Requirements should be met for the license. D. Guidance was given for her search.
6. Which of the following best describes Mayeda
A. Imaginative B. painstaking C. Indifferent D. Understanding
7 Why does the department think the letter “has brightened their spirits”
A. Because they are touched with the girl’s deeds.
B. Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue.
C. Because they are worn out with their daily work.
D. Because it is the first application letter for a pet.
C
In addition to applying for a traditional guide dog, the visually impaired (有视觉障碍的) people will soon have another option to help with their daily life — a robot guide dog.
About the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, the six-legged robot guide dog from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Mechanical Engineering can navigate (导航) users to destinations without running into barriers. It also has voice interaction functions and can recognize traffic light signals. With cameras, sensors, and AI technology, the robot dog can see, listen, and speak with users on daily journeys outside and be a companion at home.
Professor Gao Feng, the head of the research team at SJTU, points out that with six legs, the robot guide dog can walk smoothly with high stability. “Even if three legs are raised, the structure still has three points of contact with the ground, creating a very stable base.” Gao said. He adds that operators can use a cane (手杖) to control the walking and running speed of the robot.
In China, there are currently about 17.31 million visually impaired people, yet only around 400 guide dogs are available due to high training costs. People have to wait for a long time after applying for one. Unlike traditional dogs, the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China. “It's a bit like cars. We can mass-produce them in the same way as cars so that it will become more affordable,” Gao said. “This could be a huge market because tens of millions of people might need guide dogs.”
Li Fei, among the visually impaired people participating in the field test, believes such high technology will likely change their lives soon. “The research teams are thoughtful and are continuously making improvements,” Li said. “The robot dog is electronic, making it easier to get into public places than traditional guide dogs, I will probably try the robot guide dog when it becomes available. They can be precise and reliable as they seldom make subjective mistakes.”
8. What do we know about the robot guide dog
A. It is smaller than an English Bulldog. B. It can identify traffic light signals.
C. It relies on Al technologies to move. D. It can interact with other robot guide dogs.
9. Why does the robot guide dog have six legs
A. To walk more stably. B. To support heavier loads.
C. To better control its speed. D. To quickly deal with urgency.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The potential market for robot guide dogs.
B. The high cost of training traditional guide dogs.
C. The difficulty of applying for a robot guide dog.
D. The standard of mass-producing robot guide dogs.
11. What can we infer about the robot guide dog according to Li Fei
A. It has been widely available to the public.
B. It needs further improvement in accuracy.
C. It will benefit visually impaired people a lot.
D. It will replace traditional guide dogs in the future.

Bookings for trips to Shanxi have doubled since July, and the number of tourists to Shanxi has grown by 50%. Shanxi has rich tourism resources but lacks recognition. Writing an essay is a difficult process for most people. However, the process can be made easier if you learn to practice three simple techniques.
___16___ When you are first trying to think of ideas for an essay, put your pen to your paper and write nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes without letting your pen leave the paper. Stay loose and free. ___17___ Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. Even though this technique won’t work for everyone, it helps many people get a good store of ideas to draw on.
The next technique is to write your draft rapidly without worrying about being perfect. ___18___ Yet, by learning to live with imperfection, you will save yourself headaches and a wastepaper basket full of crumpled (弄皱) paper. Think of your first draft as a path cut out of the jungle—as part of an exploration, not as a complete highway.
The third technique is to try printing out a triple-spaced (三倍行距) copy to allow space for revision. ___19___ As a result, these writers never get in the habit of crossing out chunks (大块) of their draft and writing revisions in the blank space. After you have revised your draft until it is too messy to work from anymore, you can enter your changes into your word processor. ___20___ The resulting blank space invites you to revise.
A. Make sure your handwriting is neat.
B. Let your pen follow the waves of thought.
C. The second draft of the essay should be better.
D. First of all, learn the technique of nonstop writing.
E. Too many writers try to get their drafts right the first time.
F. Many beginning writers don’t leave enough space to revise.
G. Then you can print out a fresh draft, again setting your text on triple-space.

Bill McDonnell, who was a soldier when young, was a 92-year-old now, still healthy and strong. He loved hunting very much. On December 15, Bill decided to go hunting in Shenandoah Mountain the next day as the deer season had begun. His wife Joanna McDonnell intended to let their son Bill McDonnell Jr. accompany him, but Bill Jr. had a football game that day. Bill McDonnell said he could manage all by himself. Joanna then required Bill to be out of the woods by 2 pm and home by 3 pm, plenty of time before sunset. She added, “ Do take some necessities like a flashlight, just in case.”
The next morning, Bill woke up at four, grabbed his muzzleloader (前装枪), and steered his Jeep toward Shenandoah Mountain. At the end of the old Laurel Run logging road, he began to walk. It was about 7:30 am and 25 degrees when the sun peeked through the trees.
Not long into the hike he came upon a path he didn't remember. Maybe this was a secret route to the king of all bucks (雄鹿). He took it. Then, around 11 am, he came into a clearing (林中空地) along a ridge line (山脊线). He had walked farther than he had expected. It seemed that his path up the mountain had meandered quite a bit. “Where am I now ” he muttered. Bill figured he could drop into the valley, hunt a bit and then go back home. But when he snaked down through the forest, he found there was no path at all. The forest was thick. It was hard to tell the direction now.
By around 2 pm, Bill stopped at somewhere in the valley, exhausted. “I’ll get it figured out,” he said to himself. He took out his phone to call his wife, but the phone had died. He dug into his pants for the GPS device he always brought in case of emergency and pushed the “on” button. Nothing. He had forgotten to charge it the night before.
“No, I’m not lost,” he told himself. His eyes caught a stand of tall trees. He remembered admiring the line of fantastic oaks and pines earlier. Reach them and the car wouldn’t be that far off. It meant he would have to cover some ground.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
He was moving slower and slower, Joanna‘s 3 pm deadline having passed.

It was about 9:45 pm when Bill heard the whoop-whoop-whoop of a helicopter.

The department does in fact license unicorns, she said, under certain conditions.
7. Why does the department think the letter “has brightened their spirits”
A. Because they are touched with the girl’s deeds.
B. Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue.
C. Because they are worn out with their daily work.
D. Because it is the first application letter for a pet.

【答案】参考范文:
Good evening, everyone!
I am honored to have the opportunity to deliver a speech on patriotism.
When it comes to patriotism, it usually refers to love of our country, making great contributions to our motherland, and so on. But to me, patriotism is commitment to making a positive difference to our country. To show our love for our country we can start by loving our school. Respecting our school’s values and rules is one way to demonstrate patriotism. Besides, we can actively participate in patriotic activities organized by our school. Furthermore, let’s maintain a clean school environment and take care of school facilities.
I believe if everyone can do their bit, we’ll have a better school and build a stronger nation.
Thank you for your listening!

Bill McDonnell who was a soldier when young, was a 92-year-old now, still healthy and strong.
Not long into the hike, he came upon a path he didn't remember.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】He was moving slower and slower, Joanna’s 3 pm deadline having passed. He knew Joanna must be worrying about him, but he had no way to contact her now. He should have listened to her, not to hunt alone. With great difficulty, he kept walking up the mountain as he remembered, in the hope of reaching his Jeep. But before he found the familiar route, the sun began to slip down below the mountain ridge behind him and then the forest turned pitch-black. Luckily, he brought a flashlight with him. He found himself a place to rest and waited for help.
It was about 9:45 pm when Bill heard the whoop-whoop-whoop of a helicopter. “They come to rescue me!” he felt excited, relieved as well. Bill got to his feet, and turned on his flashlight. He somehow managed to arrive at an open place nearby so that the trees would not block the helicopter. “Here! I’m here!” he shouted, waving his flashlight wildly to attract the helicopter. Thanks to the flashlight, the helicopter spotted him easily. It was directly above him and a strong rope dropped down. He was rescued eventually.
