3 Most Walkable Cities in Europe
Walking on holiday is a great way to stay fit, but also to see the sights a city has to offer. Here are the three most walkable cities in Europe.
Athens, Greece
Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world. The capital of Greece ranks fifth, with a slightly longer—but very worthwhile—route of 2.1 miles between its top-rated tourist attractions.
Visitors to Athens can set off at the Acropolis, climbing to discover the ancient Parthenon that stands as a landmark to the city’s ancient legacy. Then it leads to the Acropolis Museum, with the neighbourhood of Plaka waiting to be explored in the shadow of the Acropolis. The National Archaeological Museum is also close-by.
Seville, Spain
Seville is home to some wonderful sights that are best seen when walking. Seville in Spain takes the top spot as Europe’s most walkable city, offering the shortest walking route between the top five tourist attractions.
Visitors to this charming Spanish city can explore the impressive Plaza de Espana public square, before wandering over to the UNESCO-listed palace of Real Alcazar and Seville Cathedral. After that it’s only a short trip on foot to visit the beautiful Barrio Santa Cruz neighbourhood and admire the Torre Giralda bell tower hanging above. With just 20 minutes of walking between these attractions.
Venice, Italy
Venice is famous for walkers, so it’s no surprise it ranks as the second best location for walkable city breaks. Walking is the best way to explore the bridges over the canals the city is famed for. There are endless charming alleyways to explore, as well as plenty of bridges over the canals that the city is famous for. Just under half an hour of walking here will take you on a tour of the impressive Grand Canal.

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. As a firefighter, you’re constantly thinking of other people and trying to help children. It’s the mindset, that is the most difficult part in this job!
One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) place. I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the burrito joint to order. When he followed me in, the people behind the count er refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to encourage him to order whatever and however much he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at least 3 times over!
For someone who has been on the edges of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behavior. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. I know we see these people every day asking for money but you had to be there to see the look in his face. To me it reminded me when I was young and my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I think he felt special, like he was getting attention. Again something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.
24. What’s the hardest part of being a firefighter according to the author
A. Learning to be a good firefighter.
B. Deciding what to do in the future.
C. Dealing with the brother’s relationship.
D. Developing the mindset of helping others.
25. What do we know about the homeless man
A. He was grateful for the author’s kindness.
B. He ordered whatever he wanted the moment he was in.
C. He asked the author to buy a burrito to fill his stomach.
D. He was not welcomed by those running the burrito joint at first.
26 What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the birthday cake
A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.
B. To explain the reason for the values he holds onto.
C. To show the similar experience of the homeless man.
D. To tell the difference between him and the homeless man.
27. Which of the following words can best describe the writer
A. Caring and humorous.
B. Selfless and determined.
C. Kind-hearted and thoughtful.
D. Considerate and Hard-working.
C
Everywhere I look, there are new buildings under construction. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living. However, how can our children understand and maintain their cultural identity if we erase so much of the physical evidence of it
The arguments for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional attachment to the past. There are also good economic arguments in favour of preservation. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local residents, eager to learn about their city's past.
Some have argued that historic preservation is too expensive, but many recent projects have demonstrated that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation of an existing structure for adaptive reuse can cost about 40 per square metre less than even the most basic new construction, while preserving the beauty of the original building. And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren’t very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New construction almost always has a more serious environmental impact (影响) because it requires the use of all-new materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too.
Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered.
28. What drives people to replace old buildings with new ones
A. Their dislike of old buildings. B. Their pride in cultural identity.
C Their concern about young generations. D. Their desire for modern comforts.
29. What does the example of Al Bastikiya show
A. Historic renovation costs much money.
B. Local governments support small businesses.
C. Historic preservation brings economic benefits.
D. International tourism promises economic recovery.
30. What can be inferred about renovating old buildings from paragraph 3
A. It uses green materials. B. It damages architectural beauty.
C. It reduces enviromental impact. D. It worries environmental experts.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards historic preservation
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective.
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an important role in the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and Asian Para Games. AI usually refers to the advanced technologies, such as the naked-eye 3D, VR, AR and so on. These terms might sound familiar, but how smart are they when applied to the 56 Asian Games venues (场地)
Their smartness can be found in running the venues with less human labor forces and with more connections between man and machines. At the Huanglong Sports Center, a system called Smart Stadium Brain is built. The Brain, a 25-square-meter high-definition (高清晰度) screen in the venue’s information center, displays the entire venue in 3D visualization to keep an eye on the temperature, the lighting, the energy consumption, and the facilities to guarantee a friendly environment for the athletes and audiences. For the benefit of audiences, a small screen on each seat is designed to be at the audience’s service. By finger touching, the audience can control it from three parts — angle, speed, and size to watch and keep in contact with the event. What’s more, supported by the 5G technology, a 360° playback function is fixed.
AI also means further protection on environment. At the Fuyang sports Center, although it has been raining for days, the roof of the venue still remains dry. And the secret lies in its attractive sky garden. The garden, covering the roof, is not only eye-catching but also useful. It allows the greening rate of the entire stadium to reach as high as 45%, being energy-saving. Under the cobblestones (鹅卵石) of the sky garden, a recovery system is filtering (过滤) and collecting rainwater for the venue’s water system, fountain, and irrigation water.
Smart devices are employed both inside and outside the venues. For example, the Tonglu sports Center starts a WeChat mini-program for any follower to learn about the venue through VR games and videos before the Hangzhou Asian Games. During the Games, the program will allow the athletes and audiences to place orders online, waiting in the venue for a robot waiter to deliver and serve their food.
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “guarantee” in Para 2
A. Make sure of. B. Take advantage of.
C. Get used to. D. Keep up with.
33. What can we infer from Para 2
A. The audience can’t see the whole venue on the large screen.
B. The stadium is environmentally friendly and advanced but costly.
C. The audience can control small screens on their seats as they wish.
D. Small screens make the game watching enjoyable and convenient.
34. How does the roof of the venue keep dry while it’s raining
A. By saving energy. B. By using the cobblestone of the sky garden.
C. By recycling the rainwater. D. By improving the greening rate.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Asian Games with Artificial Intelligence.
B. A Sports Center with Smart Stadium Brain.
C. More Connections with Smart Devices.
D. Smart Asian Games with High-tech Venues.

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone.
The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. It always comes first to manage your study time wisely, which helps to balance your study and life, and promote your study efficiency. Keeping good living habits is also preferable. Just as one American president said, life is education. Those who fail to live are definitely incapable of learning. Plus, why not do more exercise, which will free you from the study pressure
I hope you’ll benefit from my advice, and wish you’ll adapt to high school life as soon as possible!
Yours,
Li Hua
