Troy Millhollin’s heart sank when Blue, his friend Brandon Garrett’s dog, arrived at their campsite alone and scratched (挠). “I knew something was wrong when Blue came without Garrett,” Millhollin said, “I shouldn’t have let Garrett take Blue to cut firewood first.”
On June 2nd, Millbolin, 46, and Garett, 60, were heading to their favorite remote camp in Oregon. It’s a tradition they value, spending quality time together. When Garrett didn’t show, and Blue’s scratches turned out to be cuts, Milholin went looking for him.
Determined to find his friend, Millhollin returned to town, only to find that Garret had disappeared without a mark. With the help of local friends, a quick search began. Garret’s brother, Tyree, knowing the area well, identified two spots where Garrett’s vehicle might have gone unnoticed. At the first location on US Forest Service Road 39, Tyree made no cell service and had to leave to call for help.
Only later did the family realize that Blue had walked about four miles from where he and his owner had crashed before finding and notifying Millbollin. Throughout a cold, rainy night, Garret was trapped, injured but clear-headed. At daybreak, despite his desperate situation, his cries were heard by Sheriff Travis Ash and the Search and Rescue team, who found and airlifted him to a hospital for treatment of a broken foot and cuts.
Blue’s loyalty (忠诚)) in seeking help has moved all who heard the story. Millhollin, whose truck Garrett was driving, is not concerned about its condition. I’m just relieved (感到宽慰的) they’re all okay.” he said.
Garrett is recovering at home. Blue’s miracle (奇迹) journey to get help shows the strong bond between human and their pets. “Dogs have an incredible sense of direction. They’re incredibly smart.” Tyree observed.
This story of friendship and loyalty proves the deep connections we share with our animal companions and that they will spare no effort to protect us Garrett’s appreciation for Blue’s bravery and his friends’ support is a touching display of the true spirit of friendship and lasting bonds.

The Earth has just been sent a message from space. Now people around the world are trying to figure out what the message says. But the message wasn’t from aliens — intelligent creatures from other parts of the universe. Instead, it’s part of a project designed to see how humans might react if we did get a message from aliens.
The idea that there might be aliens is popular in books and movies. But so far, there’s been no known sign that they exist. Still, many scientists believe the universe is large enough that it’s likely that other intelligent creatures could exist somewhere.
A number of scientists are trying to find vestiges of such creatures. The most well-known group is called SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). One of the big questions about such creatures is if they existed, would we be able to communicate with them Daniela de Paulis is an artist who’s working with scientists at SETI. She wondered what would happen if the Earth actually received a message from space, How would people react Would people be able to work together to figure out what the message said
Daniela de Paulis came up with a project designed to test how humans reacted to getting such a message. She calls the project A Sign in Space. She worked with a group of scientists at SETI to come up with a secret message. Last Wednesday, the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft sent the coded message back to Earth from Mars. The signal was picked up by several radio telescopes around the world.
The data (the information from the message) has now been put on the Internet. Anyone can download it and try to figure out what it means. A special website has been set up for people to report their ideas about the message, and discuss any progress they make in trying to translate it.
8. What is the purpose of designing a message from space
A. To know how people respond. B. To let us know aliens’ lifestyle.
C. To tell we haven’t found aliens. D. To deny the existence of aliens.
9. What does the author imply about the presence of aliens
A. It makes people worried. B. It needs further evidences.
C. It is an incorrect imagination. D. It brings confusions to space study.
10. What does the underlined word “vestiges” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Signs. B. Groups. C. Homes. D. Records.
11. What can be inferred about the message from Mars from the last paragraph
A. SETI keeps it a big secret. B. Scientists have translated it.
C. Everyone has access to it. D. It is only studied by scientists.
D
Have you ever struggled with a task because two arms just weren’t enough If so, you might like a new device that can lend a helping hand literally (真正地). You wear this robotic arm, and then control it with the muscle you use to breathe.
Currently, the robotic arm is worn in the middle of your chest, but it can also be placed above your shoulders or at your side, depending on what you want to do with it. Engineer Giulia Dominijanni, part of a team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), helped create the device.
In the past, robotic arms were designed to replace lost arms, with brain signals controlling them. This new device allows users to control an extra arm while still using their real arms. For this reason, the team designed it to be controlled by breathing.
The robotic arm can sense the movement of your diaphragm (膈膜), the muscle that helps you breathe. When you breathe in, the robotic arm stretches; when you breathe out, it retracts (缩回). Breathing normally keeps the arm still.
Before making the actual arm, the EPFL team created a virtual reality (VR) model. Volunteers learned to control this virtual third arm using breath sensors. The tests showed that people could easily look around and talk while using the arm.
After successful VR tests, the team built a simple robotic arm that functions like the virtual one. Early tests showed that users could comfortably operate the extra arm alongside their own arms.
However, researchers are still exploring how well people can control this robotic arm without affecting the use of their natural arms. Jacob George, a director at the University of Utah’s robotics center, notes, “When you’re adding something new on your body, it’s unclear how much the brain can do with that. But in time it becomes possible to control the new arm well.” And scientists at EPFL believe that understanding this could benefit those with disabilities or people recovering from injuries.
12 How do EPFL’s robotic arms differ from previous ones
A. They feature affordable prices. B. They are operated by breathing.
C. They can address our health issues. D. They are controlled by brain signals.
13. Why did the EPFL team create a VR model
A. To cut its production cost. B. To attract more volunteers.
C. To know how brains work. D. To test the newly-invented arm’s actual function.
14. What is Jacob’s attitude to the robotic arm
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Robotics Gives Us an Extra Arm
B. A New Device Helps Scientists
C. The Secret of Human Brains
D. Tips on How to Use an Extra Arm

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After graduating from high school, I opened a small barbershop (理发店) in the community where I lived. My goal wasn’t to make a lot of money, but to serve my neighbors, because they helped me when I was in need. I kept my prices low and made sure everyone felt welcome. Among all my clients, my favorite was a five-year-old boy named Jackson. Jackson was an introvert (内向的人), very afraid of dealing with people, and hated getting his hair cut. So getting a haircut is a special challenge for him.
One afternoon, Jaekson’s mother, Emily, came into my shop looking exhausted and desperate. She explained that Jackson had been terrified of haircuts for as long as she could remember. It was typically a bit hard to convince him to sit down. And he’d get so resistant later that he’d start kicking and screaming. They had tried several barbers before, but none had succeeded in making Jackson feel comfortable. Understanding her struggle, I decided to approach the situation differently. Instead of starting the haircut right away, I focused on building a friendship with Jackson. I noticed that he was fascinated by the bright colors of the toys I had in my shop, so I used them as an icebreaker.
Over the next few visits, Jackson and I spent a lot of time together without the pressure of a haircut. We played games and built towers with blocks. I even let him “cut” the hair of one of my old dolls. Slowly, Jackson began to trust me. He would laugh when I made funny faces and even started looking forward to our play sessions.
After a few weeks, I decided to introduce the idea of a haircut as a fun challenge. I told Jackson that he was a superhero and needed a special haircut to complete his transformation. I brought a small cape (短斗篷) for him to wear and let him hold a toy that made him feel brave. I explained that the haircut was part of his superhero training, a mission he had to complete to gain his superhuman power.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The first haircut was slow and cautious (谨慎的).

【答案】 The first haircut was slow and cautious (谨慎的). I moved the scissors gingerly, constantly checking in with Jackson to ensure he was at ease. Every few seconds, I would stop and ask him if he was okay. His little hands were tightly holding onto the cape, but his eyes showed less fear. With each snip of the scissors, I could see his confidence growing. Finally, when the haircut was done, Jackson looked in the mirror, a big smile spreading across his face.
From that day on, Jackson became a regular at my shop. Not only did he come for haircuts, but also to share the joys and sorrows of his kindergarten life. He would bring his new toys to show me and tell me stories about his kindergarten. I was so glad that I could make such a big difference in his life. And seeing his transformation from a scared little boy to a confident one filled my heart with warmth and joy.
