I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate and find great satisfaction in it, after all.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. He is content with his learning achievements. B. His good grades got him a good job.
C. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely. D. His views on social values are well known.
25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A. A bystander . B. A judge. C. A helper. D. A destroyer.
26. What is the greatest achievement for the author
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in school’s service.
27. Why does the author want to study social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To better help the disadvantaged. D. To meet his grandparents’ expectations.

Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) products are not new. However, researchers have been working to improve the technology. Now virtual (虚拟的) assistants, like Siri and Alexa, can have short conversations with us. AlphaGo taught itself to play chess and became better than the top human players.
Now an AI system has been tasked with passing a multiple-choice (多项选择) exam. The goal is to improve machines’ language understanding and logic (逻辑) with so-called computer vision .
A system named Aristo was developed by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a lab in the United States city of Seattle. It recently passed an eighth-grade science exam taken by many US students, The New York Times reported. It correctly answered more than 90 percent of the questions. Then it was given a twelfth-grade exam. It scored more than 80 percent.
It’s an example of the progress in AI development. Four years ago, 700 computer scientists tried to develop AI systems that could pass these kinds of exams. None scored higher than 60 percent.
Aristo was able to pass the exams because it can not only understand language but also use logical thinking to solve difficult problems. For example, it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could endanger animals like squirrels or decrease the food supply they need.
The system used BERT, a kind of neural (神经的) network technology developed by Google, to answer the questions. BERT has “read” thousands of English articles. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With BERT’s help, Aristo “read” many multiple-choice questions and answers. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns on its own.
It may still be in the earliest stages, said Jingjing Liu, a Microsoft researcher who has been working on similar technologies. “We can’t compare this technology to real human students and their ability to reason.”
However, Aristo’s success means that AI systems are getting better at understanding users, and we might see improved search engines and hospital databases in the near future.
28. Why did scientists develop Aristo
A. To make better multiple-choice exams. B. To improve AI’s ability to teach itself.
C. To shorten the time AI needs to “read” information. D. To improve the language understanding and logic of AI.
29. What can we know about Aristo from its exam results
A. It was smarter than most US students. B. It could only deal with science questions.
C. It was best at understanding English. D. It did better than other AI systems in similar tasks.
30. What does the third-to-last paragraph talk about
A. How Aristo teaches itself. B. How Aristo reads English articles.
C. How Google developed BERT. D. How difficult it was to design Aristo.
31. What can we learn from Jingjing Liu’s words
A. AI will soon replace humans in many tasks. B. Aristo still cannot compare to human reasoning skills.
C. Humans can’t live without AI in the future. D. Aristo performs better with a larger database.
D
“Helicopter (直升机) parenting” describes a style of raising children where parents are over-protective and do too much. The term describes parents who hover over their kids at home and on the playground like a helicopter. Today, modern technology allows these helicopter parents to hover from even far away. They can give their children directions at any moment from anywhere.
Julie Lythcott-Haims wrote a book titled How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kids for Success. In her book, she gives readers a closer look at this parenting style. She also explains why parents should stop it.
Julie Lythcott-Haims says she experienced the effects of helicopter parenting first- hand when she worked as dean of first- year students at Stanford University. The incoming students or freshmen, she says, were very smart and accomplished on paper. But many were unable to take care of themselves. “They were turning to parents constantly for guidance, for problem- solving, to have them make the choice about something.”
Lythcott-Haims warns this kind of parenting has many short-term wins but long-term costs that harm the child. She uses an area common to most children-a playground. Lythcott-Haims suggests letting your child get a little hurt.
“If you do your child’s homework, it will be perfect. That is what she calls the short- term win. The long-term cost is that your child may not feel capable. And he does not become a determined learner, meaning he will give up easily when faced with a difficult problem to solve.” So what can parents do if they want to break the over-parenting “helicopter” cycle Reading Julie’s book, you can follow some ways to stop hovering over your children. In a word, when kids have all the skills to take care of themselves, they will be prepared for adulthood.
32. The underlined words “hover over” in Paragraph I probably mean “______”.

A. Short- term wins can harm the kids. B. Getting protection from parents is essential.

A. Encourage them to do what they can do. B. Help them grow with parents’ protection.
C. Guide them in doing as parents do or say. D. Prevent them from playing on a playground.
35. What would be the best title for the passage
A. How to Break the Over- Parenting Cycle B. How to Help Adults with Their Problems

W: Mr. Anderson has been moved to another school, and Mr. Peterson took his place. The computer lab has been set up. The library was redecorated. And a new gym has been built beside the main gate. There are some new teachers too.

W: Hello, San Felice Hotel. May I help you
M: Yes. I’d like to book a room, please. Starting from March the 23rd. Three nights.
W: What kind of room would you like, sir Single or double
M: Well, we have two people, so the latter is better. And I’d appreciate it if you could give me a south-facing room and with a view over the lake.
W: Certainly, sir. I’ll just check what we have ... Yes, we have a room on the 4th floor that meets your requirements.
M: Fine. How much is the charge per night
W: It’s eighty euros per night.
M: That’s fine.
W: Who’s the booking for, please, sir
M: Mr. and Mrs. Ryefield, that’s R-Y-E-F-I-E-L-D.
W: Okay. Now please take note of this number 7576385. We need to confirm it at check-in. Thank you for choosing San Felice Hotel and have a nice day. Goodbye.

M: Thank you so much, ladies and gentlemen, you can have your seats and enjoy with us the rest of the program. The New Year for me, especially when I was quite young, was more of a festival. I remember waiting almost the entire year for the New Year’s holidays. I remember saving money and keeping that for buying New Year cards. And that was the most unforgettable memory of my childhood instead of getting pocket money. I remember those beautiful little cards and the small envelopes in which I used to put those cards. In fact, the biggest and the best card was for our teacher, the second-best for the best friend, and the rest was for others, including my brothers and sisters. I remember spending a whole week in happiness and bringing home a lot of New Year cards. Nowadays when I see those cards I am reminded of my childhood. And I still buy one for myself. I hope many of you do. And on this occasion, we will hand out New Year cards, chocolates, and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little presents. After that, we will move on to our musical journey.
