With most Chinese people speaking Mandarin, or putonghua, some local dialects, or fangyan, are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources(资源) Protection Project in 2015.
This project looked at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages included 103 dialects that are almost gone. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts(专家)and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
This project has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. Now a dialect library has been built online, where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million recordings and over 5 million videos. At present, the project has entered into the second stage. It plans to create digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture According to British expert Harold Palmer, dialects are the key to keeping local cultures, because they faithfully show the histories, the beliefs and the fixed ideas of an area.
Zhang Hongming, another expert, talked about the worrying situation of dialects. Researchers from a university in California have found that eye damage caused by too much screen time can harm other important organs(器官) and even shorten your life. Professor Pankaj Kapahi and Brian Hodge published their findings. It showed that the real situation is worse than we thought.
"Our study shows that this is a big problem: eye damage may actually lead to problems in other organs,"Kapahi said. He and Hodge studied the patterns of fruit flies and found that overexposure(过度接触) to light in the eyes can cause or worsen chronic disease(慢性病). Further research found that fruit flies that were completely indarkness lived longer than those that were not.
Too much time spent in front of a screen can harm your health. "To our surprise, we found that the eye itself, at least in the fruit fly, can directly change life," Hodge said. "Looking at computer and phone screens will surely do harm to us. On top of these, being exposed to light pollution late into the night is especially bad for us Kapahi explained. "It messes up eye protection, damaging the rest of the body and the brain.
These findings are very worrying because screen time has increased fast for many kids because of COVID-19. Parents reported that although they prevented their kids from playing video games, children's screen time still increased from 0.75 hours to 6.5 hours a day due to online classes.
“We always think of the eye as something that serves us. We don't think of it as something that needs to be protected,"Kapahi reminded us.

Do you ever feel like there's not enough time in the day That time is somehow racing away from you, and it is impossible to fit everything in. But then. you step outside into the countryside and suddenly everything seems slower, more relaxed, like time has somehow changed. It's not just you-recent research showed nature can control our sense of time.
Richardo Correia, the researcher at the University of Finland, found that being in nature may change how we experience time and perhaps, even give us the sense of time abundance(充裕). Correia compared people's experiences of time when they performed different types of tasks in cities and natural environments. It showed that people reported a sense of expanded time when they were in nature compared to when they were in cities. For example, a walk through the countryside felt longer than a city walk of the same distance.
It's not just our sense of time in the moment which appears to be changed by the natural world, and it's alsoour sense of the past and future. Earlier research shows that spending time in nature helps to move our focus from44the immediate(目前的) moment towards our future needs. So rather than focusing on the stress of the demands(需求)on our time, nature helps us to see the bigger picture. This can help us focus on what's important so that we meet our long-term goals. This is partly because spending time in nature appears to make us less impulsive(冲动的),enabling us to think more about future benefits instead of wanting immediate ones.
21. How might you feel when you walk in the countryside
A. Everything remains the same. B. Time is racing away from you.
C. There are less hours in the day. D. Things seem to go at a slower speed.
22. In what way did Correia carry out the research
A. By doing online surveys. B. By interviewing experts.
C. By making comparisons. D. By reviewing earlier studies.
23. What does the underlined word “expanded” probably mean
A. Real B. Lost C. Passing D. Increased
24. How does nature help with our sense of the future
A. By meeting our needs. B. By changing our focus.
C. By showing us pictures. D. By reminding us of the past.
25. Which is the best title for the passage
A. What time brings us. B. Where time has gone
C. Why we lose sense of time in nature. D. How nature changes our sense of time.
