I do think that a book can inspire ideas and ways of thinking that have the power to transform our lives. Here are some books to serve the purpose.
Thinking, Fast and slow
Daniel Kahneman is a Nobel Prize winner who has written an amazing book that dives into the mysterious world of our conscious and unconscious thinking patterns. By reading this book, you’ll gain a deeper understanding about how to make decisions and react to certain things in your life. Yes, this is a super thick book that seems challenging, but somehow the author makes it accessible and really fun to read.
The Power of Habit
Written by award-winning New York Times business reporter Charles Duhigg, this book is an awesome mix of research, stories, and revelations(启示) about habits: how we form them, how we can change them, and how knowledge about human habits is transforming everything.
The Road Less Traveled
The first words in this classic and powerful book are: Life is difficult. Without hiding the true realities of life which is filled with conflicts, difficulties, and challenging decisions, M. Scott Peck guides us to a deeper level of self-understanding and creates a path we can follow to a fuller, more peaceful life.
The Power of Now
The key message of the book is simple and powerful: The way to true happiness is through learning to live in the now, without reliving the past or racing to the future. Eckhart Tolle helps us understand how our thoughts and emotions get in the way and what to do about it.

As I walked down the street on the first day in Dubai last year, the hot air mixed with my excitement, reminding me that I was now in a mysterious habitat. With the curiosity of wanting to try some Arabian food, I excitedly went to a local restaurant. Unexpectedly, an incident happened.
The guard standing outside the restaurant said to me, “Now it is the special festival for Muslims called Eid, during which Muslims go on fasting. Eating is banned before sunset.”“But I am only a tourist, not a Muslim. You could not restrict my liberty to have dinner,” I argued. He firmly answered, “The tradition of Islam is the same for everyone in Dubai. Once you step on the ground of Abu Dhabi, you should, and you must, obey the rule.”
Listening to his response, my disappointment turned into annoyance. As a person who knew nothing about Islam, I felt that their customs seemed quite unusual. Back to the hotel,I began to search for the information of Eid and came to know that every year there is a period of time that Muslims go on fasting until sunset. For Muslims, the fasting is to purify themselves both physically and mentally.
Glancing over the information about Eid, I felt guilty about getting annoyed with the guard. I realized that I should constantly understand and respect others’ customs and beliefs. Although sometimes the beliefs of people from various backgrounds are quite hard to accept, understanding the situation better before solving conflicts is much more effective. Only by truly accepting others’ customs could I learn from the value of their beliefs. I understood the importance of being determined to one’s belief, while at the same time learning to possess a passionate attitude towards others.
31. What did the author do on the first day in Dubai
A He enjoyed a delicious Arabian meal.
B. He made an appointment with the guard.
C. He argued with a guard outside a local restaurant.
D He stayed in the hotel because of the hot weather.

A. Clean the whole room. B. Stop eating in a period.
C. Refuse to eat in a day. D. Enjoy some entertainments.
33. How did the guard in the restaurant talk to the author
A. Enthusiastically. B. Rudely. C. Seriously. D. Impolitely.
34. Why do Muslims fast
A. Muslim fasting is to purify (净化) the body and soul.
B. No eating is allowed before sunset in Muslim countries.
C. Muslims feel guilty to eat before sunset.
D. They will be disappointed and annoyed when eating before sunset.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph about the author
A. He apologized to the guard. B. He believed in Islam after the trip.
C. He regretted arguing with the guard. D. He changed Muslim customs and beliefs.
C
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work with zoo or aquarium animals Kylene, an animal care specialist from Sea World San Diego, who cared for the African penguins at Sea World for many years.
Over the past several years, the South African penguins have been on the decrease in numbers. A hundred years ago, there were about 1 million African penguins, but since then their population has decreased to under 100,000. Scientists predict the population could fall as low as 50,000 over the next 20 years if we don’t do anything.
Some scientists think the changing ocean temperatures have caused the penguins’ food supply to disappear. Humans have also disturbed the penguins’ wild habitats and collected their eggs. And humans have also been collecting guano (the waste passed from the sea birds’ bodies), which can be added to the soil to make plants grow more successfully. As a result, humans damage their natural nest-digging sites. Without the piles of guano the penguins used to build their nests, they’ ve been forced to nest on open ground.
Some other scientists think the slight increase in air temperature on the islands has had an impact on the penguins’ success rate of hatching their eggs. No matter what the reason is, South African penguin’s population is falling, and scientists need to find a way to stop the decline.
Working with other zoos in the country, Kylene did what she could to help protect the South African penguins. Through Kylene’s efforts and the efforts of the people like her at many penguin conservation organizations in South Africa, these little penguins have a chance for a better tomorrow.
36. What has happened to the South African penguins over the past years
A. The penguin’s population has greatly declined.
B. They’ ve begun to lose the habitat completely.
C. They have done great harm to the natural environment.
D. They have been hunted by humans for money-making.
37. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The importance of penguins’ return. B. The causes of penguins’ decrease.
C. The efforts of some scientists. D. The necessity of penguins’ existence.
38. What does Kylene do
A. A zoo keeper. B. A bio-scientist.
C. An animal care specialist. D. An environmental expert.
39. What is guano used for by humans
A. The food supply. B. The building materials.
C. The good shelter. D. The farming fertilizer.
40. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of the South African penguins
A Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Uncertain.

第二部分:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
I recently returned from a language study trip to Seoul, Korea, where I had a great time but also experienced some culture shock. Luckily, I had learned about the three phases (阶段) of culture shock before. More importantly, I had learned that they would pass.
Phase one of culture shock is excitement at being in a new and different place. Nothing is boring; everything is interesting every day. I found in Seoul how interesting it is to be in a foreign country, where almost everyone looked different from me and people spoke a different language, how fun it is to have the chance to practice the language in stores and restaurants, and how great it is to order delicious Korean food for a reasonable price and pay no tip!
Then, phase two sets in. That’s when the excitement wears off, and you begin to feel the frustrations (挫折) of living in a foreign culture. I could speak to people in short phrases and sentences, comment on the weather, or get simple directions. But I couldn’t really talk. I had a hard time finding what I needed. Besides, Korean food became dull to me after a while.
I began to find ways to deal with my issues, which is the third phase of culture shock. I found things I liked, things in the foreign culture that made life pleasant. I loved the baths in Korea—so relaxing. So I went to the Dragon Hill Spa in Seoul. I became a frequent visitor to a nice coffee shop. I went to see the palace with a Secret Garden, which sounded attractive. I did not, however, go to all the palaces, temples or museums. That would have been boring for me.
The other part of Phase 3 is acceptance. I wanted to bury myself in Korean culture, but I did not love everything. I had to accept that reality. Knowing what I didn’t like, then accepting it, made me enjoy more what I did like.

A. Muslim fasting is to purify (净化) the body and soul.
B. No eating is allowed before sunset in Muslim countries.
